Effect of Fluxes on the Wear of MgO Coating Materials for Tundish (턴디쉬용 MgO Coating 재의 손상에 미치는 Flux의 영향)

  • The effects of fluxes on MgO coating materials for tundish were investigated. As the number of charge in continuous casting was increased, the basicity of tundish slag was decreased due to the increase of silica formed by dissolution from rice hull. As a result, the wear of magnesia lining was increased. In aggregates of MgO coating materials, magnesioferrite was formed by the reaction between magnesia and ferric oxide formed by the oxidation of molten steel, while matrix parts of MgO coating materials were worn by CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 compounds. Silica in rice hull extracted to the molten slag reduced basicity of slag and formed forsterite in the result of its reaction with magnesia lining. Also, fayalite was formed from the reaction between silica and ferric oxide and it caused the increment of magnesia lining's wear. The wear of magnesia lining by flux of CaO-SiO2 was larger than that of Cao-Al2O3 and calcia in the flux increased the wear of magnesia lining through the formation of rankinite.

The Oxide Coating Effects on the Magnetic Properties of Amorphous Alloys

  • A variety of metal oxides were coated by sol-gel process from their metal alkoxides on the ribbons of Co-based and Fe-based amorphous alloys, and the effects of surface oxide coating on the magnetic properties of the alloy are investigated. The core loss is found to be reduced significantly by the oxide coating, the loss reduction becoming more prominent at higher frequencies. The shape of the hystersis loop is also dependent upon the kind of the coated metal oxide. The coatings of MgO, SiO2, MgO·SiO2 and MgO·Al2O3 induce tensile stress into the Fe-based ribbon whereas those of BaO, Al2O3, CaO·Al2O3, SrO·Al2O3 and BaO·Al2O3 induce compressive stress. These results may be explained by the modification of domain structures via magnetoelastic interactions with the shrinkage stress induced by the sol-gel coating.

Effects of Cooling Rates of Coating Layer on Microstructures and Corrosion Behaviors of Zn-Al-Mg Alloy Coated Steel Sheets (Zn-Al-Mg 합금도금강판의 도금 층 냉각속도 제어에 따른 미세조직 및 부식거동 분석)

  • To understand effects of cooling rates of coating layer on microstructures and corrosion behaviors of hot-dip alloy coated steel sheets (Zn-5%Al-2%Mg) in a neutral aqueous condition with chloride ion, a range of experimental and analytical methods were used in this study. Results showed that a faster cooling rate during solidification decreased the fraction of primary Zn, and increased the fraction of Zn-Al phase. In addition, interlamellar spacing became refined under a faster cooling rate. These modifications of the coating structure had higher open circuit potentials (OCP) with smaller anodic and cathodic current densities in the electrochemical potentiodynamic polarization. Surface analyses after a salt spray test showed that the increase in the Zn-Al phase in the coating formed under a faster cooling rate might have contributed to the formation of simonkolleite (Zn5(OH)8Cl2·H2O) and hydrotalcite (ZnAl2(OH)6Cl2·H2O) with a protective nature on the corroded outer surface, thus delaying the formation of red rust.

Corrosion resistance of double Al-Mg coating films on steel sheet prepared by PVD method (PVD법에 의해 제작된 Al-Mg 이층 코팅막의 내식특성)

  • Al-Mg films were prepared onto steel sheet according to deposition condition by eco-friendly electron beam vacuum evaporation method. The influence of Al-Mg films on corrosion resistance was evaluated by salt spray test and electrochemical method etc.. From the experimented results, it was found that the Al-Mg films which showed good corrosion resistance tend to have fine structure with homogenious composition distribution. In addition, it was shown that the property of coating films can be improve by controlling thickness ratio and uniform distribution of intermetallic compounds in Al-Mg films.

  • This study has been carried out to examine into wettability of Cu-5%Sn alloy in $Al_2O_3$, MgO, $SiO_2$ and graphite, respectively and investigated into the change in macrostructure of Cu-5%Sn alloy according to kind and mixing rate of mold-coating. The results obtained from the experiment are summerized as follows; 1. Cu Cu-5%Sn alloy, wettabilities of $Al_2O_3$ and MgO were good, on the other hand, wettabilities of $SiO_2$ and graphite were bad. 2. The fine equiaxed zone was created because of the role of $Al_2O_3$ and MgO as preferential nucleation sites. 3. Notwithstanding change of mixing rate of $SiO_2$ in mold coating the equixed zone was not created. 4. The area of equiaxed zone was varied according to mixing rate in the case of using $Al_2O_3$ and MgO in mold-coating.

Effect of the Coating Structure on the Corrosion Resistance of Al-Mg Coated Steel (Al-Mg 코팅층의 구조가 강판 내식성에 미치는 영향)

  • Double-layered Al-Mg films have been deposited by using an e-beam deposition method on a cold-rolled steel sheet(CR), which the structure of the film was Al/Mg/CR. The micro-structure, alloy phase, and corrosion resistance of the Al-Mg coated CR were investigated before and after heat treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ for 2, 3, and 10 min in a nitrogen atmosphere. Total thickness of Al-Mg films was fixed at $3{\mu}m$ and the thickness ratio of Al and Mg layers(Al:Mg) has been changed from 5:1 to 1:5. The cross-sectional morphology of the films, which had the thickness ratio of 2:1(Al:Mg), 1:1, and 1:2, was changed after heat treatment from columnar to featureless structure. The x-ray diffraction data for as-deposited films showed only pure Al and Mg peaks. Al-Mg alloy peaks such as $Al_3Mg_2$ and $Al_{12}Mg_{17}$ phase appeared after the heat treatment. The Al-Mg coating with the thickness ratio of 1:1(Al:Mg) showed the best corrosion resistance of up to 500 hours by salt spray test.

Chromate Conversion Coating on 3D Printed Aluminum Alloys (3D 프린팅으로 제조한 알루미늄 합금의 크로메이트 코팅)

  • The demand for metal 3D printing technology is increasing in various industries. The materials commonly used for metal 3D printing include aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, and stainless steel. In particular, for applications in the aviation and defense industry, aluminum alloy 3D printing parts are being produced. To improve the corrosion resistance in the 3D printed aluminum alloy outputs, a post-treatment process, such as chromate coating, should be applied. However, powdered materials, such as AlSi7Mg and AlSi10Mg, used for 3D printing, have a high silicon content; therefore, a suitable pretreatment is required for chromate coating. In the desmut step of the pretreatment process, the chromate coating can be formed only when a smut composed of silicon compounds or oxides is effectively removed. In this study, suitable desmut solutions for 3D printed AlSi7Mg and AlSi10Mg materials with high silicon contents were presented, and the chromate coating properties were studied accordingly. The smut removal effect was confirmed using an aqueous desmut solution composed of sulfuric, nitric, and hydrofluoric acids. Thus, a chromate coating was successfully formed. The surfaces of the aluminum alloys after desmut and chromate coating were analyzed using SEM and EDS.

  • To improve the efficiency of removal of bacteria and virus with DynaSand Filters used for treatment of recycling wastewater from aquaculture, effect of biofilm formation on bacterial transport through coated sand was estimated. At the neutral pH (pH 7.0), the coated sand was positive of zeta potential (surface charge). Column experiments were also carried out to test the effect of uncoated sand as well as coated sand with Al and Fe. The coated sand influenced more significantly the surface properties, adsorption and transport than the uncoated sand. The leaching batch system investigated for synthetic water showed concentrations of 7.47, 4.80, 20.89 and 7.23 mg/L for the uncoated sand, coated sand with Al, Fe and Al+Fe, respectively. Hence there are significant differences among the tested coatings with reference to bacterial transport and surface properties.

Effects of hairline treatment on surface blackening and thermal diffusion of Zn-Al-Mg alloy-coated steel sheet (Zn-Al-Mg 합금도금강판의 헤어라인 처리가 표면흑색화 및 열확산도에 미치는 영향)

  • The effects of hairline treatment on surface blackening and thermal diffusion behaviors of Zn-Al-Mg alloy coated steel sheet were evaluated by the three-dimensional surface profiler and laser-flash technique. The metallographic observation of coating damages by hairline treatments showed that several cracks were initiated and propagated along the interface between primary Zn/eutectic phases. As the hairline processing became more severe, the crack occurrence frequency in eutectic phase of coating layer and the surface roughness increased, which had a proportional relationship with the level of blackening on the coating surface. In addition, the higher interfacial areas of the blackened coating surface, caused by the hairline process, led to an increase in thermal diffusivity and conductivity of the coated steel sheet. On the other hand, when the coating damage by hairline treatment was excessive and the steel substrate was exposed, there was little difference between the thermal diffusivity/conductivity of the untreated sample though the blackening degree was higher than that of untreated sample. This work suggests that the increase in the surface areas of the coating layer without exposure to steel substrate through hairline treatment can be one of the effective technical strategies for the development of Zn-Al-Mg alloy coated steel sheets with higher blackening level and thermal diffusivity.

Influence of Post Heat Treatment on Corrosion Resistance of Al-Mg coating Films (Al-Mg 코팅막의 내식특성에 대한 열처리의 영향)

  • 본 연구에서 PVD법중 하나인 스퍼터링(sputtering)법에 의해 제작된 Al-Mg 코팅막은 SEM, GDS, XRD를 통해 표면 및 단면의 조성분포를 분석하였으며, 내식성을 평가하기 위하여 함량별, 열처리 조건별 Al-Mg 막을 각각 5% NaCl 염수분무 환경 및 3% NaCl 자연침지 환경에 노출시켰다. 막의 내식 특성에 영향을 미치는 열처리의 영향을 알아보기 위하여 열처리-비열처리간 재료 특성 및 내식성평가 결과의 연관성을 비교-분석하였다. 열처리 결과 Al-Mg계 금속간 화합물 $Al_3Mg_2$$Al_{12}Mg_{17}$이 관찰되었으며 내식성 평가 결과, 열처리 Al-Mg 막은 비열처리 Al-Mg 막과 비교하여 양호한 내식성을 나타냈었다. 열처리를 통해 마그네슘(Mg) 성분이 대부분 금속간 화합물상으로 존재함에 따라 균일하게 분포하여 치밀한 부식생성물을 형성하게 되고, 이에 따라 Al-Mg 막 내식성에 기여한 것으로 사료된다.
