Effect of iron and manganese contents on die soldering reaction has been studied in Al-9wt.%Si-0.3wt.%Mg alloy. Ternary ${\alpha}_{hcp}-Al_8Fe_2Si$ and ${\alpha}_{bcc}-Al_8Fe_2Si$ intermetallic compounds formed by interaction diffusion between Al-Si-Mg system alloy melt and SKD61 die steel surface. Thickness of soldering reaction layer in die steel surface decreased as Fe and Mn contents of the melts increased : When Fe content of Al-9wt.%Si-0.3wt.%Mg melts at constant 0.5wt%Mn content was 0.15wt.%, 0.45wt.% and 0.6wt.%, thickness of soldered layer of each alloy was $64.5{\mu}m,\;57.3{\mu}m$ and $46.9{\mu}m$ respectively. For Mn content of the alloy melts at constant 0.45wt.%Fe content was 0.30wt.%, 0.50wt.% and 0.70wt.%, thickness of soldered layer of each alloy was $66.1{\mu}m,\;57.3{\mu}m$ and $48.3{\mu}m$ respectively.
Nanofiltration (NF) experiments were conducted to investigate fouling of Al-hydroxide precipitate and the influence of organic compound, inorganic compound, and their combination, i.e., multiple foulants. $CaCl_2$ and $MgSO_4$ were employed as surrogates of inorganic compounds while humic acid was used as surrogate of organic compound. The flux attained from NF experiments was fitted with the mathematical fouling model to evaluate the potential fouling mechanisms. Al-hydroxide fouling with a cake formation mechanism had little effect on the NF membrane fouling regardless of the Al concentration. The NF fouling by Al-hydroxide precipitate was deteriorated in presence of inorganic matter. The effect of Mg was more critical in increasing the fouling than Ca. This is because the Mg ions enhanced the resistances of the cake layer accumulated by the Al-hydroxide precipitate on the membrane surfaces. However, the fouling with Mg was dramatically mitigated by adding humic acid. It is interesting to observe that the removal of the conductivity was enhanced to 61.2% in presence of Mg and humic acid from 30.9% with Al-hydroxide alone. The influence of dissolved matter (i.e., colloids) was more negative than particulate matter on the NF fouling for Al-hydroxide precipitate in presence of inorganic and organic matter.
Hot-dipped Al-Mg-Si coatings to alternate Zn and Zn alloy coatings for steel were examined on metallographic structure, corrosion resistance, sacrificial ability, formation and growth of inter-metallic compounds, and mechanical properties. Near the eutectic composition of quasi-binary system of Al-$Mg_2Si$, very fine eutectic structure of ${\alpha}$-Al and $Mg_2Si$ was obtained and it showed excellent corrosion resistivity and sacrificial ability for a steel in sodium chloride solutions. Formation and growth of Al-Fe inter-metallic compounds at the interface of substrate steel and coated layer was suppressed by addition of Si. The inter-metallic compounds layer was usually brittle, however, the coating layer did not peel off as long as the thickness of the inter-metallic compounds layer was small enough. During sacrificial protection of a steel, amount of hydrogen into the steel was more than ten times smaller than that of Zn coated steel, suggesting to prevent hydrogen embrittlement. Al-Mg-Si coating is expected to apply for several kinds of high strength steels.
The crystallization behaviors of slag-based glass in $CaO-MgO-Al_2O_3-SiO_2(-Na_2O)$ system have been studied. The mother glass containing 16.50 CaO, 7.50MgO, 19.70Al2O3, 50.80SiO3 and 2.09wt% $Na_2O$ was prepared by using Korean domestic raw materials such as granulated slag, serpentine, sea sand and etc. The glass-ceramics composed of major crystalline phase diopside was produced by the heat treatment in a temperature range from 850$^{\circ}$ to 9$25^{\circ}C$ for 0-6hr. The composition and morphology of diopside phase formed in the system were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis and electron microscopy. The kinetic measurements such as J.M. A plot and Arrhenius plot indicated that the process of nucleation of the initially formed diopside phase could be described from the view point of instantaneous nucleation. It was also demonstrated that the linear crystal growth of diopside phase was proceeded by short range diffusion of $Mg^{2+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$ ion. The microstructures of the resulting glass-ceramics were consisted of leafroidal shaped crystalline aggregations.
Alumium alloys casting are gaining increased acceptance in the automotive and electronic industeries and squeeze casting is the most efficient method of manufacturing such mass produced parts. This study has been investigated the microstructures and mechanical properties of Al-7.0Si-0.4Mg(AC4C)alloy fabricated by squeeze casting process for development of Engine Mountain Bracket. The microstructure of squeeze casted specimen were composed of eutectic structure Alumimim solid solution and $Mg_2Si$ precipitates. The tensile strength of as-solid solution treatment Al-7.0Si-0.4Mg alloy revealed 2985MPa. It was found that Al-7.0Si-0.4Mg alloy have good aging hardening effect results are presented to show the validity of the control method.

The viscosities of $CaO-SiO_2-Al_2O_3-MgO$ flux were measured under the condition of $CaO/SiO_2=1.0-1.3$ and 5-20 wt%MgO. Submerged arc welding flux with $5wt%Al_2O_3$ content had the lowest critical temperature and widest solid-liquid coexisting region at about 5 wt%MgO. It indicateds that both critical temperature and viscosity depend on the kind of primary phase of molten flux. Viscous behavior of the molten flux at 1773 K was analyzed in the view of silicate structure changed by FT-IR spectroscopy. Based on the critical temperature and the behavior of viscosity at a fixed temperature, it could be proposed that the contents of MgO and $Al_2O_3$ in SAW flux show a pronounced effect on preventing contamination in maintaining the liquid phase flux after welding process.
Dense $BaMgAl_{10}O_{17}:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor particles with a spherical shape have been synthesized through spray pyrolysis method using basic aluminum nitrate precursor as a spray solution. This $BaMgAl_{10}O_{17}:Eu^{2+}$ particles prepared by the spray pyrolysis have shown the stronger emission intensity compared to the commercially-available $BaMgAl_{10}O_{17}:Eu^{2+}$. However, thermal stability of the BAM:Eu b lue phosphor is very poor due to changing from $Eu^{2+}$ to $Eu^{3+}$ at the thermal process, so brightness of the phosphor decreases. To improve the thermal stability of the dense BAM:Eu phosphor, the spherical BAM:Eu particles were coated with pure $BaMgAl_{10}O_{17}$ layer using the hydrolysis reaction in a solution system. The synthesized powders were characterized by XRD, SEM and PL. On the other hand, the emission properties of the BAM:Eu phosphors coated with $BaMgAl_{10}O_{17}$ layer before and after thermal treatment at $500^{\circ}C$ for 30 min were estimated under VUV excitation. The brightness of the coated phosphor was higher than that of the uncoated phosphor. Also, the coating thickness of BAM layer in the BAM:Eu particles was optimized.
The evaluation and analysis of diffusivity of lithium for coarsening and coarsening kinetics of ${\delta}^{\prime}$ precipitate in Al-Li-Cu-Mg-Zr alloy aged at $170^{\circ}C$ have been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. With ageing time, ${\delta}^{\prime}$ precipitate coaesened to followed $\bar{\gamma}{\propto}t^{1/3}$ and coarsening kinetics was found to be obeyed to the Lifshitz-Slyozov-Wagner(LSW) theory and diffusivity of lithium for coarsening of ${\delta}^{\prime}$ precipitate in Al-Li-Cu-Mg-Zr alloy was obtained to be $5.85{\times}10^{-17}{\sim}1.53{\times}10^{-16}$ by experimental coarsening rate constant and various coarsening kinetic theory. Diffusivity of lithium measured by using various model but MLSW and Tsumuraya (VI) et al. model in Al-Li-Cu-Mg-Zr alloy is similar to that calculated by the Costas's diffusivity equation. It was, therefore, suggested that additing to the Cu, Mg and Zr element in Al-Li system have no great effect on diiffusivity of lithium for coarsening of ${\delta}^{\prime}$ This suggest that in matrix.

Al-Zn-Mg-Si alloy coatings have been developed to inhibit corrosion of cold rolled steel sheets, and an understanding of the alloy system helps prevent coating defects. We used a Bridgman furnace to characterise the nature and formation mechanisms of the phases present in the quaternary system with 0.4 wt% Fe. In the directional solidification experiments we imposed steep temperature gradients and varied the pull rate. After the samples were quenched in the furnace, detailed characterization of the samples was carried out by electron microscopy (SEM/EDS). From the dT/dt vs T plots of the cooling curves of the alloys, the solidification path was determined to be $Liquid{\longrightarrow[80]^{544-558}}{\alpha}-Al{\longrightarrow[80]^{453-459}}Al/Mg_2Si{\longrightarrow[80]^{371-374}}Al/Zn{\longrightarrow[80]^{331-333}}Zn/mgZn_2$. The formation mechanisms of the Mg and Zn containing phases and their morphology was discussed together with the effects of the cooling rate. Key findings include the lengthening of the mushy zone in directionally solidified samples remelted against a positive temperature gradient, as well as an enrichening of the α-Al phase by Zn through remelting. Mg2Si and other Si based phases were observed to adopt a much finer faceted microstructure in favour of a script-like microstructure when exposed to the higher cooling rate of coolant quenching.

$K^+-{\beta}/{\beta}"-Al_2O_3$ in the ternary system $K_2O-MgO-Al_2O_3$ was directly synthesized by solid state reaction. The phase formation and phase relation were carefully investigated in relation to starting composition, calcining temperature and time, and dispersion medium. The optimal synthetic condition was also examined for the formation of ${\beta}"-Al_2O_3$ phase with a maximum fraction. As a composition range, the mole ratio of $K_2O$ to $Al_2O_3$ was changed from 1:5 to 1:6.2 and the amount of MgO used as a stabilizer was varied from 4.2 wt % to 6.3 wt %. The calcining temperature was selected between $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1500^{\circ}C$. At $1000^{\circ}C$, the ${\beta}/{\beta}"-Al_2O_3$ phases began to form resulted from the combining of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ and $KAlO_2$ and increased with temperature rising. All of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ phase disappeared to be homogenized to the ${\beta}/{\beta}"-Al_2O_3$ phase at $1200^{\circ}C$. Near the temperature at $1300^{\circ}C$, the fraction of ${\beta}"-Al_2O_3$ phase showed a maximum value with the composition of $K_{1.67}Mg_{0.67}Al_{10.33}O_{17}$. At temperatures above $1300^{\circ}C$, the fraction of ${\beta}"-Al_2O_3$ phase decreased gradually owing to $K_2O$ loss caused by a high potassium vapor pressure, and the appropriate calcining time was about 5 hours. Acetone was more effective than distilled water as a dispersion medium for milling and mixing.
