Fabrication Process and Characterization of High Thermal Conductivity-Low CTE SiCp/Al Metal Matrix Composites by Pressure Infiltration Casting Process (가압함침법에 의한 고열전도도-저열팽창계수 SiCp/Al 금속복합재료의 제조공정 및 특성평가)

  • The fabrication process and thermal properties of 50~71vol% SiCp/Al metal matrix composites (MMCs) were investigated. The 50~71vol% SiCp/Al MMCs fabricated by pressure infiltration casting process showed that thermal conductivities were 118~170W/mK and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) were 9.5~$6.5{\times}10^{-6}/K$. Specially, the thermal conductivity and CTE of 71vol%SiCp/Al MMCs were 115~156W/mK and 6~$7{\times}10^{-6}/K$. respectively, which showed a improved themal properties than the conventional electronic packaging materials such as ceramics and metals.

  • Al$_2$O$_3$-5 vol% SiC 나노복합재료의 sinter plus HIP에 의한 치밀화시 일어나는 기공의 변화에 초점을 두어 치밀화 거동을 관찰하였다. $Al_2$O$_3$-SiC 시편은 질소분위기 중의 상압소결과 이후의 열간정수압소결(HIP)에 의해 완전치밀화가 이루어졌다. 155$0^{\circ}C$의 상압소결에 의해서는 90%의 비교적 낮은 상대밀도가 얻어졌으나, 기공의 폐기공화로 이후의 열간정수압소결(HIP)에 의해 99.6%의 완전치밀화가 가능하였다. 상압소결한 시편을 X-선 회절기와 주사전자현미경(SEM)으로 관찰한 결과, 선택적으로 시편 표면부에서만 SiAl$_{6}$O$_2$N$_{6}$과 AlN 등으로 이루어진 치밀화된 반응층을 확인할 수 있었으며, 이러한 표면 반응층이 비교적 낮은 상대밀도의 시편내의 모든 기공을 폐기공화하는 효과를 주는 것을 알 수 있었다.

  • The powder metallurgy (P/M) processed 2009 and 2124 Al composites reinforced with SiC particulates were studied by focusing on the effect of consolidation temperature on the microstructural and mechanical Properties. The mechanical properties such as tensile properties and microhardness of the second phases were analysed in relation to the microstructures observed by a SEM and an optical microscope. The in situ fracture process study using SEM showed that the grain refinement and the removal of manganese-containing particles often observed in the 2124 Al-${SiC}_{p}$ composites were important for the improvement of the mechanical properties. This study offers an optimum consolidation temperature for the control of the manganese-containing particles in the 2124 Al-${SiC}_{p}$ composites that yields mechanical properties higher than those of the 2009 Al-${SiC}_{p}$ composites.

  • Changes in phase and microstructure were investigated in the SiC-AlN ceramics prepared by pressureless sintering using yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) as a sintering aid at 200$0^{\circ}C$ and 210$0^{\circ}C$. The SiC/AlN ratio made a remarkable difference in densification, phase relations and the morphology of grains. In the AlN-rich composition, major phase was 2H and microstructure was composed of the densified equiaxed grains irrespective of the sintering temperatures. While those sintered at 200$0^{\circ}C$ were porous with major phase being 3C, the rod-like and the equiaxed grains were coexisted when sintered at 210$0^{\circ}C$ in the SiC-rich composition.

  • Hot precision forging with a back pressure was investigated for manufacturing of compressor parts made of Al-Si alloy. Disk-shaped blank made of Al-Si alloy was hot forged, and ribs were formed by loading back pressure on their top. The influence of the back pressure and die temperature on forgeability and properties of parts made of Al-Si alloy were examined. Using the F.E.M. simulation, we found the optimum vallue of back-pressure. The prototypes of scroll parts were forged into the near-net shape and satisfied the required properties.

  • The fabrication process and analysis of thermal properties of 50~76vo1% SiCp/Al metal matrix composites(MMCs) for heatsink materials in electronic packaging were investigated. The 50~76vo1% SiCp/Al MMCs fabricated by pressure infiltration casting process showed that thermal conductivities were 85~170W/mK and coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) were ranged 10~6ppm1k. Specially, the thermal conductivity and CTE of 71vo1%SiCp/Al MMCs were ranged 115~156W/mK and 6~7ppm/K. respectively, which showed a improved thermal properties than the conventional electronic packaging materials such as ceramics and metals.

  • In the present study an attempt was made to synthesize the $Al_2O_3$.$2SiO_2$ glass in which atomic ratio is Al:Si=1:1 by sol-gel process. And at such a low temperature as 55$0^{\circ}C$ clear amorphous gel derived glass with Si-O-Al bonding was obtained. $Si(OC_2H_5)_4$ and $Al(NO_3)_3$.$9H_2O$ were used as the precursor and among the mutual solvents only n-butanol gave good results for the synthesis of the gel derived glass. Partial hydrolysis of TEOS with one-fold mol of $H_2O$ prior to the reaction with aluminum nitrate gave the better results., Total oxide content to the total reactants by weight was affective to the results.

  • Aluminum nitride (AlN) thin films were deposited on Polycrystalline (poly) 3C-SiC buffer layers using pulsed reactive magnetron sputtering. Characteristics of AlN films were investigated experimentally by means of FE-SEM, X-ray diffraction, and FT-IR, respectively. As a result, highly (002) oriented AlN thin films with almost free residual stress were achieved using 3C-SiC buffer layers. Therefore, AlN thin films grown on 3C-SiC buffer layers can be used for various piezoelectric fields and M/NEMS applications.

Wear Behavior of Al-based Composites according to Reinforcements Volume Fraction (강화상의 분율에 따른 알루미늄기 복합재료의 마모거동)

  • SiC particulate reinforced Al matrix composites with different SiC volume fractions were fabricated by thermal spray process. And the dry sliding wear test were performed on these composites using the applied load of 10 N, rotational speed of 30 rpm, radius of rotation 15 mm. Wear tracks on the Al/SiC composites were investigated using scanning electron microscope(SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). It was observed that wear behavior of Al/SiC composites and formation of MML was changed dramatically according to reinforcement volume fraction.

Preparation of AlN/SiC Whisker Composite by Reaction Sintering Process (반응소결법에 의한 AlN/SiC 휘스커 복합체의 제조)

  • Al powder, AlN powder, SiC whisker and sintering aids were wet-mixed, and then the specimens prepared with mixed powder were reacted by nitridation at 600∼1400$^{\circ}C$ for 5 hrs. It was cleat that the higher nitridation and the more SiC whisker content were, the better bending strength was. The specimen of Al50/AlN50 reacted at 1400$^{\circ}C$ for 5hrs had the nitridation percent of 97%, the shrinkage under 2%, and the relative density of 78%. And the maximum bending strength of reaction-bonded specimen was 250 MPa. The specimens completely nitrided were post-sintered at 1700, 1800 and 1900$^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs. The post-sintered body had the shrinkage under 6% and the relative density of 86%. Because of the formation of solid solution between AlN and SiC whisker over 1800$^{\circ}C$, the promotion of mechanical properties according to SiC whisker addition was not observed. The post-sintered body had the maximum bending strength of 195 MPa.
