Effects of Fruit Extract Drink on Alcohol Metabolic Enzymes in Ethanol-treated Rats

  • Alcoholism is a significant global health problem. Alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase play important roles in the metabolism of alcohol and aldehyde. In this study, we aimed to investigate the eliminatory effects of a fruit extract drink on alcohol metabolism in drunken Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Male SD rats were given a fruit extract drink or a commercial product (10 mL/kg) 30 min prior to 40% (5 g/kg) ethanol ingestion. To assay the effect of the fruit extract drink on blood ethanol concentration, blood samples were taken from the saphenous vein at 3 and 5 h after ethanol ingestion. The blood concentrations of alcohol, alcohol dehydrogenase, and aldehyde dehydrogenase were significantly lower in the fruit extract drink group than in the control group, in a time-dependent manner. However, the alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase activities of all experimental groups were unaltered compared to those of the control group. These results suggested that fruit extract drink intake can have a positive effect on the reduction of alcohol, alcohol dehydrogenase, and aldehyde dehydrogenase concentrations in the blood and may alleviate acute ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity by altering alcohol metabolic enzyme activities.

Analysis of Alcohol Drinking Cessation Programs on Worksites (사업장 절주 프로그램 분석 - 사업장 건강증진운동 우수사례집을 중심으로 -)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze alcohol drinking cessation programs to promote health status for workers on worksites. Method: Data were collected from the excellent 10 cases which were selected from "competition of health promotion programs on worksites" from 1999 to 2007 held by Korean Occupational Safety and Health Agency. Result: There were three main alcohol drinking cessation programs on worksites: health education, individual health services to change life style, and formation of supportive environments. Health education and individual health services were intervened in nine worksites. Building supportive environments for alcohol drinking cessation were implemented in 10 worksites. The most popular indicators for program evaluation were health diagnosis and percentage of alcohol drinkers. Problems to implement alcohol drinking cessation programs were low voluntary participation of labors, difficulty of applying programs to labors that had a shift duty, and complexity to evaluate the effectiveness of alcohol cessation programs due to deficits of standard instruments. Conclusion: These findings suggest that many worksites did not have alcohol drinking cessation programs and also these programs were not implemented effectively. Thus, employers, professionals and policy makers of occupational health should develop and support effective alcohol drinking cessation programs for l workers on worksites.

Risk factors of alcohol use disorder in Korean adults based on the decision tree analysis (의사결정나무분석을 이용한 성인의 알코올사용장애 위험요인)

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify risk factors of alcohol use disorder among Korean adults. Methods: Cross-sectional exploratory study based on data collected from Data from the 6th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2015 were performed in this study. There were 3,248 participants who were 2,558 normal drinkers while 690 had alcohol use disorder. Decision tree analysis were used to exam socio-demographic and health-related factors to predict alcohol use disorder. Results: As a result of decision tree analysis, the predictive model for factors related to alcohol use disorder in Korean adults presented with 8 pathways. The significant predictors of alcohol use disorder were age, gender, smoking, marital status, and house income. Male smokers whose household income is 'high' or 'low' are most vulnerable to alcohol use disorders. Conclusions: This study indicates that need to consider health behavior and house income when we practice prevention policies and health education of alcohol use disorder.

The Relationship between Alcohol Consumption and Diabetes in Korean Adults

  • The prevalence of diabetes continues to increase worldwide, and the problem is also important in Korea, and about 14% of Korean adults have diabetes. Alcohol consumptions are increasing rapidly around the world and are recognized as one of the major problems in the country. Alcohol consumption is an environmental factor previously known to be associated with the risk of developing diabetes. Alcohol consumption can cause problems in the endocrine system and gastrointestinal function, and oxidative stress of acetaldehyde, an ethanol metabolite, can damage beta cells in the pancreas. In the present study, we found the effect of alcohol intake on fasting blood sugar and the difference between men and women in the risk of diabetes according to alcohol intake. In men, the high-drinking group had a higher risk of diabetes than the non-drinking group (OR, 1.41; P=0.058). In women, the Moderate-drinking group had a lower risk of diabetes compared to the non-drinking group (OR, 0.42; P=0.039). The high-drinking group had a higher risk of diabetes than the non-drinking group (OR, 2.97; P=0.034). The group that consumed more than the WHO's daily alcohol intake risk standard tended to have a higher risk of diabetes than the group that did not (OR, 5.48; P=0.001). This study suggest that moderate alcohol consumption reduce the risk of developing diabetes, and high alcohol consumption increase the risk of developing diabetes.

Study on engine performance and emissions using alcohol-gasoline blend as a fuel (Alcohol-gasoline 기관의 성능과 배출물에 관한 연구)

  • Experiments about engine performance using alcohol-gasoline blend as a fuel are studied. A conventional 4cycle 4cylinder gasoline engine is used. Measurements on torque, output, specific fuel consumption, and emissions are made over ignition timing and mixing ratio. Up to vol. 15% of alcohol, torque and output using alcohol-gasoline blend are almost same with using only gasoline, and specific fuel consumption is improved about 7%. In emissions alcohol-gasoline blend is more effective than gasoline.

Studies on the Toxicity of Alcohol in the Developing Chick Embryo

  • We have examined alcohol-induced malformation of chick embryo. Alcohol was considered to induce the malformation of developing embryo and to have bad effects on embryonic stage. We injected alcohol into air sac on day 4 of incubation. Ten % alcohol-treated group showed a little decrease on their body length compared to the untreated group and distilled water-treated group. Thirty % alcohol-treated group showed significant decrease on their body length compared to the untreated group and 10% ethanol treated group. In addition, we have observed malformation of eyeballs and bills. These results indicate that alcohol affects chicken developments and brings on malformation of developing stage.

Effect of Acanthopanax senticosus Extracts on Alcohol Degradation and Anti-Inflammatory Activity in Mice (가시오가피 추출물의 알코올 분해 및 항염증 효과)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Acanthopanax senticosus extracts(ASE) on alcohol administered mice. The administration of Acanthopanax senticosus extracts(60 mg/kg) had beneficial actions toward alcohol degradation in acute alcohol treated mice. In the acute alcohol degradation experiment, serum alcohol concentration were lower 3 and 6 hours after taking ethanol(5 g/kg) in ASE treated mice. The oral administration of ASE showed decreased gastric mucous membrane damage produced in ethanol treated mice. In addition, intraperitoneal(i.p.) administration of ASE showed antiinflammatory effects in inhibition tests of vascular permeability produced by acetic acid. ASE also reduced concentrations of nitric oxide(NO), tumor necrosis alpha(TNF)-${\alpha}$ and interleukin(IL)-6 in macrophages that were activated by LPS. These results demonstrate that Acanthopanax senticosus extracts possesses the potential to stimulate alcohol degradation and inhibit inflammatory effects in mice.

Allyl Alcohol Found in Heated Garlic is a Potent Selective Inhibitor of Yeasts

  • Allyl alcohol (2-propen-l-ol), found in considerable amounts in heated garlic, was able to discriminate yeasts from bacteria and was approximately three orders of magnitude more inhibitory towards yeasts than bacteria. The average minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of allyl alcohol for bacteria and yeasts was 5.0% and 0.0056%, respectively. The unsaturated primary alcohols, including allyl alcohol and 2-buten-l-ol, seemed to work differently from all the other saturated alcohols and unsaturated secondary alcohols in inhibiting various yeasts. An alcohol dehydrogenase-negative (ADH$^-$) strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae was as resistant to allyl alcohol as various bacteria, exhibiting an MIC of 5.0%. The unsaturated primary alcohols were apparently oxidized into the corresponding unsaturated aldehydes before they inhibited the yeasts.

The Effect of Splanchnic Nerve Block According to Concentration of Alcohol (Alcohol농도에 따른 내장신경 차단효과)

  • Three hundred and eighty-nine cases of splanchnic nerve block were retrospectively divided into 3 groups according to the change of alcohol concentration. In Group 1 (26 cases), about 7 ml of 1% lidocaine was used bilaterally as test block followed by an injection of 20 ml of 50% alcohol bilaterally. In Group 2 (286 cases) the same test block was followed by the same amount of pure and 50% alcohol. In Group 3 (77 cases) and used 30 ml of 75% alcohol bilaterally. The overall success rate of the first alcohol block in group 1, 2 and 3 was 73.1%, 92.0% and 84.4% respectively. From the above results, that splanchnic nerve block by pure alcohol was the most reliable method for upper abdominal cancer patients.

  • Upon feeding dried Ginseng to rats of either low-protein or high protein diet ethanol was administered intraperitoneally and disappearance rate blood alcohol was enzymatically measure. In terms of residual blood alcohol after a time lapse of 3.5 hours between intraperitonial administration and blood withdrawal neither ginseng nor ginseng plus 40% casein did improve the rate, of alcohol clearance but sexual difference was clearly demonstrated in favor of female rats. In the case of blood withdrawn only 2 hours after intraperitoneal injection of alcohol, the tendency of female superiority in alcohol clearance rate is demonstrated when a comparison is made among the groups fed with ginseng and this was particularly true is groups of rats fed with basal diet plus 1 percent ginseng residual blood ethanol being 15.4 mg/ml vs. 8.8 mg/ml. Liver homogenate alcohol dehydrogenase activity measured in terms of residual ethanol content after in vitro reaction on which a known amount of alcohol was added clearly demonstrated a male superiority in alcohol clearance.
