  • This study is a descriptive study to investigate the association between current smoking, high-risk alcohol drinking and depressive symptoms among female college students. The participants were 515 female college students, and data collection was conducted through online and mobile surveys from September 2020 to August 2021. Multivariable ordinal logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the association between current smoking, high-risk drinking and depressive symptoms, and as a result, current smoking was significantly associated with depressive symptoms (OR= 2.524, 95% CI=1.051-6.061). Therefore, in order to improve the depressive symptoms of female college students, adequate support such as reducing the smoking rate through active smoking cessation education and preparing various on-campus programs should be provided.

  • In order to elucidate the effects of a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet on serum lipid levels, 91 male collegians residing in the Seoul area were recruited. The vegetarians did not smoke tobacco nor drink alcohol. Their anthropometric measurements, dietary intakes, and blood lipid concentrations were compared to age-matched omnivorous controls. The subjects were divided into four groups. The four groups were: 1) NSNDV (n=25): Non Smoking Non Drinking Vegetarians, 2) NSNDO (n=10): Non Smoking Non Drinking Omnivores, 3) SDO (n=37): Smoking, Drinking Omnivores, 4) SDM (n=11): Smoking Drinking Meat-eaters. Total serum cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and hematocrit were analyzed. The results were as follows: Weight (p<0.05) and BMI (p<0.01) were significantly higher in SDM than NSNDV. Dietary protein (p<0.01), iron (p<0.05) and dietary lipids (p<0.01) from animals in NSNDV were significantly lower than the results in the SDM. Interestingly enough, we noted no significant differences between the four groups in terms of average total dietary protein, dietary lipids and dietary iron, total serum cholesterol, or HDL-cholesterol. Dietary fiber intake was significantly higher in NSNDV than in SDM (p<0.05). Weight, BMI, and total cholesterol were significantly positively correlated with animal protein (p<0.05) and animal lipid (p<0.01) intake. These results showed that vegetarian collegians who haven't smoked tobacco nor drunk alcohol evidenced lower body weight, BMI, and dietary animal lipid intake, but higher dietary fiber intake, than the other three groups. Additionally, intake of animal protein (p<0.001) and intake of animal lipids (p<0.001) were significantly positively correlated with body weight, BMI, and total serum cholesterol in male collegians.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to determine the effect of drinking prevention program on the levels of drinking related knowledge, attitude, drinking refusal self-efficacy and behavior of vocational high school girls. Methods: Pre-post test design. The subject was used for a group of high school girls. The data were collected on May and September, 2006 and June, 2007 and analyzed using paired t-test. Results: The drinking-related knowledge score after one year was significantly higher than that of pretest (t=-14.02, p=.001) and the drinking-related attitude score was lower (t=2.85, p=.006). The drinking refusal self-efficacy and the drinking behavior measured as number of drinking events, amount of alcohol and number of heavy drinking events were not significantly different between pretest and post test after one year. Conclusion: Drinking prevention program should be given to increase the drinking refusal self-efficacy and decrease or prevent the drinking behavior of high school girls every semester at least.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of social support, loneliness, alcohol use and perceived health status in college students and to explore the relationships between the variables. The convenience sample consisted of 473 students attending a college located at Chonnam province. Data were collected by a structured questionnaire which included the PRO85-partⅡ Social Support Scale, revised UCLA Loneliness Scale, Alcohol frequency, Perceived Health Status Scale from June 10 to 25, 2001. And data were analyzed by SPSS/PC+program including descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation Coefficients. The results are summarized as follows; 1. The mean scores of social support, loneliness and perceived health status were 3.01($SD={\pm}0.31$), 2.08($SD={\pm}0.34$), 1.64($SD={\pm}0.65$) respectively. 2. Students in use of alcohol mostly reported that they had started a drinking in the period of high school(35.7%), motivated with friendship(32.6%) and drank with their friends(56.9%) in drinking frequency of 2-3times per a month(49.6%). 3. The students who have friend of the opposite sex were significantly more likely to have higher than the students having no friend of the opposite sex in scores of social support. 4. The scores of loneliness were significantly lower in female students than male students, in students with friend of the opposite sex than with no friend of the opposite sex. 5. There were significant negative correlations between social support and loneliness(r=-5.25, p<.000), and between loneliness and perceived health status(r=-0.93, p<.05), while there was a significant positive correlation between social support and perceived health status(r=1.01, p<.05). The findings suggested that supportive social support, especially lowering loneliness, would be a powerful nursing intervention in maintaining good health of college students. And, more variables affecting health status in college students will be identified with further research.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of smoking on dietary behavior and nutrient intake among the male college students. The subjects were divided into three groups; non smoker(n=84), moderate smoker(n=68), and heavy smoker(n=89) according to duration and degree of smoking. And they were asked for general characteristics, life style, eating pattern, food frequency, and nutrient intake using questionnaire and 24-hr recall method. The mean age, height, weight, and BMI of the subjects were 26.2$\pm$6.2 years, 173.3$\pm$5.3㎝, 66.5$\pm$9.3㎏, and 22.1$\pm$2.7㎏/$m^2$, respectively. The type of residence and frequency of alcohol drinking were significantly different among three groups; the frequency of self-boarding and alcohol drinking in moderate smoker and heavy smoker was higher than those in non smoker. Comparing with non smoker, the frequency of skipping meals, especially breakfast and supper, was significantly high in moderate smoker and heavy smoker. The most common reason why heavy smoker skipped meals was ‘eating habit’, while it was ‘lack of time’ in non smoker. The results showed that the heavy smoker tended to drink coffee more often compared to the other two groups. There were no significant differences in nutrient intakes among three groups. In conclusion, heavy smoking students have unhealthy dietary behaviors in terms of high frequency of alcohol drinking, habit of skipping meals and frequent coffee drinking showing a strong need of proper education on smoking withdrawal and meal practice for them.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of general, health, and alcohol-related characteristics on blood pressure and stress according to the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). Methods: This was a descriptive study. From participants in the 2013 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 319 participants who responded to the survey when they were attending college or university were selected. Data were analyzed using the SPSS Win 23.0 program for composite sample data reflecting the composite design elements of stratification, colonization, and weighting. Results: Mean age of onset of alcohol drinking was $17.91{\pm}0.16$ years, the average AUDIT score was $7.56{\pm}0.41$, and 25 (9.1%) participants fell into the high-risk drinking group. In the high-risk AUDIT group, systolic blood pressure was influenced by age, gender, institution, health status, body mass index, and suicidal ideation, and the explanatory power of the model ($R^2$) was 75.0%. For diastolic blood pressure, institution and health status were the influential factors, and $R^2$ was 66.2%. Predictors of stress were health status, depression, and the age of onset of drinking, and $R^2$ was 57.2%. Conclusion: It was confirmed that the explanatory power of the variables in models of systolic and diastolic blood pressure and stress is greater in those with higher scores on AUDIT.
