By using an XPM (Cross Phase Modulation) wavelength converter, an all-optical AND gate, which is one of six fundamental logic gates, has been demonstrated. The wavelengths for probe and pump signals are 1553.8 and 1545 nm, respectively. First, characteristics of the XPM wavelength converter have been studied. When both probe and pump signals are driven by high power, the output power of the XPM wavelength is high. Based on this fact and the experiment, the all-optical AND gate has been porved. Probe and pump signals are transformed to pulse signals by using Mach-Zehnder modulator, which is induced by a pulse generator. Square pulse signals that are similar to the format of NRZ signals have been generated. By coupling two pulse signals into the XPM wavelength converter, AND characteristics in substantiated.

The wavelength converter is considered to be a key element of future dense WDM optical networks. It enables wavelength reuse and resolves contention problem. Moreover, the tunability of the wavelength converter enhance the flexibility of network systems by facilitating reconfigurable dynamic wavelength routing. In order to achieve optically tunable wavelength conversion, we recently proposed and experimentally demonstrated wavelength conversion and tuning based on cascaded sum and difference frequency generation in a Ti:PPLN channel waveguide. In this paper, we theoretically demonstrate that semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) with strong wavelength dependence of gain and phase are capable of all-optical inverted and non-inverted wavelength conversion (WC) over a wide range, with the assistance of an optical filter. First, the gain dynamics and phase dynamics in a common quantum well (QW) SOA with the $In_{0.53}Ga_{0.47}As/In_{0.7322}Ga_{0.2678}As_{0.5810}P_{0.4190}$ material system are found to be strongly dependent on wavelength, which is mainly related to the wavelength dependence of the differential gain and the differential refractive-index change. Second, the wavelength dependence in an all-optical wavelength converter based on the QW SOA cascaded with a detuning band pass filter is studied. Simulations show that the quality of the converted signal has little dependence on the operation wavelength. Both inverted and non-inverted WC can be achieved, over a large wavelength range. Therefore, although the gain and phase change are strongly wavelength-dependent, the effects of this dependence can be erased by appropriate optical filtering.

In this paper, we propose All-Optical WDM Buffer System for resolving the contention of Packets in Optical Packet Switching System. The proposed system consists of tunable wavelength converters based on SOA, N×N AWG, and fiber delay lines. This structure can reduce ASE and cross-talk noise because the contending packets are sent and buffered through each different path determined by a wavelength routing. We also performed buffering experiment for two contending WDM optical pulses with each 50ns width, and found that the contending problem is resolved well.
We report an experimental demonstration of 40 Gbps all-optical 3R regeneration with all-optical clock recovery based on InP semiconductor devices. We also obtain alloptical non-return-to-zero to return-to-zero (NRZ-to-RZ) format conversion using the recovered clock signal at 10 Gbps and 40 Gbps. It leads to a good performance using a Mach-Zehnder interferometric wavelength converter and a self-pulsating laser diode (LD). The self-pulsating LD serves a recovered clock, which has an rms timing jitter as low as sub-picosecond. In the case of 3R regeneration of RZ data, we achieve a 1.0 dB power penalty at $10^{-9}$ BER after demultiplexing 40 Gbps to 10 Gbps with an eletroabsorption modulator. The regenerated 3R data shows stable error-free operation with no BER floor for all channels. The combination of these functional devices provides all-optical 3R regeneration with NRZ-to-RZ conversion.

We demonstrate wavelength conversion of 2.5Gb/s optical signals by four-wave mixing (FWM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). We investigate the effect of input pump and signal powers on the coversion efficiency, optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) and extinction ratio to be a measure of performance in a wavelength converter. As a result, we show that the maximum bit error rate (BER) performance can be obtained by co promising among high-vonversion efficiency (minimum Pprobe), high-OSNR (maximum Pprobe) and low-cross-gain saturation effects (Pprobe kept at least 6dB weaker than Ppump). In our experiment, we obtain optimum performance at +3 dBm pump power and -6dBm signal power. The power penalty incurred in the wavelength conversion can be minimized by careful selection of the input pump and signal powers. We show that about 0.5dB power penalty for 3.2nm wavelength coversion at 10-10 BER is achievable.
We report the first demonstration of 10 Gb/s wavelength conversion in a Mach-Zehnder interferometric wavelength converter monolithically integrated with a loss-coupled DFB probe source. The integrated device is fabricated using a BRS (buried ridge stripe) structure with an undoped InP clad layer on the top of a passive waveguide to reduce high propagation loss. The device exhibited a static extinction ratio of 11 dB. Good performance at 10 Gb/s is obtained with an extinction ratio of 7 dB and a power penalty of 2.8 dB at a 10$^{-9}$ bit error rate.
Mach-Zehnder interferometric wavelength converters with monolithically integrated semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA's) have been fabricated and characteristics of wavelength conversion at 10 Gb/s have been investigated for wavelength span of 40 nm. The devices have been achieved by using a butt-joint combination of buried ridge structure type SOA's and passive waveguides. In the integration, a new method has been applied that removes p+InP cladding layer leading to high propagation loss and forms simultaneously the current blocking and the cladding layer using undoped InP. The module packaging has been achieved by using a titled fiber array for effective coupling into the tilted waveguide in the wavelength converter. Using the module, wavelength conversion with power penalty lower than 1 ㏈ at 10 Gb/s has been demonstrated for wavelength span of 40 nm. In addition, it is show that the module can provide 2R (re-amplification, re-shaping) operation by demonstrating the conversion with the negative penalty.
A new structure of tunable wavelength converter based on XCM in SOA was tried and analyzed. This converter used single SOA and had very simple structure. In this paper, results were experimentally obtained and demonstrated. Pump signal was generated with NRZ $(PRBS\;2^{31}-1)$ and data rate 2.5 Gbps. WDM multi conveted signals showed more than 8.3 dB extinction ratio. For BER performance, all these converted signals had within 5.0 dB power penalty compared with the pump signal. With these results, we showed that this converter was suitable for 2.5 Gbps WDM multi-channel wavelength converting.

In this letter, a scheme for increasing the input power dynamic range of wavelength converters based on cross-gain modulation (XGM) in semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA/s) is proposed. We investigate the effect of input pump and probe powers on the power penalty, the measure of performance for the wavelength converters. As a result, we show that the optimal bit error rate (BER) performance can be obtained when the probe power is kept 3 dB weaker than the pump power. Using this characteristic, we propose the wavelength converter scheme that controls the probe power level by monitoring the input pump power and adjusting the bias current of probe source accordingly. Consequently, the wavelength converter for wide input power dynamic range can be implemented. We show that an input power dynamic range of more than 20 dB at 2.5 Gb/s is achievable.
