Nitrogen flux release from organically enriched sediments into overlying water, which may have significantly influence on water quality and increasing continuous eutrophication. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the remediation efficiency of oyster shell powder and its treated product into organically enriched sediment in terms of nitrogen flux, organic matter, chlorophyll-a, pH and dissolved oxygen (DO). The TOSP was mainly composed of CaO2. The application of TOSP into the sediment has increased the pH, DO and significantly decreased the concentrations of NH4+-N and T-N compared to other basins. On the other hand, nitrate was enriched with the addition of treated oyster powder, an oxygen releasing compound on both phases. Furthermore, chlorophyll-a was found to be increasing with time in the control basin meanwhile it dropped drastically with the addition of TOSP, which implied on the repression of algal growth owing to blockage of nitrogen source migrating from the sediment. This study has shown that the TOSP was effective to improve sediment-water quality, diminish eutrophication and control harmful algae blooms in a marine environment. Therefore, it is a good reference as an effective environmental remediation agent.
Bromophenols are a group of compounds found only in marine organisms. They accumulate and give a sea-like aroma to marine animals. Cultivated fishes generally contain low concentrations of bromophenols compared to wild fishes. Feeding cultivated fishes with bromophenol-containing seaweed could increase their bromophenol content and thus improve their flavor quality. We evaluated the effect of an experimental feed on the bromophenol content of green grouper, Epinephelus coioides, during an 8-week feeding period. Green grouper individuals were divided into two groups and fed with conventional feed or experimental feed containing dried seaweed. Fish were collected biweekly for 8 weeks for proximate analyses and bromophenol content evaluations. Bromophenols were extracted, identified, and quantified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Both moisture and lipid contents were generally higher in the controls; however, total weight and protein content were higher in the experimental group. Only 2,4-dibromophenol and 2,4,6-tribromophenol were detected in the samples. Throughout the 8 weeks, 2,4,6-tribromophenol concentrations were higher in the experimental group (9.20-32.3 ng/g dry wt) than in the control group (7.33-18.79 ng/g dry wt), but no significant difference in 2,4-dibromophenol concentration was detected between the two groups. The total bromophenol content reached a maximum at week 4 for the experimental feed and week 6 for the control. In short, experimental feed that incorporated bromophenol-containing seaweed increased the total bromophenol content in the green grouper.

To evaluate the effects of submerged aerators installed at Chudong and Muneui areas in Daechung Reservoir on improvement of water quality and reduction of algal bloom, the water quality was monitored at the effected and control areas at the time of operation. The water temperature and concentrations of dissolved oxygen, total phosphorus, and total nitrogen in depth at the effected and control areas were not different each other, indicating the submerged aerators at these areas are not effective for circulation of water body and reduction of nutrients. In warmer season, the concentrations of total phosphorus in deep water, which was probably released from contaminated sediment or inflowed from watershed, was high. To decide the operation of aerators in this season, the concentration of total phosphorus in water should be considered because the dispersed phosphorus by operation of aerators can enhance the algal growth.
The study was conducted to develop the suitable abalone's diets for the indoor tank culture. The young abalone Haliotis discus hannai Ino sized ca. 20, 30 and 40 nun in shell length were fed three different diets, dried sea mustard Undaria pinnatifida HARVEY (control), artificial diet and terrestrial plants e. g. Chinese cabbage and Perilla leaf for 2 years. The growth rate of abalones fed an artificial diet was slightly higher than that of abalones from the control. However, the growth rate of abalones from terrestrial plants was significantly lower than that of abalones fed a control or an artificial diet (P< 0.05). The daily feeding rate of young abalones from terrestrial plants was slightly higher than that of abalones from the control. While, that of abalones from an artificial diet was approximately $30\%$ of that of abalones from a control or a terrestrial plants diet. The feed efficiency of abalone from artificail diet was higher than that of abalones from a control or a terrestrial plants diet, and the smaller size of young abalone showed the higher the feed efficiency. The EFA index values ${{\sum}n9/(20:4n6+20:5n3+22:6n3}$ of the dried sea mustard and the artificial diet were 1.26 and 3.64, respectively. These values were favorable, but the value of terrestrial plant, Perilla leaf was 127.00 indicating poor EFA index for normal growth of abalone.
This study was conducted to determine removal effect on phytoplankton (chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ as whole algae) and cyanobacteria by a fish Pseudorasbora parva and macroinvertebrate Palaemon paucidens in September 2006. Three treatments with 25 (T1), 50 (T2) and 100 (T3) individuals along with control (C1, no input fish), and two treatments with 25 (T4) and 50 (T5) individuals along with control (C1) were made for fish and macroinvertebrate, respectively. The initial concentrations of chlorophyll-${\alpha}$$(Chl_i)$ in each 10L test tank were set up for the levels of $95{\sim}100{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ and the daily values were monitored in the test tank during 7 days. In the lab tests, P. parva did not show Chl-${alpha}$ removal effect; the removal rate of Chl-${alpha}$ for P. parva was -58% in T1, -56% in T2, and 61% in T3 during the test period. In contrast, P. paucidens. in the treatments of T4 and T5 removed the phytoplankton effectively and the removal effect were appeared to be 33% and 22%, respectively. Also, P. paucidens showed high feeding efficiency in the removal of cyanobacteria. The levels of cyanobacteria were greatly lowed from 6,048 to 927 cells $mL^{-1}$ in T4 and from 6,539 to 1,053 cells $mL^{-1}$ in T5, resulting in 85% and 84% in the removal effect, respectively. Our results for biomanipulation tests suggest that P. paucidens may be used as a potential candidate organism for algae control in spite of the preliminary results by laboratory tests.

Ecological influences of indigenous freshwater bivalve Unio douglasiae on the water quality and epilithic diatom community was examined with artificial stream (AST), which constructed in a laboratory daily receiving the eutrophic lake water. For the colonization of new periphyton community, forty commercial slide glasses were deposited as a substrate into the lowest part of each AST. Prior to 1 week, the AST was operated to induce the freely-colonization of the algal community in the absence of mussels. After the mussels was introduced at 435 indiv. $m^{-2}$ between step 1 and step 5, the passed water and substrates were daily collected to analysis the change of water quality and lotic and lentic algae abundance for 10 days. Compared to the control, turbidity (60.0% of control), suspended solids (62.5%), and chlorophyll-$\alpha$ (72.2%) in mussel-passed waters were decreased significantly, while a strong increase of ammonia (up to 800% of control) was companied with the decrease of dissolved oxygen (19.5% of control) and total phosphorus (23.9%), respectively. On average, the concentrations of suspended solids (67.0% of control) and chlorophyll-$\alpha$ (89.4%) in mussel-treated substrates were remarkably increased, however algal abundance in its water simultaneously decreased. These results indicate that incidentally or purposely mussel introductions can decrease organic matter of the stream and increase transparency of stream water, however, mussel-mediated nutrient and pseudofeces release may stimulate the adverse growth of periphyton or phytoplankton community in the lower stream or reservoir.
To investigate the effects of barley straw on microflora, acetylene reducing activity, enzyme activity and sugar in relation to nitrogen fixation in submerged soil. The obtained results were summarized as follow: Of the nitrogen fixing microorganisms, the number of Azotobactor tended to increase with the application of barley straw as the rice grew. The number of Clostridia were increased at the tillering stage of plant and decreased thereafter, and that of Blue-green algae tended to increase at the heading stage and to decrease thereafter. On the other hand, the number of Blue-green algae tended to increase by the application of barley straw. Acetylene reducing activity was decreased in the heading stage and increased in the harvesting stage. There was no difference of acetylene reducing activity between the application of barley straw and control. In submerged soil treated with barley straw, enzyme activity of ${\beta}$-glucosidase was increaded significantly but that of phosphatase was not entirely affected. Of the change of enzyme activity, the observation of ${\beta}$-glucosidase was increased at the heading stage and decreased thereafter, and the activity of phosphatase tended to decrease in the submerged soil when rice plants were not cultured and to increase in the submerged soil when rice plants were cultured. Protease tended to increase in the heading stage and increase in the tillering stage and heading stage with the application of barley straw. The change of sugar was decreased and hexose was increased in the tillering stage with the application of barley straw.

Lichens, a symbiotic organism of fungi and algae, cause serious damage to national heritages of stone master piece and costly trees for gardening. The present study was conducted to screen effective fungicides against lichen-forming fungi to control the biological agents deteriorating stone heritages and trees. Five commercial fungicides (Fenarimol EC, Etridiazole EC, Iminoctadinetriacetate SL, Difenoconazole+lminocatadinetriacetate ME and Difenoconazole+Azoxystrobin SC) were tested against the lichen-forming fungi (LFF) isolated from seven saxicolous (Caloplaca sp., Ramalina sp., Xanthoparmelia sp., and Xanthoria sp.,) or corticolous (Parmelia sp.,) lichen species. Preliminary screening test showed that no LFF could grow on the MY (malt-yeast extract) agar medium amended with the recommended concentrations of each fungicide. Further screening was conducted at 1%, 10% and 20% of the recommended concentrations of the fungicides. After 7 week incubation at $15^{\circ}C$ in the dark, Difenoconazole+Iminocatadinetriacetate ME and Difenoconazole+Azoxystrobin SC completely inhibited the fungal growth of all the tested LFF, even at 1% of the concentration. Two fungicides of Fenarimol EC and Iminoctadinetriacetate SL exhibited a moderate inhibition activity at the lower concentrations. Etridiazole EC was less effective in the fungal growth inhibition than the other four fungicides. The results suggested that lichens colonizing on precious stone heritages and trees can be eradicated by applying Difenoconazole+Iminocatadinetriacetate ME and Difenoconazole+Azoxystrobin SC even 1% of the recommended concentrations. Selected fungicide application at such a low concentration will facilitate the chemical use to prevent and preserve stone heritages from biological deterioration induced by lichens and the allied microbes.
Turfgrass provides various beneficial effects to our societies such as recreation, aesthetic components, and other public service. Diseases in turfgrass is the major issue, which cause quality problems in golf courses, playgrounds, parks and cultivation areas, and tremendous cost is required to prevent the diseases. Research activity and investigation for turfgrass disease remain to be further attributed when compared to other crops in Korea. In this study, we present previously reported turfgrass diseases researches, especially caused by fungal pathogens, and review the history of turfgrass research activity in Korea to contribute future turfgrass research direction. Research papers were searched and analyzed using Korea Educational and Research Information Service (www.riss.kr). More than eighty papers presented turfgrass diseases and among the papers, 50% were published in Korean Journal of Turfgrass. Half of the papers reported turfgrass diseases control. Research articles about large patch disease were the majority (36%), followed dollar spot (18%), Pythium blight (10%) and Typhular blight (8%). Number of the first disease reports in Korea were total fifteen. Total 542 fungicides have been registered in Korea to prevent turfgrass diseases and most of the fungicides were for brown patch, rust, yellow patch, dollar spot, snow mold, summer patch, anthracnose, Pythium blight, powdery mildew and algae. And we will also need to conduct ecological studies on turf diseases and to develop control methods with improved efficacy and environmentally-friend sound. Researches on epidemiology of turfgrass diseases which deals with the incidence, distribution, and interactions with other factors will be also greatly favored for precise control prescription, timing of control and use of less pesticides.

A simple extraction method was applied to control four selected cyanobacteria, solitary (SMA) and colonial Microcystis aeruginosa (CMA), and green algae, Scenedesmus quadricauda and Chlorella vulgaris using a domestic plant and mineral. Three kinds of concentrations (1, 5, and 10 mg $L^{-1}$) of three fresh plants Camellia sinensis, Quercus acutissima, and Castanea crenata, three minerals loess, quartz porphyry, and natural zeolite, and plant-mineral composite, totally seven materials were prepared with the simple extraction processes: drying and grinding of material, water-extraction by high temperature-sonication and filtering. Cyanobacteria SMA and CMA (over 60% of control) were effectively inhibited with the low concentration (1 mg $L^{-1}$) of plants Q. acutissima and C. crenata and natural zeolite, while green alga S. quadricauda (below 50% of control) also retarded in growth. Low concentrations (1 mg $L^{-1}$) of C. sinensis effectively increased the growth of C. vulgaris, while loess also induced the algal growth of S. quadricauda. Therefore, our results indicate that crude extract of domestic plants, Q. acutissima and C. crenata can be also useful to control the cyanobacterial bloom in eutrophic lake, whereas C. sinensis and loess may be a good growth factor or useful media for the algal mass culture.
