There are many dynamic properties in measured end-milling force. So, it is difficult to predict the real static property of end-milling force. Also the behavior of end-milling force is very complex to predict with the measured one. To extract the static property from measured force, it must be filtered and its problem is closely related to a de-noising one. Also this paper presents alternative de-noising method of end-milling force using wavelet filter bank, based on the wavelet transform and its inverse one. In this paper, by comparing the measured force and its wavelet filtered one, the fundamental end-milling force property after wavelet transform is well reviewed and analyzed. This result of wavelet filtering with filter bank shows the static force of end-milling which has severe dynamic properties occurring in entry and exit state of edge emersion into the workpiece.
Damage detection methodologies based on the direct examination of the nonlinear-nonstationary characteristics of the structure dynamic response may play an important role in online structural health monitoring applications. Different signal processing based damage detection methodologies have been proposed based on the uncovering of spikes in the high frequency component of the structural response obtained via Discrete Wavelet transforms, Hilbert-Huang transforms or high pass filtering. The performance of these approaches in systems subjected to different types of excitation is evaluated in this paper. It is found that in the case of random excitations, like earthquake accelerations, the effectiveness of such methodologies is limited. An alternative damage detection approach using the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) is also evaluated to overcome this limitation. Using the CWT has the advantage that the central frequencies at which it operates can be defined by the user while the frequency bands of the detail functions obtained via DWT are predetermined by the sampling period of the signal.
A wavelet-based procedure to generate artificial accelerograms compatible with a prescribed seismic design spectrum is described. A procedure to perform a baseline correction of the compatible accelerograms is also described. To examine how the frequency content of the modified records evolves with time, they are analyzed in the time and frequency using the wavelet transform. The changes in the strong motion duration and input energy spectrum are also investigated. An alternative way to match the design spectrum, termed the "two-band matching procedure", is proposed with the objective of preserving the non-stationary characteristics of the original record in the modified accelerogram.

A comparative study was conducted for alternative consecutive procedures of detection of cloud-contaminated pixels and gap-filling and smoothing of time-series data to produce high-quality gapless satellite vegetation index (i.e. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, NDVI). Performances of five alternative methods for detecting cloud contaminations were tested with ground-observed cloudiness data. The data gap was filled with a simple linear interpolation and then, it was applied two alternative smoothing methods (i.e. Savitzky-Golay and Wavelet transform). Moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) data were used in this study. Among the alternative cloud detection methods, a criterion of MODIS Band 3 reflectance over 10% showed best accuracy with an agreement rate of 85%, which was followed by criteria of MODIS Quality assessment (82%) and Band 3 reflectance over 20% (81%), respectively. In smoothing process, the Savitzky-Golay filter was better performed to retain original NDVI patterns than the wavelet transform. This study demonstrated an operational framework of gapdetection, filling, and smoothing to produce high-quality satellite vegetation index.
Exhaust emissions were characterized for a fleet of 10 alternative-fuel vehicles (AFVx) including 5 compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles. 3 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vehicles and 2 85% methanol/15% California Phase 2 gasoline (M85) vehicles. In addition to the standard regulated emissions and detailed speciation of organic gas compounds, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to measure ammonia (NH$_3$) and nitrous oxide ($N_2$O) emissions. NH$_3$, emissions averaged 0.124 g/mi for the vehicle fleet with a range from <0.004 to 0.540 g/mi. $N_2$O emissions averaged 0.022 g/mi over the vehicle fleet with range from <0.002 to 0.077 g/mi. Modal emissions showed that both NH$_3$, and $N_2$O emissions began during catalyst light-off and continued as the catalyst reached its operating temperature. $N_2$O emissions primarily were formed during the initial stages of catalyst light-off. Detailed speciation measurements showed that the principal component of the fuel was also the primary organic gas species found in the exhaust. In particular, methane, propane and methanol composed on average 93%, 79%, and 75% of the organic gas emissions, respectively, for the CNG, LPG. and M85 vehicles.

Increasing number and acquisition rate of satellite imagery promoted researches related with DEM generation based on satellite imagery. SPOT image gave us advantage to generate DEM which covers wide area of $60km{\times}60km$. In the case of rigorous sensor model of SPOT imagery, ephemeris data and several ground control points are need and requires arduous computational costs to produce DEM. In this study, using alternative sensor model based on Direct Linear Transform, we generated DEM using small number of ground control points. As a result, it was possible to acquire the DEM with suitable accuracy.

This paper addresses a hybrid multi-focus image fusion scheme using the recent curvelet transform constructions. Hybridization is obtained by combining the MS fusion rule with a novel "copy" method. The proposed scheme use MS rule to fuse the m most significant terms in spectrum of an image at each decomposition level. The scheme is dubbed in this work as m-term fusion in adherence to its use of the MSC (most significant coefficients) in the transform set at any given scale, orientation, and translation. We applied the edge-sensitive objective quality measure proposed by Xydeas and Petrovic to evaluate the method. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme is a potential alternative to the redundant, shift-invariant Dual-Tree Complex Wavelet transforms. In particular, it was confirmed that a 50% m-term fusion produces outputs with no visible quality degradation.

The popular methods to check the identity of individuals include passwords and ID cards. These conventional method for user identification and authentication are not altogether reliable because they can be stolen and forgotten. As an alternative of the existing methods, biometric technology has been paid much attention for the last few decades. In this paper, we propose an efficient system for recognizing the identity of a living person by analyzing iris patterns which have a high level of stability and distinctiveness than other biometric measurements. The proposed system is based on wavelet transform and a competitive neural network with the improved mechanisms. After preprocessing the iris data acquired through a CCD camera, feature vectors are extracted by using Haar wavelet transform. LVQ(Learning Vector Quantization) is exploited to classify these feature vectors. We improve the overall performance of the proposed system by optimizing the size of feature vectors and by introducing an efficient initialization of the weight vectors and a new method for determining the winner in order to increase the recognition accuracy of LVQ. From the experiments, we confirmed that the proposed system has a great potential of being applied to real applications in an efficient and effective way.
Advanced reactors, such as Small Modular Reactors or existing Nuclear Power Plants, often use Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based controllers in new Instrumentation and Control (I&C) system architectures or as an alternative to existing analog-based I&C systems. Compared to CPU-based Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), FPGAs offer better overall performance. However, programming functions on FPGAs can be challenging due to the requirement for a hardware description language that does not explicitly support the operation of real numbers. This study aims to implement the Reactor Trip (RT) functions of the existing analog-based Reactor Protection System (RPS) using FPGAs. The RT equations for Overtemperature delta Temperature and Overpower delta Temperature involve dynamic compensators expressed with the Laplace transform variable, 's', which is not directly supported by FPGAs. To address this issue, the trip equations with the Laplace variable in the continuous-time domain are transformed to the discrete-time domain using the Z-transform. Additionally, a new operation based on a relative value for the equation range is introduced for the handling of real numbers in the RT functions. The proposed approach can be utilized for upgrading the existing analog-based RPS as well as digitalizing control systems in advanced reactor systems.

Integral Imaging (II) is an attractive technique for three-dimensional (3D) image, video display and recording. Inherently, the high resolution II requires an enormous amount of data for storing and transmitting of 3D scenes. Compression techniques attempt to evade this issue. In this study, we made a comparative performance analysis of popular transforming/compression techniques such as the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) in order to compress 3D-II. The standard baseline JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) using DCT and JPEG 2000 using DWT methods were manipulated in our experiments. In our analysis, we have shown that the DWT based JPEG 2000 compression methodology could be a good alternative for 3D-II.
