  • This work is concerned with the formation behavior of PEO (Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation) films on Al6082 alloy under the application of direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) in an alkaline solution. Arc initiation voltage became much lower by the application of AC than DC, and arc initiation time became shorter under DC than AC. The number of pores present in the PEO films was much larger than that on the surface, irrespective of DC and AC. It was also found that the number of pores in the PEO films formed under AC was more than that under DC and the size of pores is smaller under AC than DC. During the formation of PEO films, a lot of heat was generated and solution temperature increased more rapidly under DC than under AC which is attributed to high PEO film formation voltage under DC than AC.

  • We fabricated AC-TFEL device having cone-shaped Si micro-tip reflector array based on the process which have been conventionally employed for the Si-tip field emitter array in FED system. As a result, the AC-TFEL device having a new geometrical structure could generate well concentrated visible white-light from 3600 reflectors/pixel under bipolar pulse excitation mode only by edge-emission mechanism.

  • The effects of alternating voltage, $Cl^-$ ion and pH on the corrosion of Zn and Zn-Fe alloys have been investigated by using electrochemical techniques in $Ca(OH)_2$ solutions. The passive film $Zn(OH)_2$ was initially formed on the Zn surface and gradually transformed to $Ca(Zn(OH)_3)_2{\cdot}2H_2O$, which was identified with the X-ray diffraction method, SEM micrograph and EPMA. The passivity current increased with increasing alternating voltage and decrease AC frequency. ${\xi}$ phase in Zn-Fe alloys reduced the effects of AC. The effect of $Cl^-$ ion on the passivity current of Zn was similar to the AC effect, resulting in pits on Zn. It was also found that the passive region of Zn decreased rapidly below pH 10.3 of the solution.

  • An experimental study was conducted using the tracking wheel test (IEC 62217) method for evaluating the performance of insulator materials, in particular ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) and silicone rubber. In addition, we studied the tracking characteristics resulting from applying the same method for the shape of the insulator housing, that is, the performance of regular and alternating sheds. The evaluation parameters were leakage current, surface characteristics, SEM, EDX, hydrophobicity, and temperature distribution; likewise, we applied the commercial frequency dry (and wet) flashover voltage test. We found that the regular shed had a greater leakage current than the alternating shed and that the recovery of the hydrophobicity in terms of rest time was greater than that of the EPDM in terms of leakage current. All of the regular-shed insulators of silicone rubber had tracking traces and choking on the sheath parting line, while the alternating shed showed only choking at the interface but no tracking traces. Therefore, it can be concluded that the commercial frequency wet flashover voltage of the silicone rubber with regular shed before and after the tracking wheel test is higher than that of the alternating shed.

  • Electrical and optical properties of the AC voltage driven organic light-emitting diodes were investigated by measuring the electroluminescence of the device. Device structure of ITO(170 nm)/TPD(40 nm)/Alq3(60 nm)/LiF(0.5 nm)/Al(100 nm) was manufactured using a thermal evaporation. Sinusoidal and square-type AC voltage was applied to the device using a function generator. Amplitude of the applied voltage was 9.0 V, and a frequency was varied from 50 Hz to 50 kHz. Electroluminescence out of the device was measured in a Si photodetector simultaneously with the applied voltage together. An intensity and a delayed residual luminescence from the device were depended on the frequency of the sinusoidal voltage. It is thought to be due to a contribution of the capacitive nature in the equivalent circuit of the device. An electron mobility was estimated using a time constant obtained from the luminescence of the device driven by the square-type AC voltage.

  • In this paper, the nature of iron loss in electrical steel during alternating field excitation is investigated more precisely. The exact definition of AC iron loss is cleared by accurately measuring the iron loss for conditions of both the sinusoidal magnetic field and sinusoidal magnetic flux density. The results of this approach to iron loss calculations in electrical steel are compared to experimentally-measured losses. In addition, an inverse hysteresis model considering eddy current loss was developed to analyze the iron loss when the input is the voltage source. With this model, the inrush current in the inductor or transformer as well as the iron loss can be calculated.

  • In order to spread LED lighting, LED lighting technology directly driven by alternating current (AC) commercial power has recently been introduced. Since current does not flow at a voltage lower than the threshold voltage of the LED, a non-conductive section occurs in the current waveform, and the higher the threshold voltage of the LED, the more discontinuous current waveforms are generated. In this paper, multi-LED modules are connected in series so that the threshold voltage can be adjusted according to the number of LED modules. A small number of LED modules are driven at a low instantaneous rectified voltage, and a large number of LED modules are driven at a high instantaneous rectified voltage to lengthen the overall lighting time of AC-LED lighting, thereby minimizing the luminance deviation of AC-LED lighting. In addition, the load current flowing through the LED module is adjusted to be the same as the design current even at the maximum rectified voltage higher than the design voltage, so that the light brightness of the LED module is kept constant. Therefore, even if the rectified voltage applied to the LED module changes, the AC-LED lighting in which the light brightness is constant and the luminance deviation is minimal has been realized.

  • Experiments were carried out on agglomeration of bipolarly charged particles in an alternating current electric field. Laboratory-scale setup was built and experiments were conducted at atmospheric condition. DOS(Di-octyl Sebacate) particles with 100% purity were generated by an atomizer. The particles were branched into two, each of which passed through a wire-to-plate type charging section where a positive or a negative DC high voltage was applied and was charged positively or negatively. These bipolarly charged particles together passed through an agglomeration section where an $\pm$20kV AC power was applied between two plates. The resident time in the agglomeration section was adjusted as l sec. Particle sampling was made by a cascade impactor (MOUDI). The effect of agglomeration system on the reduction ratio of particles below l ㎛ was 42∼45%. Effect of AC frequency on the particle size distribution was found insignificant.

  • This paper propose the high power factor and efficiency buck-boost AC-DC converter because the input current is made sinusoidal wave in single phase alternating current source. The proposed converter is able to minimize switching loss by the partial resonant switching which is for switching devices to operate the zero voltage switching (ZVS) or zero current switching(ZCS) without increasing their voltage and current stresses.
