Determination of Formaldehyde in Cigarette Smoke and Inhibitory Effect of Plant Volatile Extracts on the Formation of Formaldehyde

  • Formaldehyde (FA) is a carcinogenic compound present in cigarette smoke. In this study, the amount of formaldehyde was analyzed in 5 kinds of cigarettes and the inhibitory effect of plant volatile extracts on the formation of FA was investigated. After extraction of the cigarette sample, FA was converted into its thiazolidine derivatives by reaction with cysteamine, and then measured using a gas chromatography-nitrogen phosphorus detector (GC-NPD). The concentrations of FA in cigarette smoke were found between 138.24 and $217.82{\mu}mol/g$ cigarette smoke. Extracts isolated from Welsh onion (Allium cepa L.), garlic (Allium sativum L.), crown daisy (Chrylsanthemum coronarium L.), green pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), and sesame dropwort (Oenanthe javanica DC) were used for analyzing their inhibitory effects on the formation of FA. The inhibitory effects of extracts of Welsh onion, garlic, crown daisy, green pepper, and sesame dropwort on the formation of FA were 64, 47, 38, 47, and 19%, respectively.

고지방식이를 섭취한 마우스에서 양파껍질 열수 추출물이 혈중지질에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Onion Peel Water Extract on the Blood Lipid Profiles in Mice Fed a High-Fat Diet)

  • Onion (Allium cepa L.) is one of the richest sources of flavonoids in human diet. Onion peel contains over 20 times more quercetin than onion flesh. In this study, we studied the effects of onion peel water extract (OPE) on the blood lipid profiles in mice. The onion peel extracts was extracted with hot water. The experimental groups were divided with 3 groups (n = 6) of ICR male mice: normal diet + distilled water (NC), high-fat diet + distilled water (HF), high-fat diet + onion peel water extract 20 mg/kg (OPE-20). The oral administration was conducted daily. The experimental period was 7 weeks. Onion peel water extract showed higher concentration of polyphenol gallic acid and anti-oxidant trolox equivalent than the ethanol extract. The body weight gain and food efficiency ratio was significantly lower in the OPE-20 group as compared with HF group (p < 0.05). The epididymal fat and retroperitoneal fat showed significantly lower weights and sizes in the OPE-20 group as compared with HF group (p < 0.05). The serum levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglyceride were significantly lower in the OPE-20 group as compared with HF group (p < 0.05). The OPE-20 group showed higher HDL cholesterol concentration than HF group (p < 0.05). Atherogenic index was ignificantly lower in as compared with HF group (p < 0.05). The serum levels of glucose, GOT and GPT were significantly lower in the OPE-20 group as compared with HF group (p < 0.05). In these results, we suggests that onion peel water extracts supplementation can reduces the serum lipid components and improves the lipid metabolism in hyperlipidemic mice induced with a high-fat diet.

양파 정식시기별 서릿발 피해 방지 및 피해주 재이식 효과 (Effects of planting date for the prevention of frost-pillar damage and replanting of damaged plant on onion (Allium cepa L.))

  • In the year 2013, onions cultivation in Jeonnam province suffered by frost-pillar damage. To reveal the aspects of the cause and outbreak, we surveyed those damaged areas. Usually the frost-pillar damage occurred in February. But the outbreak aspect is so unforeseeable. In 2013, the damage was shown as 10.6% in onion fields including paddy fields, but no damage was noticed in 2014. The damage was noticed as 77.8% in paddy fields and 30.1% in upland. And, by the difference of the onion transplanting date, it occurred as 0.7% by the middle of November to the early of November, 22% by the middle of November and 69.0% by the early of December. If one performed the supplementary planting at $3^{rd}$ week of February, the highest survival percent was observed as 53.3%. If the date is early, another frost-pillar damage was occurred. If it's late, the damaged plant was perished with dry. In any case, we found improper transplanting caused the yield decrease. Therefore, we recommend the timely transplanting is the most important way for the prevention of frost-pillar damage in the onion cultivation.

양파 껍질 추출물을 함유한 안면 마스크 팩의 주름 개선 효과 (Anti-wrinkle Effect of Facial Mask Pack Containing Oinon (Allium cepa) Skin Extracts)

  • In this study, the domestic onion skin has been used to investigate the anti-wrinkle effect of the ethanolic extract. The onion skin has been known to contain a large amount of antioxidant including quercetin. Solvent extraction by 80% ethanol was carried out of the onion skin. The high amount of quercetin have been identified using HPLC as a bioactive compound. The extraction yield of the quercetin increased according to temperature up to $80^{\circ}C$. Two different antioxidant assays (DPPH and ABTS) were performed to determine the free-radical scavenging activity of onion skin extracts. The antioxidant activities ($EC_{50}$ of DPPH) of the vitamin C and the onion extracts were 2.2 and $5.09{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. The results of ABTS tests were 2.33 (of vitamin C) and $2.40{\mu}g/mL$ (of the onion extracts), respectively. In a clinical study, a panel of 10 female volunteers between the ages of 30 and 40 (mean age: 42 years) was given a mask pack containing 1% of this extracts for 4 weeks. It was shown that a highly significant reduction in the deep and moderate wrinkled was obtained with those treated with this onion extracts as compared to the control group. The reduction in deep wrinkles increased with time. Eye wrinkle were reduced statistically significant (p<0.05). The application of the proper topical cream and mask pack containing onion skin extracts has therefore shown to be effective enhancing anti-wrinkle activities.

양파 공정육묘시 일장조건이 묘 생육 및 정식 후 구 비대에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Day Length on the Growth of Plug Seedlings and Bulbing after Planting in Onion (Allium cepa L.))

  • 양파 plug묘 육묘시 일장조절에 의한 우량묘 생산을 위해 자연일장을 대비로 하여 11.5시간, 12.5시간 및 13.5시간의 일장 하에서 월륜과 창녕대고 품종을 200공 plug tray에 육묘한 후에 직경 16cm pot에 이식하여 16시간의 일장 하에서 재배하였다. 엽수, 엽초경, 초장 및 엽초장은 시기가 경과할수록 증가하였으나 13.5시간 일장에서의 초장과 엽초경은 일장처리 20일 후에는 감소하였다. 일장에 따른 생육은 엽수 및 엽초경은 장일조건에서 생육이 좋았으나 초장 및 엽초장은 장일에서 억제되는 경향을 나타내었다. 장일조건에서 육묘한 것일수록 이식 후에 구가 크고 비대도 빨랐다. 이상의 결과로 볼 때 육묘기간 중의 장일처리로서 도장의 억제 및 우량묘 생산의 가능성을 보여주고 있다.

양파의 부위에 따른 pyruvic acid 함량 (Pyruvic Acid Content according to Different Portions in Onion(Allium cepa L.))

  • 양파 구의 부위 및 크기에 따른 pyruvic acid 함량과 양파 식물체의 구, 엽초, 엽 및 엽서에 따른 부위별 pyruvic acid와 당 함량을 분석하여 변화양상을 관찰하였다. 그 결과 양파구의 하부에서 pyruvic acid 함량이 가장 높았고, 다음이 상부였으며 중간부분의 함량이 가장 낮았다. 인편에 따라서는 외피로부터 2번째 인편에서 가장 낮았으며 3번째 인편부터는 구의 내부로 갈수록 pyruvic acid 함량이 증가하였다. 생육기간 경과에 따른 구, 엽초부 및 엽의 pyruvic acid 함량은 구비대 초기에는 구에 비해 엽과 엽초부의 pyruvic acid 함량이 더 높았으나 수확기에 이르러서는 구의 pyruvic acid 함량은 다소 증가하였지만 엽과 엽초부는 큰 폭으로 감소하였다. 총당 함량은 구비대 초기에는 큰 차이가 없었으나 구가 비대되면서 구의 총당 함량은 큰 폭으로 증가하였고, 엽과 엽초부는 감소하였다. 그리고 엽서에 따라서는 바깥쪽의 오래된 잎에서 pyruvic acid와 총당 함량이 가장 낮았으며 내부의 어린잎으로 갈수록 높아지는 경향이었다.
