  • Fractures at the lateral end of the clavicle inevitably require surgical treatment as there is high potential for delayed union or nonunion. Acromioclavicular dislocation also requires stable and solid fixation for healing, and surgical treatment is recommended for the maintenance of joint function. The hook plate maintains the biomechanics of the acromioclavicular joint, enabling early range of motion. Therefore, for the past 10 years, the hook plate has been widely used in distal clavicle fractures and acromioclavicular joint injuries. However, the hook plate is associated with several complications, such as proximal clavicle fractures, widening of the hook hole, rotator cuff tear, subacromial impingement, and often acromial fractures. We report on two unusual cases of acromion fracture after hook plate fixation in patients with distal clavicle fracture and acromioclavicular dislocation alongside a literature review.

  • The paper concerns analysis of effects of shrinkage of slab concrete in a steel-concrete composite deck of a through truss bridge span. Attention is paid to the shrinkage alongside the span, i.e., transverse to steel-concrete composite cross-beams. So far this aspect has not been given much attention in spite of the fact that it affects not only steel-concrete decks of bridges but also steel-concrete floors of steel frame building structures. For the problem analysis a two-dimensional model is created. An analytical method is presented in detail. A set of linear equations is built to compute axial forces in members of truss girder flange and transverse shear forces in steel-concrete composite beams. Finally a case study is shown: test loading of twin railway truss bridge spans is described, verified FEM model of the spans is presented and computational results of FEM and the analytical method are compared. Conclusions concerning applicability of the presented analytical method to practical design are drawn. The presented analytical method provides satisfactory accuracy of results in comparison with the verified FEM model.

  • In order to maximize the effect of installing screen door system while to minimize the problems in an initial stage of introduction, it is strongly required to research an optimum installation solution in connection with ventilation and disaster prevention system alongside with safety structure analysis of screen door in respect to train-induced wind, as well as to develop the criteria for the operation after the installation. This paper presents the results of study to develop the optimum design technology in urban railway equipped with platform screen door systems.

  • A new approach was applied to examine the charge generation and transport in organic photoconductive devices by Monte‐Carlo simulation utilizing multiple site interactions of carriers with all other charges within Coulomb radius. Stepwise generation frame was considered first by a charge separation process that was counted in two separate transactions, i.e., hopping against physical decay and dissociation against recombination. Thereafter, diffusion/ drifting process of free carriers was counted to follow. This method enables to examine readily the photocurrent generated alongside the charge generation efficiency. The field and temperature dependences of the efficiency and photocurrent were obtained comparable to Onsager’s and experimental data.

  • The paper presents the cost optimization of composite floor trusses composed from a reinforced concrete slab of constant depth and steel trusses consisting of hot rolled channel sections. The optimization was performed by the nonlinear programming approach, NLP. Accordingly, a NLP optimization model for composite floor trusses was developed. An accurate objective function of the manufacturing material, power and labour costs was proposed to be defined for the optimization. Alongside the costs, the objective function also considers the fabrication times, and the electrical power and material consumption. Composite trusses were optimized according to Eurocode 4 for the conditions of both the ultimate and the serviceability limit states. A numerical example of the optimization of the composite truss system presented at the end of the paper demonstrates the applicability of the proposed approach.

  • This work incorporates newly introduced Lattice Discrete Particle Model (LDPM) to assess the failure mechanism and strength of hollow concrete blocks. Alongside, a method for the graphical representation of cracked surfaces in the LDPM is outlined. A slightly modified calibration procedure is also suggested and used to estimate required model parameters for a tested concrete sample. Next, the model is verified for a compressively loaded hollow block made of the very same concrete. Finally, four geometries commonly used in the production of hollow concrete blocks are selected, numerically simulated, and their failure properties are explored under concentric and eccentric compressions.

  • A lab-scale fluidized bed heat exchanger for waste gas heat recovery is devised and tested. Compared to our previous works on fluidized bed type system with a single riser, the present heat exchanger system is featured by its multiple (four) risers to handle increased amount of exhaust gas. Particles are introduced to the main hot gas stream alongside the pipe circumference near riser inlets. The heat exchanger performance and pressure drop are evaluated through experiments for the present gas-to-water heat exchanger system.

  • A new fluidized bed heat exchanger for exhaust gas heat recovery is do-veloped. Compared to the existing ones, the present heat exchanger system is featured by the particle fluidization method which does not depend on conventionally used baffle plate with holes and by the multiple downcomer tubes to extract heat energy from hot particles during the time particles moves down to be fed again to the hot gas line. Particles are introduced to the main hot gas stream alongside the pipe circumference. The heat exchanger performance and pressure drop are evaluated through experiments for the present gas-to-water heat exchanger system.
