This study attempted to investigate the factors influencing alcohol drinking habit of college students in Korea. To find how many students are alcohol dependents and what factors are related to problem drinking habit, the current study estimated problem drinkers and analyzed the relationship of problem drinking and various factors. In 2000, 736 students reported the questionnaires. Estimated rates of problem drinkers standardized by age were 0.7% of male and 0.5% of female students by NAST, amounting 9,300 college students. Age of initiation of alcohol drinking, alcohol or drug use problems of parents or mends, psychological factors, emotional factors, and two of MMPI scales were significantly different between moderate drinkers and alcohol dependents. The moderate and problem drinkers were significantly different in Mf and Pa average scores. However, economic factors were not significantly different between the moderate drinkers and alcohol dependents. Based on the results, this study suggested that further multivariate studies with large sample need be conducted to investigate the relationship between alcohol dependency and its factors.
Alcohol has been used as sedatives historically. The effect of alcohol on sleep is different according to its dose, timing of ingestion, and drinking frequency. Sleep problems may play a role in the development and course of alcohol-related disorders. Insomnia in alcohol-dependent patients is common and early treatment of insomnia may reduce the rate of relapse. Sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, periodic limbs movement disorder, and altered circadian rhythm may be more frequent in this patients. Management of sleep and alcohol problems is important in treating alcohol-related disorder and sleep disorders, respectively.

The synthesis alcohol-oxidase[EC 1.1.3.13] was investigated in the yeasts, Candida boidinii CBS 8106 and C. boidinii CBS 2428, during growth on different carbon sources. Alcohol-oxidase was undetectable in all strains submitted to the test in the mineral salts medium containing 1.0% glucose, but its production was rapidly increased when the carbon source was changed glucose to 1.0% methanol after 24hrs of incubation. When cells were grown on the various carbon sources (glucose, xylose, lactose, glycerol, galactose, saccharose, sorbose, lactic acid or acetic acid), the alcohol-oxidase activity was undetected. These carbon sources together with methanol yielded far better synthesis of alcohol-oxidase than in the case of carbon sources alone. Alcohol-oxidase was active towards alcohol of shorter alkyl-chain length than C5 and unsaturated alcohols. Its affinity for these alcohols decreased with the increasing length of the alkyl-chain. The apparent Km values for the methanol of Candida boidinii CBS 8106 and C. boidinii CBS 2428 were 1.96 and 1.21, respestively.

The properties of the alcohol-oxidase from yeasts assimilating of methanol(Hansenula polymorpha CBS 4732, Pichia pastoris CBS 2612 and Candida boidinii CBS 8106) as free(cellules, purified enzymes) and immobilized forms(immobilized cellules, immobilized enzymes) were investigated. Immobilization enhanced the activity and stability of alcohol-oxidase to a certain degree. The optimum temperature of the immobilized alcohol-oxidase was lower than those of the free forms. The pH / activi쇼 profiles of alcohol-oxidase did not change by immobilization, but changed by the microorganisms. When the immobilized cellules were stocked at 4$^{\circ}C$ in 10mM potassium phosphate buffer(pH 7.5 or 8.0), alcohol-oxidase was more stable than those were stocked in potassium phosphate buffer containing 0.65M sucrose. The immobilization modifies the conditions of oxidation on the various substrates. alcohol-oxidase in immobilized forms showed some with higher Km value for methanol than that in free ones.
This paper determines if mandated alcohol health information labelling could be an obstacle to international trade by discussing international trade rules affecting member nations. WTO members could use alcohol labelling rules to protect human health, reduce the consumption of alcohol and provide product information. When a member uses alcohol labelling as a technical regulation or standard, it should comply with TBT Articles 2.2 and 2.4. If a member uses some specific warning messages for their objectives, it should be considered the contribution of the measure, trade restrictiveness, and alternatives. If WTO members want to employ their own alcohol labelling schemes for addressing carcinogenicity, intoxicating effects, dependence potential, effects on children, adolescents and pregnancy, it could be a technical barrier and also create adverse effects on international trade. Therefore, the harms of alcohol are supported by scientific evidence, and for this reason, the international harmonization for alcohol labelling should be discussed openly to prevent negative effects on trade.
This study was carried to investigate the effects of alcohol intake on the dietary behaviors and nutrient intakes of students in university and was observed characteristics of alcohol drinking, smoking, dietary behaviors, and nutrient intakes of students. The mean of alcohol consumption was 25.7$\pm$21.7g/day and 47.5$\pm$25.8g/day, most high of high alcohol group in the male student than other groups. Smoking were high by increasing of alcohol intake. Most students had dietary problems as skipping meals, eating snack after dinner, high frequency of eating fast and instant food, and eating meals at watching TV or video. The dietary behavior problems in the high alcohol groups showed higher in the female students than the male students. Nutritional knowledge scores was no significantly different by sex and alcohol intake. The intakes of calorie, protein, phosphorous, iron, and niacin in the male students was significantly higher than those of female students. Except for calcium, vitamin $B_2$ and vitamin C, nutrients were satisfied to the level of Recommended Dietary Allowances(RDA). Nutrient intakes was not affected by alcohol intake. But intakes of calorie, protein, phosphorous, and iron were affected by sex and vitamin C intake was affected by sex and alcohol intake.
This study investigated the effect of the addition of alcohol on the quality change of Chungkukjang during the aging, The Cung-kuk-jang was made by the degree of 3, 5, 10%, respectively, and determined NH2-N, NH3-N, total acidity, cell numbers, lactate, succinate and phenolic acid to measure the change of flavor component in the aging of 2$0^{\circ}C$. 1. In the treatment groups of different amount of alcohol and salt added and aging period of Chung-kuk-hang, NH2-N was more decreased with more addition of alcohol and salt in the 3-and 10-day of aging. NH3-N was increased gradually in the addition of up to 2.0% alcohol and then decreased in the 3-and 10-day of aging. 2. In the treatment groups of different amount of alcohol added and aging period Chung-kuk-hang, the total acidity was more decreased with more addition of alcohol and higher degree of salt. Cell number was decreased rapidly with the addition of 1.0% alcohol in the 3-day and then decreased relatively and in the 10-day of aging, and it was increased with the addition of alcohol 3. With the addition of alcohol and the different growing temperature, the content of phenolic acid was more browning changed at 3$0^{\circ}C$ than that of at 2$0^{\circ}C$ and the phenol content of each group was decreased with increasing the addition amount of alcohol. Thus, the more addition of alcohol amount would the more extend the period of Chung-kuk-hang aging.
Objectives: This study investigated the effect of SM-2015 on blood alcohol clearance and hangover. We undertook this study to test whether SM-2015 is effective in decreasing blood alcohol concentration and preventing the symptoms of alcohol-induced hangover. Methods: Twenty healthy volunteers participated in this randomized crossover study. All participants were classified between an SM-2015 intake group (test group) and a non-intake group (control group). The primary outcome measure was the difference in blood alcohol concentration and hangover severity scores between the test and control groups. The secondary outcome measure was the difference in a liver function test (LFT) between the test and control groups. Results: After alcohol exposure, the sensitivity scores of blood alcohol concentration and hangover symptoms (sleepiness, dizziness, nausea, weakness, stomach pain, diarrhea, and concentration disorder) were significantly decreased in the SM-2015 intake group compared with the non-intake group. There were no differences in the LFT results between the SM-2015 intake group and the non-intake group. Conclusions: SM-2015 is effective in decreasing blood alcohol concentration and preventing the symptoms of alcohol-induced hangover. Larger studies are required to confirm these findings.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess alcohol and caffeine intake and identify the impact of alcohol and caffeine intake on body mass index, alcohol use disorder, and quality of sleep among university students. Methods: This study design was accomplished with a cross sectional survey and conducted from May to June 2014. One hundred and twenty-four freshmen of E university in S city, Korea were selected and evaluated by self-administered questionnaires. Alcohol and caffeine intake were measured by self-reported recall. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and multiple linear regression. Results: The average amount of alcohol intake was $175.02{\pm}219.97g$ and the proportion of freshmen who took in more than 40 g per day of alcohol was 75%. The average amount of caffeine intake was $116.79{\pm}111.14mg$. Factors influencing alcohol use disorder were dwelling type (t=2.25, p=.027) and alcohol intake (t=8.11, p<.001). And, the factor influencing quality of sleep was caffeine intake (t=3.88, p<.001). Conclusion: In order to reduce the harmful drinking of university students, preventive activities for freshmen are required and efforts on the part of the school needed.
To consider potentially new sources which have hypoglycemic effect and accelerating alcohol detoxification, this study was designed to investigate the effect of Crataegus fructus and Morns alba L. in alcohol-treated rats. I compared the body weight, glucose, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) of rats administered both alcohol and extract of experimental plants to rats treated with alcohol alone. Administration of extracts of C. fructus and M alba, respectively, resulted in a significant reduction in the blood glucose level and the activities of ADH of liver compared to the control rats, and administration of extract of M. alba showed significantly lower on bodyweight gain in the rats than in other treated rats. In contrast, the activities of ALDH of liver were increased. The activities of AST and ALT between the only alcohol-treated rats and the alcohol and experimental plants-treated rats were no significant difference. The results suggest that C. fructus and M alba have a hypoglycemic effect, and reduce liver damage by accelerating acetaldehyde metabolism in alcoholic rats, so the combined effect of C. fructus and M alba may be considered as an alternative remedy for hangovers, alcohol-induced overweight and alcohol-induced diabetes.
