  • Many researches on alkali-activated concrete that does not need the presence of cement as a binder have been carried out recently. Instead, the source of material such as fly ash and blast slag, that are rich in Silicon(Si) and Aluminium(Al), are activated by alkaline liquids to produce the binder. Hence concrete with no cement is effect reduction of CO$_2$ gas. In this study, we investigated the influence of the workability and compressive strength of mortar on water reducing agent, alkaline activator and curing method in oder to develop cementless blast slag based alkali-activated mortar. In view of the results, we found out that the flowability of mortar was lowered as increasing to mole concentration of NaOH, but not large the loss of flowability to 9M NaOH, most of water reducing agent was not effect. The compressive strength was improved as increasing to mole concentration of NaOH, was the most effect in 9M NaOH. The curing temperature and curing conditions on compressive strength of blast slag based alkali-activated mortar didn't influence.

  • The present study fabricated polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber-reinforced alkali-activated slag/fly ash (AASF) composites with varying mixture ratios of slag and fly ash. The thermomechanical behaviors of the AASF composites exposed to 200, 400, 600, or 800℃ were evaluated by means of compressive strength test, visual observation, and fire resistance tests. X-ray diffractometry, mercury intrusion porosimetry, and thermogravimetry tests were performed to analyze the microstructure change of the AASF composites upon exposure to high temperatures. Specimens exhibited a gradual strength loss up to 600℃, while also showing a significant decrease in the strength above 600℃. The fire resistance test revealed the occurrence of an inflection point as indicated by an increase in the internal temperature at around 200℃. In addition, specimens showed the dehydration of C-S-H gel, the presence of åkermanite, gehlenite, and anorthite upon exposure to 800℃, which is associated with the formation of macropore population with pores having diameters of 1-3 ㎛ and 20-40 ㎛. Visual observation indicated that the PVA fibers mitigated the cracking and/or spalling of the specimens upon exposure to 800℃.

  • In the present study, a porous concrete with alkali activated slag (AAS) and coal bottom ash was developed and the effect of carbonation on the physical property, microstructural characteristic, and heavy metal leaching behavior of the porous concrete were investigated. Independent variables, such as the type of the alkali activator and binder, the amount of paste, and $CO_2$ concentration, were considered. The experimental test results showed that the measured void ratio and compressive strength of the carbonated porous concrete exceeded minimum level stated in ACI 522 for general porous concrete. A new quantitative TG analysis for evaluating $CO_2$ uptake in AAS was proposed, and the result showed that the $CO_2$ uptake in AAS paste was approximately twice as high as that in OPC paste. The leached concentrations of heavy metals from carbonated porous concrete were below the relevant environmental criteria.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate basic mechanical properties of alkali-activated concretes based on GGBS(Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag). In this study, various mix ratios of alkali activated concretes based on sodium silicate and GGBS were set to evaluate concrete's compressive strengths and strains on the basis of results of existing alkali-activated cements and preliminary concrete tests, which were already performed by authors [Ref. 1]. Compressive strengths of concretes of ages 1, 3, 7, 28, 56 and 91 days were tested and investigated, respectively, and at early ages (< 7days) alkali-activated slag concrete (AASC) showed a high strength development, compared to that of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). A compressive strengths of AASC at age-3days range between 18 and 24 MPa, while those of OPC range 12 and 15 MPa. The stress-strain curve after maximum stress, on the other hand, is approximately reached at a compressive strain between 0.002 and 0.0025, which mechanical property is very similar to that of OPC.

  • This paper reported on the effect of blended activator on the physical properties of alkali-activated slag mortar. Five different activators(caustic alkalis) were used: sodium hydroxide(NaOH, A Case), calsium hydroxide($Ca(OH)_2$, B Case), magnesium hydroxide($Mg(OH)_2$, C Case), aluminum hydroxide($Al(OH)_3$, D Case), and potassium hydroxide(KOH, E Case). We blended five caustic alkalis with sodium carbonate($Na_2CO_3$). The dosage of five caustic alkalis was 3M and sodium carbonate was 1M, 2M and 3M. The result of flow and setting time was decrease as the dosage of sodium carbonate increase. But the compressive strength was increase as the dosage of sodium carbonate increase. It was shown that there is a good effect of blended caustic alkalis with sodium carbonate in alkali-activated slag mortar.

  • This study consist of research on the strength development properties of alkali activated slag(AAS) by differential combination of activators, initial protecting and curing conditions. 3 type of binders cured in the atmosphere, underwater and sealed were estimated compressive strength of 3, 7 and 28 days. Test results showed that strength development properties of binders varied with initial protecting and curing conditions because of ionized anions in pore water.

  • This study is to investigate the effect of various temperature and humidity conditions on the strength and efflorescence of alkali activated slag cement(AAS) using the red mud. As a result of examining the strength and efflorescence characteristics of AAS mixed with red mud according to the curing conditions, The compressive strength and flexural strength were the highest at 28 days, but the absorption rate, efflorescence area and soluble $Na^+$ elution were lowest in standard wet curing compared to the air curing, high temperature curing and low temperature curing.

  • Strength model for blasted furnace slag mortar blended with sodium was investigated in this study. The main parameters of AAS (alkali activated slag) mortar were dosage of alkali activator, water to binder ratio (W/B), and aggregate to binder ratio (A/B). For evaluating the property related to the dosage of alkali activator, sodium carbonate ($Na_2CO_3$) of 4~8% was added to 4% dosage of sodium hydroxide (NaOH). W/B and A/B was varied 0.45~0.60 and 2.05~2.85, respectively. An alkali quality coefficient combining the amounts of main compositions of source materials and sodium oxide ($Na_2O$) in sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate is proposed to assess the compressive strength of alkali activated mortars. Test results clearly showed that the compressive strength development of alkali-activated mortars were significantly dependent on the proposed alkali quality coefficient. Compressive strength development of AAS mortars were also estimated using the formula specified in the previous study, which was calibrated using the collected database. Predictions from the simplified equations showed good agreements with the test results.

  • This paper examines the hydration and physical properties of alkali-blast furnace slag cement activated by Na$_2$SiO$_3$, Na$_2$CO$_3$, NaOH, Na$_2$SO$_4$. Four levels of Na$_2$O content in mixtures, 1, 3, 5, and 7 wt%, were investigated, and a W/S ratio 0.5 was used to prepare paste and mortar specimens. Compressive strength measurement of mortars was carried out adding alkali activated slag 30 wt% to OPC. The main hydration products with alkali activator kinds were C-S-H,C$_4$AH$\_$13/, AFt and Al(OH)$_3$ etc. For using Na$_2$CO$_3$ activated slag, hydration ratio of slag was higher than that of different activators, and Na$_2$SO$_4$ activated slag mortar appeared the highest compressive strength values at 28 days with activator content of 5 and 7 wt%.
