  • Effects of alloying elements on the mechanical properties of hardened and austempered 3.60wt%C - 2.50wt%C ductile cast iron were investigated. Strength and hardness were increased and ductility was decreased as the amount of alloying element increased. The increasing effect of copper addition on the strength was the most pronounced. The strength and hardness were greatly increased and ductility was decreased by hardening. The effect of alloying element on the mechanical properties of the hardened ductile cast iron was not so pronounced due to the high contents of C and Si. The strength and hardness of austempered ductile cast iron were greatly increased, meanwhile the difference of strength from that of hardened one was not so big. The ductility of the former was higher than that of the latter. The strength and ductility of austempered ductile cast iron with 0.25%Mn were the maximum of all Mn added ones. The maximum strength of that was obtained with the addition of 0.80wt%Cu or 2.00wt%Ni along with this amount of Mn added.

  • Ferritic stainless steel is currently increasingly used for automotive exhaust material. The material for exhaust manifold is used in the temperature range of 500∼$850^{\circ}C$. Therefore, high temperature characteristic is an important one that affects it's life span. It has been investigated the effect of alloying elements of Cr, Mo, Nb, Ti in the ferritic stainless steel for exhaust manifold on the high temperature tensile strength. There was a few difference in the tensile strength at $600^{\circ}C$ with the exception of low Cr steel, but the steels containing higher Cr, Mo or Nb elements showed significantly higher tensile strength at the temperature of $800^{\circ}C$. The precipitates of the specimens after heat treating at the test temperature were electrolytic extracted, and quantitatively analysed using by SEM-EDS and TEM. The alloying elements of Cr and Mo increased the tensile strength as a solid solution strengthener, and on the other hand Nb element enhanced the strength by forming the fine intermetallic compounds such as NbC or $Fe_2Nb$.

  • The steel for automotive exhaust system needs a good corrosion resistance at the atmosphere of high temperature NaCl. Effect of the alloying elements Me, Ti, Nb on the NaCl induced hot corrosion behavior was investigated at the temperatures between 55$0^{\circ}C$ and 75$0^{\circ}C$ for 18Cr ferritic stainless steels. The weight loss by corrosion has increased linearly with corrosion cycle time, and the corrosion rate has accelerated at higher temperature. The alloying of Mo significantly improved corrosion resistance of the steel and the effect was more pronounced at higher temperature. The addition of alloying elements Ti, Nb have also shown improved corrosion resistance by formation of Ti(C,N) or Nb(C, N) precipitates.

Effect of Final Annealing and Stress on Creep Behavior of HANA Zirconium Fuel Claddings (HANA 지르코늄 핵연료피복관의 크립거동에 미치는 최종 열처리 및 응력의 영향)

  • Thermal creep properties of the advanced zirconium fuel claddings named by HANA alloys which were developed for high burn-up application were evaluated. The creep test of HANA cladding tubes was carried out by the internal pressurization method in temperature range from 350 to $400^{\circ}C$ and in the hoop stress range from 100 to 150 MPa. Creep tests were lasted up to 800 days, which showed the steady-state secondary creep rate. The creep resistance of HANA fuel claddings was affected by final annealing temperature and various factors, such as alloying element, applied stress and testing temperature. From the results the microstructure observation of the samples before and after creep test by using TEM, the dislocation density was increased in the sample of after creep test. The Sn as an alloying element was more effective in the creep resistance than other elements such as Nb, Fe, Cr and Cu due to solute hardening effect of Sn. In case of HANA fuel claddings, the improved creep resistance was obtained by the control of final heat treatment temperature as well as alloying element.

  • In this study, various alloying elements (Cr, Sr, Ca, Cd) were added to improve the mechanical properties of ADC12 fabricated by a die casting process. The effect of alloying elements on the microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. The phase analysis results of the modified ADC12 alloy with conventional ADC12 alloy, showed the similar characteristics of Al matrix, Si phase, $CuAl_2$ phase and the Fe intermetallic phase. As a result of the microstructure observation, the secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) was shown to have decreased after the addition of the alloying elements. The eutectic Si phase, which existed as flake form in the conventional ADC12 alloy, was modified finely as a fiber form in the modified ADC12 alloy. It was observed that the $CuAl_2$ phase as the strengthening phase was relatively finely distributed in the modified ADC12 alloy. The Fe intermetallic appeared as a Chinese script shaped $Al_6$ (Mn,Fe) which is detrimental to mechanical properties in conventional ADC12 alloy. On the other hand, in the modified ADC12 alloy, polyhedral ${\alpha}-Al_{15}Si_2$ $(Fe,Mn,Cr)_3$ was observed. The tensile properties were improved in the modified ADC12 alloy. The yield strength and tensile strength increased by 12.4% and 10.0%, respectively, in the modified ADC12 alloy, and the elongation was also seen to have been increased. As a result of the pin on disk wear test, the wear resistance properties were also improved by up to about 7% in the modified ADC12 alloy. It is noted that the wear deformation microstructures were also observed, and it was found that the fine eutectic Si and strengthening phases greatly improved abrasion resistance.

The creep test of cladding tubes after various final heat treatment was carried out by the internal pressurization method in the temperature range from $350^{\circ}C to 400^{\circ}C$ and from 100 to 150 MPa in the hoop stress. Creep tests were lasted up to 900days, which showed the steady-state secondary creep rate. The creep resistance of zirconium claddings was higher than that of Zircaloy-4. Factors that affect creep resistance, such as final annealing temperature, applied stress and alloying element were discussed. Tin as an alloying element was more effective than niobium due to solute hardening effect of tin. In case of advanced claddings, the optimization of final heat treatment temperature as well as alloying element causes a great influence on the improvement of creep resistance.

  • The glass formation behavior was investigated in the melt spun Zr-Ti-Cu-Ni-X (X=B, P and Si) ribbons. The magnitude of supercooled liquid region of Zr-Ti-Cu-Ni alloy increased with an addition of alloying element. The glass transition temperature and the crystallization temperature increased and the magnitude of supercooled liquid region decreased with increasing the content of alloying elements. The largest supercooled liquid region was observed in the Si containing alloy. This is believed to be due to the dense atom packing with the optimum atomic size ratio of constituent elements.

  • 440A martensitic stainless steels which were modified with reduced carbon content(~0.5wt.%) and addition of small amount of vanadium, tungsten and molybdenum 0.4wt.%, 0.4wt.% and 0.68wt.% respectively were manufactured. Effects of alloying elements and tempering temperatures on the intergranular corrosion were investigated through the method of DL-EPR(Double-electrochemical potentiodynamic reactivation). It was thought that the highest DOS(Degree of sensitization) of specimens was obtained at the tempering temperature of $450^{\circ}C$ regardless of types of alloy because of the precipitation of Cr7C3. Addition of vanadium lowered DOS a little above the tempering temperature of $550^{\circ}C$. It was considered to be effected by precipitation of VC carbides. Intergranular corrosion was influenced more by tempering temperature than by alloying elements of V, W and Mo.

  • Low-carbon steels and a stainless steel were oxidized isothermally and cyclically between $1050^{\circ}C$ and $1200^{\circ}C$ for up to 100 min in air to find the effect of alloying elements of Si, Mn, Ni, and Cr on their oxidation. The most active alloying element of Si was scattered inside the oxide scale, at the scale-alloy interface and as internal oxide precipitates beneath the oxide scale. Manganese, which could not effectively improve the oxidation resistance, was rather uniformly distributed in the oxide scale. Nickel and chromium tended to present at the lower part of the oxide scale. Excessively thick porous scales formed on the low-carbon steels, whereas thin but non-adherent scales containing $Cr_2O_3$ formed on the stainless steel.
