  • This study is concerned with the optimization of steel jacket subjected to wave forces using the allowable stress design method. The optimization of member section is considered here. Objective function for the minmum cost design is obtained by considering the weight of steel jecket. Constraints are imposed to insure that structural displacement and strength are within allowable values. The nonliner otimization problems are solved by SUMT method including the modified Newton-Raphson method.

  • Dynamic response of a hull mounted sonar(HMS) to shocks transmitted through hull structures is analyzed and then the structural reliability of the sonars is evaluated. Finite element model of the hull mounted sonar is established and the transient responses to the shock is calculated using MSC.NASTRAN. According to BV043, the maximum allowable accelerations at the foundation of the sonar are converted from the shock spectra allowable for HMS. They are applied vertically and horizontally, respectively, using the large mass method. The structural reliability is evaluated by comparing the von-Mises stresses with the material yield stress. The drum for sensors shows a high reliability owing to mounts by which the shock waves from the base structure are well protected. However, the mounts between the base structure and the drum to mount sensors show a high stress intensity. The base structure also reveals a high stress intensity at the connection points to the hull.

  • There are two methods commonly used in design of splice plate connection of frame structure. The one is Design by Actual Stress which can sufficiently transfer actual force to an adjacent member using rows of bolts. The other is Design by Member Strength which is able to transfer total allowable stress of effective section area to a connected member. In real design, as a matter of convenience, Standard Connection Drawings have used according to Design by Member Strength. But this method underestimate connection force in shear connection where large connection moment occured. In this study, these Design methods are compared by connection moment in shear connections. and the adequate use of them are recommended. Also In order to evaluate more accurately the actual stress of splice plate of flange on moment. connection, a new calculation method of it is recommended.

  • Multi-disciplinary optimization design concept can provide a solution to many engineering problems. In the field of structural analysis, much development of size or topology optimization has been achieved in the application of research. This paper demonstrates an optimum design of a multi-layer cylindrical tube which behaves thermoelastically. A multi-layer cylindrical tube that has several different material properties at each layer is optimized within allowable stress and temperature range when mechanical and thermal loads are applied simultaneously. When thermal loads are applied to a multi-layer tube, stress phenomena become complicated due to each layer's thermal expansion and the layer thicknesses. Factors like temperature; stress; and material thermal thicknesses of each tube layer are very difficult undertaking. To analyze these problems using an efficient and precise method, the optimization theories are adopted to perform thermoelastic finite element analysis.

  • Design optimization of layered plates bonding process is conducted by considering uncertainties in a manufacturing process, in order to reduce the crack failure arising due to the residual stress at the surface of the adherent which is caused by different thermal expansion coefficients. Robust optimization is peformed to minimize the mean as well as its variance of the residual stress, while constraining the distortion as well as the instantaneous maximum stress under the allowable reliability limits. In this optimization, the dimension reduction (DR) method is employed to quantify the reliability such as mean and variance of the layered plate bonding. It is expected that the DR method benefits the optimization from the perspectives of efficiency, accuracy, and simplicity. The obtained robust optimal solution is verified by the Monte Carlo simulation.

  • Design optimization of layered plates bonding process is conducted to achieve high product quality by considering uncertainties in a manufacturing process. During the cooling process of the sequential sub-processes, different thermal expansion coefficients lead to residual stress and displacement. thus resulting in defects on the surface of the adherent. So robust process optimization is performed to minimize the residual stress mean and variation of the assembly while constraining the distortion as well as the instantaneous maximum stress to the allowable limits. In robust process optimization, the dimension reduction (DR) method is employed to quantify both reliability and quality of the layered plate bonding. Using this method. the average and standard deviation is estimated. Response surface is constructed using the statistical data obtained by the DRM for robust objectives and constraints. from which the optimum solution is obtained.

  • The excessive settlement and deformation of disintegrated carbonaceous mudstone (DCM) embankments under dynamic loading have long been problems for engineers and technicians. In this work, the characteristics and mechanism of the plastic deformation of DCM under different degrees of compaction, water contents and confining pressures were studied by static triaxial, dynamic triaxial and scanning electron microscopy testing. The research results show that the axial stress increases with increasing confining pressure and degree of compaction and decreases with increasing water content when DCM failure. The axial strain at failure of the DCM decreases with increasing confining pressure and degree of compaction and increases with increasing water content. Under cyclic dynamic stress, the change in the axial stress level of the DCM can be divided into four stages: the stable stage, transition stage, safety reserve stage and unstable stage, respectively. The effects of compaction, water content and confining pressure on the critical axial stress level which means shakedown of the DCM are similar. However, an increase in confining pressure reduces the effects of compaction and water content on the critical axial stress level. The main deformation of DCM is fatigue cracking. Based on the allowable critical axial stress, a method for embankment deformation control was proposed. This method can determine the degree of compaction and fill range of the embankment fill material according to the equilibrium moisture content of the DCM embankment.

  • For fatigue analsis of offshore structures, existing methods have been reviewed and a computer code has been developed on PC. As methods to estimate the probabillity distribution of the fatigue stress, three methods(the deterministic method, the stochastic method, and the simplified method) are used in this code, to choose the appropriate method according to the situations. This code estimates damage ratios, fatigue lives, and probabilities of fatigue failure considering scatterness of SN-data, based on linear damage rule and SN-curves. Also, allowable stress for the design extreme wave can calculated by the simplified method.

  • Evaluation of the structural analysis for a 70/15 ton${\times}$105 m LLC (Level Luffing Crane) was conducted with an FEM Tool. Due to a discordance of the modeling and element type, the LLC was progressively analyzed after dividing it into the boom, main structure and rocker. All loads such as slewing, traveling and wind load, etc., that are indicated in the reference standards, were inputted as various severe conditions of the LLC. The deformation, equivalent stress(Von Mises stress), buckling characteristics were evaluated for the LLC structures. The stress concentrated areas over the allowable stress were identified, and reinforcement work was performed with a stiffener.

  • In this study, a process design method for the multi-pass shape drawing is proposed with consideration of the drawing stress. First, the shape drawing load was calculated to evaluate the shape drawing stress, and the intermediate die shape was determined by using an electric field analysis and the average reduction ratio. In order to evaluate whether material yielding occurs at the die exit, the drawing stress was determined by using the calculated shape drawing load. Finally, FE-analysis and shape drawing experiments were conducted to validate the design of the multi-pass shape drawing process. From the results of the FE-analysis and shape drawing experiments, it was possible to produce a sound shape drawn product with the designed process. The dimensional tolerances of the product were within the allowable tolerances.
