River and stream are the important water supply source in our lives. Eutrophication causes excessive green algae growth including microcystis, which makes harmful to ecosystem and human health. Therefore, the water purification process to remove green algae is essential. In Korea, green algae alarm system exists depending on the concentration of green algae cells in river or stream. To maintain the growth amount under control, green algae monitoring system is being used. However, the unmanned, small and automatic monitoring system would be preferable. In this study, we developed the 3D printed device to measure the concentration of green algae cell using microfluidic droplet generator and deep learning. Deep learning network was trained by using transfer learning through pre-trained deep learning network. This newly developed microfluidic cell counter has sufficient accuracy to be possibly applicable to green algae alarm system.
The objective of this study was to investigate the characteristics of adhesion and detachment of algae on various materials of drainage canal in the sedimentation basin. The influence of surface washability, surface roughness, phosphorous concentration was studied using stainless steel, cement block and ceramic panel. The algae attached content of cement block was higher than that of the ceramic coating panel. The attachment varied significantly with respect to exposure time and different materials. the attachment was higher on rough surface (cement block) when compared to smooth surfaces. The content of attached algae increased with increasing phosphorous concentration in water. The detachment efficient of algae was higher on ceramic panel.

Objective: An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of algae-based antioxidant containing Se yeast (EconomasE®) on the growth performance, visceral organ weight, meat quality, and oxidative stability of broiler chickens. Methods: Nine hundred sixty, day-old male broiler chickens (Cobb, 43.97±0.55 g) were divided into three dietary treatments and allocated into 12 deep litter pens in a completely randomized design giving 4 replicate cages for each treatment. Three dietary treatments were: i) control (CON, basal diet with sufficient nutrient), ii) vitamin E (VitE, basal diet supplemented with 100 IU VitE), and iii) Algae-based antioxidant containing Se yeast (EcoE, basal diet supplemented with 0.2% algae-based antioxidant containing Se yeast: EconomasE®). Maize soybean meal based basal diets were formulated to meet or exceed the nutrition requirement for broiler chickens. Chickens were fed ad-libitum experimental diets during the 42 days experiment period. On days 21 and 42, body weight and feed intake were measured to calculate the feed conversion ratio of the chickens. Intestine and visceral organs were measured together with meat quality and oxidative stability on days 14 and 42. Results: Chickens fed with EcoE showed improved (p<0.05) growth performance, meat quality, and higher (p<0.05) oxidative stability compared to the chicken fed on CON. Moreover, broiler chickens fed with EcoE showed similar (p<0.05) growth performance with better (p<0.05) meat quality and higher oxidative stability compared to the broiler chickens fed VitE (p<0.05). Conclusion: The algae-based antioxidant containing Se yeast can be supplemented into commercial broiler diets as a substitution of VitE while maintaining growth performance with enhancing meat quality and oxidative stability of the broiler chickens.
The purpose of this study was conducted to indentified the fixing quality of $CO_2$, the most important greenhouse effect gas, by microalgae Chlorella ellipsoidea in batch test apparatus. The glass flask of $1.4{\ell}$ culture media which was saturated with 99.99% pure $CO_2$ gas was setted water bath of $25^{\circ}C$, 5000Lux, and seeded 100$m\ell$ algae liquid. We checked the change of inorganic carbon concentration and algae population with time in culture media. The result were next: the growth of algae population relied on aquatic IC(inorganic carbon) concentration. And the pH was increased with decrease of IC concentration. The growth of algae population had positive correalation with $CO_2$ concentration, and the coefficient of correlation was 0.982. The specific growth rate($\mu$) of Chlorella ellipsoidea was 1.104/d, the maximum specific growth $rate({\mu}_{max}$) of 9.21/d, and helf velocity constant($K_s$) of $259mg/{\ell}$ by Monod equation.
In this investigation, ecotoxicity of nano and micro metal oxides, namely silica ($SiO_2$) and alumina ($Al_2O_3$), on the growth of green algae (Porphyridium aerugineum Geitler) is discussed. Effects of nano and micro particles on the growth, chlorophyll content and protein content of algae are analysed using standard protocols. Results indicate that $SiO_2$ nano and micro $SiO_2$ particles are non-toxic to P. aerugineum Geitler up to a concentration of 1000 mg/L. In addition, $Al_2O_3$ microparticles are less toxic to P. aerugineum Geitler, whereas $Al_2O_3$ nanoparticles are found to be highly toxic at 1000 mg/L. Moreover, $Al_2O_3$ nanoparticles decrease the growth, chlorophyll content, and protein content of tested algae. In addition, zeta potential and contact angle are also important in enhancing the toxicity of metal oxide nanoparticles in aquatic environment. This study highlights a new insight into toxicity evaluation of nanoparticles on beneficial aquatic organisms such as algae.
This study is done to prove the premise that both alkalinity and hardness affect on the dissolved phosphorus concentration so that the growth of algae is also affected in water bodies like rivers and lakes. Statistical analysis of the water quality data of 13 reservoirs collected for the last decade shows the relations between alkalinity and chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ and between hardness and chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ are not linear but follow second order equation. This relation seems to be due to two antagonistic effects accompanying a simultaneous increase in alkalinity and hardness. The increase stimulates the growth of algae by supplying carbonates and $Ca^{2+}$ to algae and at same time it causes a decrease in soluble phosphorus which retards algae to grow. These opposing tendencies are confirmed by theoretical calculations with the MINTEQ model. There seems to be ranges of alkalinity and hardness that are in favor of algae growth; the ranges are less than 44 mg/L as $CaCO_3$ in alkalinity and also less than 63 mg/L as $CaCO_3$ in hardness. This finding will provide a solid base to develop an effective water quality management of water bodies.
Effects of phosphorous (P) and methylglyoxal (MG) on the cell number, dry weight, chlorophyll content, photosynthetic and respiratory rate, phosphate uptake and protein content of green algae (Scenedesrnus obliquus) were studied. The algal cell number from the medium treated with 0.5-1.0 mM of MG at 1/2 P or 1/4 P concentration was significantly lower than those of algae treated :with full strength of phosphrous in medium. The inhibitory effect of MG on algal cell division was enhenced at low concentration of phosphorous in medium. At the beginning of logrithmic phase of algal growth, the mean dry weight of algae from the medium without MG-treatment in 1/2 P media was significantly higher than that of algae treated with MG. After logrithmic phase of growth cycle, the mean dry weight of algae from the medium with 1.0 mM of MG-treatment in 1/4 P media was significantly lower than that of algae treated with or without MG. At logrithmic phase of algal growth, there were significant differences in the chlorophyll content among all groups of tested algae with various concentrations of P and MG. At 15 days after inoculation, the mean chlorophyll content per algal cell from the media without MG-treatment in 1/2P was significantly higher than that of other cells from MG-treated media. The adverse effect of MG at concentration of 0.5-1.0mM in 1/2 and 1/4 P media on photosynthetic rate was observed. The mean photosynthetic rate of algal cell without P and MG treatment at 15 days after inoculation was significantly higher than that of MGtreated algae. After logarithmic phase, the algal cell treated with 0.5mM of MG with full strength of phosphorous showed significantly high respiratory rate than that of other cell groups. There were significant differences in mean phosphate uptake rate among all groups of Scenedesmus obliquus at logarithmic phase. At 12 days after inoculation, phosphate uptake rate per each algal cell from the basic media without MG and P treatment was rapidly reduced which shows early introduction to stationary phase.
Microalgal bioremediation of CO2, nutrients, endocrine disruptors, hydrocarbons, pesticides, and cyanide compounds have evaluated comprehensively. Microalgal mitigation of nutrients originated from municipal wastewaters, surface waters, and livestock wastewaters has shown great applicability. Algal utilization on secondary and tertiary treatment processes might provide unique and elegant solution on the removing of substances originated from various sources. Microalgae have displayed 3 growth regimes (autotrophic, heterotrophic, and mixotrophic) through which different organic and inorganic substances are being utilized for growth and production of different metabolites. There are still some technology challenges requiring innovative solutions. Strain selection investigation should be directed towards identification of algal that are extremophiles. Understanding and manipulation of metabolic pathways of algae will possible unfold solution to utilization of algae for mitigation of dissolve organic nitrogen in wastewaters.

In this study, we investigated the cultivation possibility using Hydrodictyon reticulatum in a continuous raceway pond as a tertiary sewage treatment plant. The cultivation possibility was evaluated by varying the light quantity, wavelength, and hydraulic retention time (HRT). Experimental results showed that the growth rates of algae and the removal efficiencies of nutrients increased as the light quantity increased, and the maximum photosynthetic rate was maintained at $100{\mu}mol/m^2{\cdot}s$ or higher. When wavelength was varied, nutrient removal efficiency and growth rate increased in the following order: green light, red light, white light, and blue light. The nutrient removal efficiencies and algae productivity in HRT 4 d were better than in HRT 8 d. We conclude that if Hydrodictyon reticulatum is cultivated in a raceway pond and used as a tertiary treatment facility in a sewage treatment plant, nutrients can be effectively removed, and production costs can be reduced.

In order to construct an artificial cultivation of Nostoc flagelliforme on solid medium, we attempted to assess the viability of approaches, which utilized either BG-11 agar or sand medium using both sterile and non-sterile algal segments. In the trial in which the BG -11 agar medium was inoculated with the non-sterile algal segments, the algae exhibited the rapid growth in the initial 4 days of cultivation. However, after 4 days of cultivation, the growth rate of the algae slowed, and the algal growth was completely stopped by 7 days of cultivation. When the BG -11 medium was inoculated with the sterile algal segments, the algae exhibited the rapid growth for a longer period of 8 days, reaching a length of 24.9 mm. The growth rate during this period was measured to be $24.5\%$. After the 8 days of cultivation, the algal growth rate began to slow and had almost stopped by the 13 days of cultivation. On the other hand, when the sterile algal segments were inoculated onto a sand plate, the algal segments decomposed, reaching total decomposition after 11 days of cultivation. By way of contrast, the desiccation treatment samples continued to grow for 14 days of cultivation. After 14 days of cultivation, the algae achieved a length of 26.1 mm, with a growth rate of $30.6\%$. Our results indicate that periodic desiccation may constitute an effective strategy for the prevention of algal decomposition.
