  • The objective of this study is to remove arsenate from artificially contaminated wastewater using CaAl-ettringite and CaAl-monosulfate which were synthesized in laboratory. The study was carried on the basis of solidification/stabilization of waste using cement. Monosulfate and ettringite are constituents of cement paste. The CaAl-ettringite has a chemical formula of $Ca_6Al_2O_6(SO_4)_3{\cdot}32H_2O$ and has a needle like morphology. Whereas CaAl-monosulfate $Ca_4Al_2O_6(SO_4){\cdot}12H_2O$ has layered double hydroxide structure (LDH) in which the mainlayer consists of Ca and Al and S as interlayer. Ettringite and monosulfate were synthesized by reaction of tricalcium aluminate and gypsum and hydrating this mixture at elevated temperature. The synthesized mineral were characterized by PXRD and FESEM to ensure purity. It was found that concentrations of As(V) in contaminated water were reduced from initial concentration of 1.335 mmol/L to 0.054 mmol/L and 0.300 mmol/L by CaAl-monosulfate and CaAl-ettringite respectively. The post experimental results of PXRD and FESEM analysis indicate that arsenate removal was by ion exchange.

  • Three acrylic copolymers containing tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (AlQ3) pendant group (25 wt%), acrylateco-HEMA-$AlQ_3$ (25 wt%), were successfully synthesized by free radical polymerization from acrylates [methyl methacrylate (MMA), acrylonitrile (AN) or 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA)] with HEMA functionalized with AlQ3 pendant groups (HEMA-p-$AlQ_3$). The glass transition temperatures ($T_g$) of MMA-co-HEMA-p-$AlQ_3$ (copolymer 1), AN-co-HEMA-p-$AlQ_3$ (copolymer 2) and HEMA-co-HEMA-p-$AlQ_3$ (copolymer 3) were found to be 158, 150 and $126^{\circ}C$, respectively. They have good thermal stability: a very desirable feature for the stability of OLEDs. Their solubility, thermal properties, UV-visible absorption and photoluminescence behaviors were investigated. They were found to be soluble in various organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), dimethylformamide (DMF), toluene and chloroform. It was also found that the UV-visible absorption and photoluminescence behaviors of these copolymers were similar to those of pristine $AlQ_3$. Green organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have also been fabricated using these copolymers as light emission/electron transport components obtained easily by spin coating, and their current density voltage (J-V) curves were compared. The OLED device of the copolymer 3 had the lowest turn-on voltage of about 2 V compared to other copolymer types devices.

  • Aluminum oxynitride spinel (ALON) was synthesized by the direct melt nitridation (DMN) process using aluminum metal and aluminium oxide. The amount of ALON increased with increasing the reaction sintering temperature. The specimen containing up to 10 wt% Al showed ALON phase only when heat-treated beyond $1750^{\circ}C$. Whereas the specimen composed of more than 12 wt% Al showed unreacted AlN phase. Bulk density of reaction-sintered specimen was increased with increasing sintering temperature, except the speimen containing unreacted AlN where the density slightly decreased when heat-treated beyond $1750^{\circ}C$, Transgranular fracture mode was observed predominantly in the specimen with higher Al content.
