  • We describe the calculation of thermal expansion coefficients of $\alpha$-quartz, muscovite and albite using a MD simulation method. The selection of interatomic potentials is important for the MD calculation, and we used the 2-body interatomic potential function. The coefficients are calculated using a differential operation of the temperature dependence of the lattice constant obtained from the NPT-ensemble molecular dynamics simulation. Reasonable agreement is found between the analytical results and measured data.

  • Barnyardgrass had relatively higher growth vigor at the earlier growth stage than inbred rice did, showing the 2 fold higher $\alpha$-amylase activity during the periods of germination and large leaf area Expansion with high net photosynthetic rate at the earlier autotrophic stage, but it performed weak growth at the late growth stage. However, the hlybrid rice Shanyou 63 had significantly higher $\alpha$-amylase activity and net photosynthetic rate than that of barnyardgrass, exhibiting heterosis for two physiologica1 traits during the germination (6~12 days) and autotrophic phase, respectively. Accordingly, hybrid rice, Shanyou 63, exhibited heterotic effect at the early growing stage when were presented with barnyardgrass. Shanyou 63 exhibited stronger tillering ability, faster leaf area expansion and higher net photosynthetic rate than those of barnyardgrass.

  • A specific inhibitor of RNA polymerase II, ${\alpha}$-amanitin is broadly used to block transcriptional activities in cells. Previous studies showed that ${\alpha}$-amanitin affects in vitro maturation of cumulus-oocyte-complex (COC). In this study, we evaluated the target of ${\alpha}$-amanitin, and whether it affects oocytes or cumulus cells (CCs), or both. We treated ${\alpha}$-amanitin with different time period during in vitro culture of denuded oocytes (DOs) or COCs in comparison, and observed the changes in morphology and maturation status. Although DOs did not show any change in morphology and maturation rates with ${\alpha}$-amanitin treatment, oocytes from COCs were arrested at metaphase I (MI) stage and CCs were more scattered than control groups. To discover causes of meiotic arrest and scattering of CCs, we focused on changes of cumulus expansion, gap junctions, and cellular metabolism which to be the important factors for the successful in vitro maturation of COCs. Expression of genes for cumulus expansion markers (Ptx3, Has2, and Tnfaip6) and gap junctional proteins (Gja1, Gja4, and Gjc1) decreased in ${\alpha}$-amanitin-treated CCs. However, these changes were not observed in oocytes. In addition, expression of genes related to metabolism (Prps1, Rpe, Rpia, Taldo1, and Tkt) decreased in ${\alpha}$-amanitin-treated CCs but not in oocytes. Therefore, we concluded that the transcriptional activities of CCs for supporting suitable transcripts, especially for its metabolic activities and formation of gap junctions among CCs as well as with oocytes, are important for oocytes maturation in COCs.

  • The air gap between the metal and mold, formed by shrinkage during solidification, causes surface and subsurface cracks in the continuous casting process. Molten crack on the surface might also occur due to improper heat transfer between them. In order to compensate the air gap in mold design, the thermal contraction is an essential factor. In this study, the thermal contraction and expansion behaviors were examined from the ($\alpha$ and pearlite)/${\gamma}$ to ${\gamma}$/$\delta$ transformations in continuous casting steels by the commercial dilatometer and the self- assembled dilatometer with laser distance measurement. It was found that the thermal contraction and expansion behaviors were very dependant on the phase transformation of the ${\gamma}$/$\delta$ as well as ($\alpha$ and pearlite)/${\gamma}$. The sudden volume change from $\delta$ to ${\gamma}$ which might cause cracks in the continuous casting process, was observed on cooling just below the melting temperature by the self-assembled dilatometer.

  • This study is intended to identify how quick disconnect coupling which connects with refrigerant piping of air-conditioner using R-22 refrigerant has effect on characteristics of flux. in the case where the air-conditioner installs utilizes quick disconnect coupling, COP has an effect on the quantity of cooling load because of changing flow rate and physical properties of refrigerant which flow into an entrance of expansion valve from coupling. Variation of flow rate can be regulated by changing expansion-contraction angle; $\alpha$ of an entrance and an exit of coupling. In this study, quick disconnect coupling is presented flow of coupling by using FLUENT as heat flow program. To have an effect on the expansion entrance valve, and by changing expansion-contraction angle; $\alpha$ of an entrance and an exit

  • Cavity expansion and contraction solutions for cylindrical and spherical cavities in unsaturated residual soils are presented in this paper. Varying soil state in the plastic zone is accounted by a numerical approach, wherein an element-by-element discretization of the plastic zone of both expanding and contracting cavities is carried out. Unlike existing methods utilizing self-similarity technique, the solution procedure enables the prediction of entire soil-state at any stage of expansion and subsequent contraction. It is also applicable for both cavity creation and expansion problems. The approach adopts constant contribution of suction to effective stress (constant Xs drainage condition) for analysis. The analysis procedure is validated by interpreting the previously reported pressuremeter test results in lateritic residual soil. The typical cavity expansion and contraction characteristics of unsaturated Indian lateritic soil were then examined using this solution procedure. The effect of initial soil-state on cavity limit pressure, plastic radius, reverse yield pressure, and reverse plastic radius are also presented.

  • This study was performed to investigate the stimulating effect on oocyte maturation and cumulus cell expansion in TC199 media by human cord serum (HCS) supplementation. Immature mouse oocyte cumulus complexes (OCCs) were cultured in TC199 media supplemented with bovine serum albumin (BSA), HCS and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) instead of luteinizing hormone (LH) respectively, and the expression of cumulus expansion and oocyte maturation were observed. After 4hr and 24hr culture with or without OCCs, media containing 0.4% BSA, 10% HCS and 10 IV hCG respectively were collected and analyzed for changing concentrations of estradiol $(E_2)$, progesterone $(P_4)$, testosterone (T), and $PGF_{2\alpha}$. There were no elevation of $E_2$, T, and $PGF_{2\alpha}$ by OCCs culture, but minute elevation of $P_4$ level by 24hr OCCs culture in hCG supplementation (p=0.048). The stimulating pattern of cumulus expansion of OCCs by HCS and hCG supplementation was similar to our previously report using Ham's F-10 media, however oocyte maturation rates after 24hr OCCs culture in all media were increased by $20\sim30%$ compared to Ham's F-10 media. These results suggest that LH in HCS induce cumulus expansion probably by $P_4$ secretion of OCCs, and TC199 is efficient media for immature mouse oocyte maturation.

  • Casting of metal matrix composites is an attractive process since it offers a wide selection of materials and processing conditions. Among the casting methods, melt-stirring technology is much attractive route in industrial application because it is more simple and inexpensive compared to squeeze casting or powder metallurgy. In the present work, effects of particle size, volume fraction of particles and mg addition on mechanical properties and thermal expansion coefficients of $\alpha$ -$Al_2O_{3(p)}$/LXA composites were studied. It is shown that $\alpha$ -$Al_2O_3$ particles formed at the interface of $\alpha$ -$Al_2O_3$ particles and matrix made an important role on mechanical properties. Ultimate tensile strength of most composite materials was not increased. But in the case of 5vol% addition of 16$\mu\textrm{m}$ $\alpha$ -$Al_2O_3$ Particle, Ultimate tensile strength of composite materials with 3wt.% Mg was increased. Volume fraction of reinforcements and mg content were thermal expansion coefficients of composite materials were decreased.

  • It is well known that the continued fraction expansion of ${\sqrt{d}}$ has the form $[{\alpha}_0,\;{\bar{{\alpha}_1,\;{\ldots},\;{\alpha}_{l-1},\;2_{{\alpha}_0}}]$ and ${\alpha}_1,\;{\ldots},\;{\alpha}_{l-1}$ is a palindromic sequence of positive integers. For a given positive integer l and a palindromic sequence of positive integers ${\alpha}_1,\;{\ldots},\;{\alpha}_{l-1},$ we define the set $S(l;{\alpha}_1,\;{\ldots},\;{\alpha}_{l-1})\;:=\;\{d{\in}{\mathbb{Z}}{\mid}d>0,\;{\sqrt{d}}=[{\alpha}_0,\;{\bar{{\alpha}_1,\;{\ldots},\;{\alpha}_{l-1},\;2_{{\alpha}_0}}],\;where\;{\alpha}_0={\lfloor}{\sqrt{d}}{\rfloor}\}.$ In this paper, we completely determine when $S(l;{\alpha}_1,\;{\ldots},\;{\alpha}_{l-1})$ is not empty in the case that l is 4, 5, 6, or 7. We also give similar results for $(1+{\sqrt{d}})/2.$ For the case that l is 4, 5, or 6, we explicitly describe the fundamental units of the real quadratic field ${\mathbb{Q}}({\sqrt{d}}).$ Finally, we apply our results to the Mordell conjecture for the fundamental units of ${\mathbb{Q}}({\sqrt{d}}).$

  • Considering the effective distribution coefficient of Ni in Fe-Ni-Co invar alloy containing a little amount of carbon, we investigated on the thermal expansion coefficient(${\alpha}$). Fe-Ni-Co invar alloy had a large thermal expansion coefficient in as-casted compared with solution treated. The thermal expansion coefficient of Fe-Ni-Co alloy increased with the carbon content in both state of as-casted and solution treated. The effective distribution coefficient(Ke$\^$Ni/) of Ni was smaller than unity in alloy of not containing carbon, but is way larger than unity in alloy of containing carbon. It was considered that the homogeneity of Ni in primary austenite affected thermal expansion coefficient.
