As structural materials, magnesium (Mg) alloys have been widely used in the fields of aviation, automobiles, optical instruments, and electronic products. There are few studies on the effect of coating conditions on the compositional variation during the formation process of the conversion coatings. Rare-earth based conversion coating on AZ91 magnesium alloy was prepared in ceric sulfate and hydrogen peroxide contained solution. The element composition and valence as well as their distribution in the coating were analyzed with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The effect of treating process on the element composition were also studied. It was found that the conversion coating surface consists of Mg, Al, O, Ce, and the weight content of Ce in the coating was affected by the treating solution concentration and immersion time; the Ce element was distributed in the coating non-uniformly and existed in the form of $Ce^{+3}$ and $Ce^{+4}$, while the O element existed in the form of $OH^-$, $O^{2-}$, $H_2O$. Based on microscopic analysis results, the electrochemical deposition mechanism on the micro-anode and micro-cathode in the process of the coating growth was suggested.
This paper considers the combination of cyclic and axial loads to investigate the hysteretic performance of H-section 6061-T6 aluminum alloy members. The hysteretic performance of aluminum alloy members is the basis for the seismic performance of aluminum alloy structures. Despite the prevalence of aluminum alloy reticulated shells structures worldwide, research into the seismic performance of aluminum alloy structures remains inadequate. To address this deficiency, we design and conduct cyclic axial load testing of three H-section members based on a reliable testing system. The influence of slenderness ratios and bending direction on the failure form, bearing capacity, and stiffness degradation of each member are analyzed. The experiment results show that overall buckling dominates the failure mechanism of all test members before local buckling occurs. As the load increases after overall buckling, the plasticity of the member develops, finally leading to local buckling and fracture failure. The results illustrate that the plasticity development of the local buckling position is the main reason for the stiffness degradation and failure of the member. Additionally, with the increase of the slenderness ratio, the energy-dissipation capacity and stiffness of the member decrease significantly. Simultaneously, a finite element model based on the Chaboche hybrid strengthening model is established according to the experiment, and the rationality of the constitutive model and validity of the finite element simulation method are verified. The parameter analysis of twenty-four members with different sections, slenderness ratios, bending directions, and boundary conditions are also carried out. Results show that the section size and boundary condition of the member have a significant influence on stiffness degradation and energy dissipation capacity. Based on the above, the appropriate material constitutive relationship and analysis method of H-section aluminum alloy members under cyclic loading are determined, providing a reference for the seismic design of aluminum alloy structures.
The inhomogeneous texture through the thickness direction can be developed during hot rolling deformation in aluminum alloy. In this study, the inhomogeneous texture evolution through the thickness direction during hot rolling deformation in Al-5 wt%Mg alloy produced by a new strip casting technology was measured experimentally. Macrotexture measurement was conducted using X-ray diffractometer. A finite element analysis with ABAQUS/StandardTM and rate sensitive polycrystal model were used to predict the evolution of hot rolling texture. The experimental results of Al-5 wt%Mg alloy were compared with calculated results. The shear texture components tend to be increased at the surface region of the hot-rolled specimen. It is found that triclinic sample symmetry is more accurate assumption for texture analysis and simulation in the surface region of hot-rolled aluminum alloy.
Densification behavior of composite powders was investigated during cold compaction. Experimental data were obtained for aluminum alloy powder mixed with zirconia powder inclusion under triaxial compression. The Cap model with constraint factors was implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) to simulate compaction responses of composite powders during cold compaction. Finite element results were compared with experimental data for densification behavior of composite powders under cold isostatic pressing and die compaction. The agreements between experimental data and finite element calculations from the Cap model with constraint factors were good.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the applicability of the element stress to establish S-N design curve for the welded lap joint with thin plates below 2mm thickness. In order to do it, the extensive fatigue tests of the welded lap joints with INVAR alloy were performed. With the results, the deign S-N curves for the lap-weld were established by using the reference stresses such as the nominal stress range at the weld throat area, hot spot stress range and element stress range, and compared with regard to the standard deviation. The standard deviation of S-N curves with element stress range was less than that of S-N curves with other reference stresses. In addition, FEA results show the amount of the element stress is less sensitive to mesh size. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the element stress is to be used as the reference stress for the design S-N curves of the welded lap joint.
Due to their low densities and high specific strength and stiffness, magnesium alloy sheets are very attractive lightweight materials for automotive and electrical products. However, the magnesium alloy sheets are usually formed at elevated temperature because of their poor formability at room temperature. To use of the magnesium alloy sheets for an industrial, their mechanical properties at elevated temperature and appropriate forming process conditions have to be developed. In this study, non-isothermal simulations of a square cup drawing from magnesium alloy sheets have been conducted to evaluate a proper forming process conditions such as the tool temperature, the tool shoulder radius, friction between the blank and the tools. According to this study, appropriate forming process conditions of square cup drawing at elevated temperature from magnesium alloy sheets are suggested.

The microstructure evolution of Alloy 718 during the direct age(DA) process was predicted using the recrystallization model and finite element analysis. The DA process of Alloy 718 was performed in two-step forging using capsulated cylindrical billets of 122mm in diameter and 180mm in height. In order to evaluate the microstructural change during the forging, a dynamic recrystallization model of Alloy 718 was implemented onto the user-subroutine of the commercial FEM code. The prediction of microstructure evolution in DA processed Alloy 718 pancake was compared with experimental results.
To alloy high melting point elements such as boron, ruthenium, and iridium with copper, heat treatment was performed using metal oxides of $B_2O_3$, $RuO_2$, and $IrO_2$ at the temperature of $1200^{\circ}C$ in vacuum for 30 minutes. The microstructure analysis of the alloyed sample was confirmed using an optical microscope and FE-SEM. Hardness and trace element analyses were performed using Vickers hardness and WD-XRF, respectively. Diffusion profile analysis was performed using D-SIMS. From the microstructure analysis results, crystal grains were found to have formed with sizes of 2.97 mm. For the copper alloys formed using metal oxides of $B_2O_3$, $RuO_2$, and $IrO_2$ the sizes of the crystal grains were 1.24, 1.77, and 2.23 mm, respectively, while these sizes were smaller than pure copper. From the Vickers hardness results, the hardness of the Ir-copper alloy was found to have increased by a maximum of 2.2 times compared to pure copper. From the trace element analysis, the copper alloy was fabricated with the expected composition. From the diffusion profile analysis results, it can be seen that 0.059 wt%, 0.030 wt%, and 0.114 wt% of B, Ru, and Ir, respectively, were alloyed in the copper, and it led to change the hardness. Therefore, we verified that alloying of high melting point elements is possible at the low temperature of $1200^{\circ}C$.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the high temperature deformation behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloy and to predict the final microstructure under given forming conditions. Equiaxed and widmanstatten of Ti-6Al-4V alloys were prepared as initial microstructure and the compression tests were performed to obtain the flow curves at high temperatures (700∼1100$^{\circ}C$) and various strain rates (10$\^$-4/∼10$^2$/s). Form the results of compression test various parameters such as strain rate sensitivity (m) and activation energy (Q) were calculated and used to establish constitutive equations. To predict the final microstructure after forming, finite element analysis was performed considering the microstructural parameters such as the grain size and the volume fraction of second phase.
