  • The alkali-activation reaction of two types of typical kaolin calcined at various lower temperatures was investigated at room temperature and at elevated temperatures. For the assessment of the reactivity, the temperature increase and the setting time of pastes prepared with calcined kaolin and sodium/potassium hydroxide solution were measured. Unlike raw kaolin, calcined kaolin samples prepared at various temperature showed an alkali-activation reaction according to the different aspects of the changes in the mineral phases. The reactivity with alkaline solutions was exceedingly activated in the samples calcined at $600-650^{\circ}C$, but the reactivity gradually decreased as the temperature increased in a higher temperature range, most likely due to the changes in the crystal structure of the dehydrated kaolin. The activation effect of the calcination treatment was achieved at reaction temperatures that exceeded $60^{\circ}C$ and was enhanced as the temperature increased. The reactivity of the calcined kaolin with an alkaline solution was more enhanced with the solution of a higher concentration and with a solution prepared from sodium hydroxide rather than potassium hydroxide.

  • In this study, the effects of NaOH and KOH alkali activators of various concentrations on the performance of alkali activated waste concrete powder (WCP) was discussed. The samples activated by alkaline solutions were cured for up to 28 days and then compressive strength test was performed. These samples were also characterized using various techniques to explore the phase evolution, and microstructural changes. Results showed superior performance of NaOH-activated WCP. Additionally, activation of WCP by 8M concentrated alkali solutions improved the strength, reactivity and microstructure of alkali activated WCP binder sample.

  • Investigation of alkali activation of fly ash and blast furnace slag was carried out using waterglass and sodium hydroxide. XRD, FTIR, $^{29}Si$ and $^{27}Al$ NMR, TGA and SEM were used to observed the reaction products and microstructure of the fly ash/slag cement (FSC) pastes. The reaction products were amorphous or low-ordered calcium silicate hydrate and aluminosilicate gel produced from alkali activation of blast furnace slag and fly ash, respectively. On the basis of this investigation, waterglass solution with a modulus(Ms) of 1.0 and 1.2 is recommended for alkali activation of fly ash and blast furnace slag. Morphology of FSC pastes alkali-activated with Ms of 1.0 and 1.2 shows a more solid and continuous matrix due to restructuring of gel-like reaction products from alkali-activated fly ash and blast furnace slag together with another hydrolysis product(i.e., silica gel) from water glass.

  • Because the physical·chemical properties of bottom ash are inferior, most bottom ash is disused. But the use of bottom ash helps in reducing environmental pollution and solving some bottom ash waste problems. So, we have been investigating about the optimum mixture, hardening mechanism, curing condition and environmental safety of a paste composed of a bottom ash and alkali. optimal mixing proportion of bottom ash solid was cement 5%, water 30%, NaOH 10%. After curing during 28days, bottom ash solid can be achieved compressive strength 15.13MPa. As a result, Compressive strength tests of alkali-activated bottom ash have potential as a replacement of coarse aggregate.

  • In order to give a silk-like touch to PET fabrics, the PET fabrics were treated with NaOH alkaline solution in various conditions. In alkaline treatment, the liquor flow type pilot weight reduction apparatus with magnetostrictive ultrasonic transducer was used for the study. The weight loss of PET fabrics hydrolyzed in 4% and 6% NaOH solution, at $95^\circ{C}$ and $99^\circ{C}$ for 60min. with ultrasonic application showed 3.7~4.6% higher than that of treated fabric without ultrasonic application. From the difference of specific weight loss, the treatment condition of the maximum of hydrolyzation effect appeared at $95^\circ{C}$ in $4^\circ{C}$ and at $90^\circ{C}$ in 6% NaOH solution, respectively. During the alkali hydrolysis of PET fabrics, the decomposition rate constant(k) increased exponentially with the treatment temperature and were not related with ultrasonic cavitation. The activation energy$(E_a)$ in decomposition of PET fabrics were 21.06kcal/mol with ultrasonic application and 21.10kcal/mol without ultrasonic application. The ultrasonic application gave a little higher value of the activation entropy$(\Delta{S}^\neq)$ and a little lower value of Gibbs free energy$(\Delta{S}^\neq)$ compared with not used ultrasonic apparatus.

  • For many years, alkali activated blast furnace slag cement containing no ordinary portland cement has received much attention in the view of energy saving and its many excellent properties. We examined the structural change of slag glass which was activated by alkali metal compounds using IR spectroscopy. The properties of hydrated products and unhydrated slag grains was characterized by XRD and micro-conduction calorimeter. Ion concentration change in the liquid during the hydration of blast furnace slag was also studied to investigated the hydration mechanism.

  • Nowadays, research about using recycled aggregate as alkali activator has been investigated. By the mechanism of Alkali activation, blast furnace slag's potential hydraulis property would be activated. Thee application of this technique is considered as fit for low strength concrete, so it's suitable in concrete secondary production such as bricks and blocks. Aside alkali activator, sulfate could also activate blast furnace slag's potential hydranlis property. In this research, gypsum(CaSO4·2H2O)has been added with blast furnace slag. Fundamental experiment such as flow and strength has been tested to evalnate effect of gypsum's activation property.

  • The Fly-ash makes an Alumino-silicate gel when it mixes an alkali or a silicate solution. This Alumino-silicate gel is produced to the activation of an alkali silicate. And this act to the binder and makes a combine of particles. This study involved mechanical strengths of an Alumino-silicate Gel based the Fly-ash with an alkali solution. NaOH, KOH were utilized to an alkali solution. The alkali solution concentration was varied from 6 to 12M and the some added also the Meta-kaolin, Waterglass so that it made high the mechanical performance. Based on the experimental result, the compressive strengths increased as the quantity of the Meta-kaolin increased. And a mechanical strengths appeared according to the concentration of an alkali solution so that it was different. XRD, FT-IR have been used to characterize mechanical performance.

  • In this study, the potential use of indigenous natural loess(Hwangtoh) as a new construction material, via alkali activation in conjunction with microwave heating, was investigated. Hwangtoh pastes with three different mix proportions of varying alkali liquid concentrations at a constant liquid-to-Hwangtoh ratio of 0.55 were prepared. Through the investigation it was found that it is possible to prepare Hwangtoh paste with $19.02N/mm^2$ at the age of 4 hours with the alkali solution of 8M NaOH and 1:4.5 mass ratio of liquefied $Na_2SiO_3$ at the curing temperature of $60^{\circ}C$ by microwave heating. The strength development at early age of the alkali activated Hwangtoh paste specimens may be attributed to both a higher rate of reaction and moisture evaporation due to microwave heating.

  • Weakness of fine powder of blast furnace slags includes the decrease of initial intensity and delay of setting time. To solve this problem, there has been research on the alkali activation to induce hardening using alkaline chemical. However, the use of chemicals is dangerous and not cost effective, which can be solved by using recycled aggregates, one of construction wastes. The role of alkali activator can be substituted by alkali of non-hydrated cement included in recycled aggregates. In this study, the alkaline value of recycled aggregates will be evaluated through the comparison of molarity of sodium hydroxide (NaOH).
