The distribution and characteristics of spawning beds of the Pacific herring Clupea pallasii, were observed by scuba diving in Jinhae Bay, Korea, with a focus on marine vegetation as adhesive substrates and egg density during the spawning season. In 2017, the fertilized eggs of C. pallasii were mainly found attached to the leaves of algae species Carpopeltis cornea, Gracilaria textorii, and Acrosrium polyneurum at the rocky shore in Wonpo-dong and Jeodo. The mean density of fertilized eggs in C. pallasii spawning beds was $153,776eggs/m^2$ off Wonpo-dong and $856,430eggs/m^2$ off Jeodo, giving an estimated total of $5.345{\times}10^9$ eggs in Wonpo-dong and $3.3074{\times}10^{10}$ eggs in Jeodo. We examined spawning beds with an area of $38,619m^2$ off Wonpo-dong and $34,760m^2$ off Jeodo. The choice of spawning bed may be affected by the composition of marine vegetation, such as the algal diversity of rocky shore environments, which could affect adhesive substrates and egg density during the spawning season. The results of the present study suggest that the spawning season of C. pallasii in Jinhae Bay is in January to mid-February.

The Ceramiales is the most diverse and species-rich group (2,669 spp.) of red algae, and it is widely distributed from tropical to polar oceans. Mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) and other genes have contributed to our knowledge regarding the classification and phylogeny of this diverse red algal group; however, the mitogenome architecture remains understudied. Here, we compared 42 mitogenomes, including 19 newly generated in this study, to expand our knowledge. The number of genes in mitogenome varied from 43 to 68 due to gene duplication. The mitogenome architecture was also variable, categorized into four types (A-D): type A = ancestral type with a basic composition; type B = those with inverse transpositions; type C = those with inverted duplications; and type D = those with both inversion and duplication. The palindromic and inverted repeats were consistently found in flanking regions of the rearrangement, especially near the cob and nad6 genes. The three rearranged mitogenome architectures (types B, C, D) are the first report of these in red algae. Phylogenetic analyses of 23 protein-coding genes supported the current familial classification of the Ceramiales, implying that the diversity of mitogenome architecture preceded the phylogenetic relationships. Our study suggests that palindromic and inverted repeats may drive mitogenome architectural variation.
The distributions of phytoplankton community are investigated from 29 reservoirs in Yeongsan and Seomjin River Basins, Korea. As a microalgal flora, a total of 424 species of phytoplankton were identified. They were 157 Chlorophyceae, 161 Bacillariophyceae, 39 Cyanophyceae, and 67 other algal taxa. The phytoplankton diversity were low in stream type reservoirs such as Kumho, Youngsan and Youngam Reservoirs. The population density of phytoplankton ranged from 29 cells $mL^{-1}$ to 53,161 cells $mL^{-1}$. The dominant phytoplankton species more than 20% of total standing crops were $Asterionella$$formosa$, $Aulacoseira$$ambigua$, $Aulacoseira$$distans$, $Aulacoseira$$granulata$, $Cyclotella$ sp., $Synedra$$acus$, $Coelastrum$$reticulatum$, $Pandorina$$morum$, $Scenedesmus$$arcuatus$, $Aphanothece$$clathrata$, $Microcystis$$aeruginosa$, $Phormidium$ sp. The concentration of chlorophyll $a$ ranged from 0.41 mg $m^{-3}$~220.72 mg $m^{-3}$, and showed highest concentration in Gaecho-je. The concentrations of TN and TP have no clear relationships with chlorophyll $a$ concentrations.

The macroalgal community structure was examined at the subtidal zones of six study sites, on the Southern coast of Korea from between May and August 2015. A total of 132 seaweeds, comprising 10 green, 28 brown and 94 red Seaweed, were identified. The seaweed biomass was $80.32g\;dry\;wt.\;m^{-2}$ in average, and it was maximal at Geomundo ($166.94g\;dry\;wt.\;m^{-2}$) and minimal at Byeongpungdo ($14.52g\;dry\;wt.\;m^{-2}$). On the basis of the biomass, the Ecklonia cava was a representative species, distributed widely in the subtidal zone of the three islands (Yeoseodo, Geomundo, Baekdo). Also, the Sargassum sp. was dominant at Sejondo and Hongdo. The turbidity and light transmittance was divided into two groups. The seaweed community structure of group A (Byeongpungdo, Sejondo, Geomundo) was characterized by high turbidity, low light transmittance and a lower habitat depth than were observed in group B (Hongdo, Baekdo, Yeoseodo). As the water depth increased, the biomass decreased due to the lowered light transmittance. In Byeongpungdo and Sejondo, which showed high turbidity and low light transmittance, the degree of seaweed coverage was decreased with the depth of water. The ESGII ratio of the Ecological Status Group was higher than fourty percentage in Byeongpungdo and Baekdo. Community indices were as follows: dominance index (DI) 0.35-0.90, richness index (R) 7.03-17.93, evenness index (J′) 0.22-0.60, and diversity index (H′) 0.79-2.18. The Macroalgal zonation of the subtidal zone was calculated by the Ecklonia cava and Brown algal population on five islands(Byeongpungdo, Yeoseodo, Geomundo, Beakdo, Hongdo). On the other hand, Undaria pinnatifida and Sargassum sp. dominated at Sejondo. Additionally, the biomass ratio and the species richness of green algae was lower in group A. These differences in the seaweed community structure may have resulted from the effects of turbidity and light transmittance.

This study compares and contrasts the dynamics of plankton in 31 temperate lakes and reservoirs, and considers particularly the biomass ratio of zooplankton to phytoplankton and ecological model application. A total of 89 species of zooplankton were identified (70 rotifers, 14 cladocerans and 5 copepods) and a total of 554 species of phytoplankton were identified (176 Bacillariophyceae, 237 Chlorophyceae, 68 Cyanophyceae, and 73 other algal taxa). The total plankton abundance and species diversity were showed distinctive spatial and seasonal variation. Annual average phytoplankton density was $7,350{\pm}15,592$ cells $mL^{-1}$ (n=124), and the lowest was $855{\pm}448$ cells $mL^{-1}$ (n=4), while the highest was $72,048{\pm}13,4631$ cells $mL^{-1}$ (n=4). For zooplankton, small rotifer groups dominated the study sites, and approximately 3~10 species appeared in the study sites. Statistical analysis and an ecological model application revealed that the size of reservoirs affected the structure size of plankton community, i.e. relatively large number of species were found in smaller reservoirs. From this result, we can conclude that management strategy for the reservoir environment has to be focused more on small-size reservoirs, in terms of plankton community ecology.

Environmental factors and epilithic diatom communities in the lower streams near the harbor region of South Korean peninsula were examined during no monsoon period in May 2013. The sampling of water and epilithic diatoms was conducted at both streams, 19 regulated streams (RS) that there are one or several dams constructed in the river system, and 19 un-regulated streams (US) that there are no dams within the river. A cluster analysis based on the number of species and abundance of epilithic diatoms through the stations, divided into three groups such as groups I (mainly US), II (mixed with US and RS) and III (mainly RS), respectively. Group I showed that water quality is good and high diversity of diatom, while Group II and III was water quality is relatively poor, but not differed in biomass of diatom from Group I. In addition, Group II that had high conductivity, nitrogen and phosphorus, was the lowest in diatom diversity among them. Dominant species were Nitzschia palea (17%) and Navicula seminuloides (11%) in Group I, Nitzschia inconspicua (19%) and Navicula perminuta (9%) in Group II, and Nitzschia inconspicua (15%) and Nitzschia palea (14%) in Group III, respectively. These taxa were widely distributed in brackish water, and not closely related with specific water quality, like eutrophic water. However, the groups II and III belonged to RS, had not only little biomass, but bad water quality such as high concentrations of nutrient and chlorophyll-a. Therefore, to determine the effect of dam construction on the lower water ecosystem, the planktonic algae, which can occur algal bloom in the estuary, also was considered to be a parallel investigation.
The Jido Pond system was investigated from April, 1979 through March, 1980, in respect of seasonal changes in physico-chemical factors: i.e., temperature, pH, DO, BOD, COD, $Cl^-, \; Mg^{++}$, alkalinity, detergent, $SiO_2, PO_4\;^{3-}, NH_4\;^+, NO_2\;^-, NO_3\;^-$, total N, OM and OC; phytoplankton community growth; and the ecosystem metabolism. The phytoplankton community was represented by 23 species belonging to Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta and Cyanophyta; each sharing 11, 9 3 respectively. The Chlorophyceans dominated the phytoplankton community contributing 75% of the total ?미 counts. The ranges of biotic diversity indices were, d, 0.85~2.80; H, 1.10~2.40; c, 0.13~0/40; and 3, 0.56~0.90. The chlorophyll standing crop varied in between 0.043 and 0.385g/$\textrm{cm}^2$ surface area. The ranges of photosynthetic and respiratory rates were 0.36~4.50; and 0.10~1.40 $O_2$ mg/1/hr, respectively. The monthly areal net primary production varied from 23.9 to 305.1C g/$\textrm{m}^2$/month. The Eu of the net production seasonally varied in between 0.31 and 7.80%, and the annual mean was 2.44%. The annual turnover times of phosphorus and nitrogen were 20 and 3 days, respectively.
