The present work was aimed to examine the variation of precipitations and mechanical properties by thermomechanical treatments (TMT) in Al-2.19 wt%Li and Al-2.0 wt%Li-0.11 wt%Zr alloys. This study was performed by TEM, SEM observation, DSC, electrical resistance measurement, hardness and tensile strength measurement. First peak of resistivity aged at $90^{\circ}C$ was caused by precipitation of ${\delta}^{\prime}$-precursor phase, and second peak was caused by precipitation of ${\delta}^{\prime}$ phase. According to this result, the precipitation process of Al-2.19 wt%Li alloy was as follow : $SSSS{\rightarrow}{\delta}^{\prime}$-precursor phase ${\rightarrow}{\delta}^{\prime}$ (Coherent ${\rightarrow}$ Semi-coherent) ${\rightarrow}{\delta}$. In a Al-2.0 wt%Li-0.11 wt%Zr ternary alloy, the first peak of resistivity was appeared at initial aging heat-treatment. It is result from exsistant of ${\delta}^{\prime}$-precursor phase. The effect acceleration in a binary alloy was not appeared and the over-aging ternary alloy was accelerated with increase of the reduction rate. It is caused by combination effect of ${\delta}^{\prime}$ and composite phase.
To clarify the influence of precipitation microstructure and inclusion on the monotonic tensile fracture behaviors in 2090 alloy aged at $180^{\circ}C$, the detailed measurement of hardness, tensile strength, elongation and the observation of scanning electron micrography, transmision electron micrography have been carried out. The transgranular shear ductile fracture has been observed in specimen quenched after solution treatment at $500^{\circ}C$ for 45min. While the under-aged specimen was fractured in both transgranular shear ductile and intergranular fracture mode, the fracture mode of peak-aged and over-aged alloy was predominantly intergranular fracture. The fracture behavior of each ageing condition was influenced by the change of precipitation microstructural features. In the case of peak-aged and over-aged alloys, the coarse and heterogeneous slip band caused by both shearable nature of the ${\delta}^{\prime}(Al_3Li)$ precipitates and PFZ along the high angle grain boundary aid the localization of deformation, resulting in low energy intergranular fracture. It was also estimated that the fractured T-type intermetallic phases (inclusion) and the equilibrium ${\delta}$(AlLi) phases which were formed at grain boundaries palyed an important role in promoting intergranular fracture mode.

The microstructure and tensile properties of Al-Mn/Al-Si hybrid aluminum alloys prepared by electromagnetic duocasting were investigated. Only the Al-Mn alloy showed the typical cast microstructure of columnar and equiaxed crystals. The primary dendrites and eutectic structure were clearly observed in the Al-Si alloy. There existed a macro-interface of Al-Mn/Al-Si alloys in the hybrid aluminum alloys. The macro-interface was well bonded, and the growth of primary dendrites in Al-Si alloy occurred from the macro-interface. The Al-Mn/Al-Si hybrid aluminum alloys with a well-bonded macro-interface showed excellent tensile strength and 0.2% proof stress, both of which are comparable to those values for binary Al-Mn alloy, indicating that the strength is preferentially dominated by the deformation of the Al-Mn alloy side. However, the degree of elongation was between that of binary Al-Mn and Al-Si alloys. The Al-Mn/Al-Si hybrid aluminum alloys were fractured on the Al-Mn alloy side. This was considered to have resulted from the limited deformation in the Al-Mn alloy side, which led to relatively low elongation compared to the binary Al-Mn alloy.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of low melting point phase(LMPP) on mechanical properties in the Al-Cu-Li-X(In, Be) alloys. This study was performed by the differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), the transmission electron microscope(TEM), hardness test, tensile test and notch tensile test. The shape of LMPP in the specimens homogenized at $570^{\circ}C$ was film type due to remelting at grain boundary during homogenization. Low melting point phases had no effects on mechanical properties in the aging treated materials, because the density of LMPPs was low. Mechanical properties of the aging treated materials were affected by the density of matrix precipitation phases and grain sizes. For the In or In, Be added Al-Cu-Li alloys, the optimum solution treatment temperature was $550^{\circ}C$. The strength of Al-Cu-Li-In-Be $T_6$ treated alloy was higher than that of 2090-$T_8$ alloy.
Fabrication of high strength Mg-Li-Al alloys by squeeze casting was established by the stabilization of melt and mold temperatures, applied pressure and the refining method. The entrapment of inclusions during pouring was prevented using 30 ppi alumina foam filter. The as-cast microstructure consists of a mixture of ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ phases including AILi and $MgLi_2$, Al particles, which are distributed in the ${\beta}$ matrix. The grain sizes of gravity and squeeze casting alloys were 288 ${\mu}m$ and 207 ${\mu}m$ respectively. The addition of Al in Mg-Li alloys promoted the formation of second phase particles, which were adjusted to optimize the properties of Mg-Li-Al alloys. The Mg-10wt%Li-5wt%Al alloy after heat treatment at $350^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour showed the maximum hardness value. This is due to the facts that the amounts of ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ phases and their distributions are dependent upon the solution treatment temperature, and that the amounts of AILi and $MgLi_2Al$ particles are dependent upon the Al content.
Effects of thermomechanical treatments(TMT) on the microstructures and mechanical properties in Al-2.27%, Li-1.28%, Cu-0.63%, Mg-0.12%, Zr alloy were investigated. The TMT process improved the tensile strength. Growth of ${\delta}^{\prime}$, S' and $T_1$ phases was restrained by TMT processes while the density of ${\delta}^{\prime}$, S' and $T_1$ phases was increased by TMT processes. The TMT treated specimens tend to fail in inter-subboundary mode. The increases of strength by the T-HA processes were compared to those of the T-AHA processes.
A study was conducted to examine the precipitation phenomena of Al-2.1Li-2.9Cu alloy by differential scanning calorimetry and transmission electron microscopy. DSC curves were measured over the temperature range of $25{\sim}550^{\circ}C$ at a heating rate of $2{\sim}20^{\circ}C$/min.. Three heat evolution peaks and three heat absorption peaks were observed in the DSC curve for the as-quenched specimen. From DSC results and TEM analysis, it was proved that the precipitation sequence in the as-quenched specimen is supersaturated solid solution ${\rightarrow}$ GP zone ${\rightarrow}{\delta}^{\prime}{\rightarrow}T_1{\rightarrow}T_2$ and ${\theta}^{\prime}$ was detected in the peak aged specimen at $160^{\circ}C$. The major phase formed at peak hardeness in the aging at $160^{\circ}C$ was ${\delta}^{\prime}$ phase. The activation energies for the formation of ${\delta}^{\prime}$ and $T_1$ phases were 22.3kcal/mole and 24.3kcal/mole, respectively. These lower activation energies than those for diffusion of Cu and Li in Al are ascribed to the quenched-in excess vacancies.
A study was conducted to examine the effects of In addition on the precipitation behaviors of Al-2.1Li-2.9Cu alloy by differential scanning calorimetry, transmission electron microscopy and micro-hardness tester. DSC analysis was measured over the temperature range of $25{\sim}550^{\circ}C$ at a heating rate of $2{\sim}20^{\circ}C$/min. The heat evolution peaks due to the formation of GP zone and ${\delta}$'phase shift to higher temperature and the peaks to $T_1$ and ${\theta}$'phases shift to lower temperature by In addition. From this result, it was proved that the formation of GP zone and ${\delta}$'phase is suppresed whereas that of $T_1$ and ${\theta}$'phases are accelerated by the In addition of 0.15wt%. The age hardening curve aged at $190^{\circ}C$ showed that the In bearing alloy(alloy B) has more faster age hardening response and a higher peak hardness than In-free alloy(alloy A), attributed to the fine and homogeneous distribution of $T_1$ and ${\theta}$'phases. The activation energies for the formation of ${\delta}$'phase in In-free and In-bearing alloys are 22.3kcal/mol and 18.6kcal/mol, respectively. Those for $T_1(+{\theta}^{\prime})$ phase of In-free and In-bearing alloys are 24.3 and 37.5kcal/mol, respectively. Quenched-in excess vacancies play an important role to the formation of precipitates.
The effect of strain rate on the yield stress of an Al-Li alloy has been investigated at temperatures between 77 and 523 K and over the strain rate range from $1.77{\times}10^{-4}s^{-1}$ to $1.77{\times}10^{-2}s^{-1}$. At testing temperatures below 373 K, the yield stress is almost independent of strain rate at any aging stage. At testing temperatures above 373 K, the yield stress increases linearly with the logarithm of strain rate, and the strain rate dependence increases with increasing testing temperature. The yield stresses of under-aged alloy at temperatures between 373 and 473 K at high strain rates are greater than the yield stress at 77 K. For the alloy under-aged or aged nearly to its peak strength, the temperature range within which the positive temperature dependence of yield stress appears expands to the higher temperature side with increasing strain rate. The strain rate dependence of the yield stress is slightly negative at this aging stage. The yield stress of the over-aged alloy decreases monotonically with decreasing strain rate and with increasing testing temperature above 373 K. The modulus normalized yield stress is nearly constant at testing temperatures below 373 K at any strain rate investigated. And, strength depends largely both on the aging conditions and on the testing temperature. The peak positions in strength vs. aging time curves shift to the side of shorter aging time with increasing testing temperature. For the specimens aged nearly to the peak strength, the positive temperature dependence of yield stress is observed in the temperature range. The shift of peak positions in the aging curves are explained in terms of the positive temperature dependence of cutting stress and the negative temperature dependence of by-passing stress.
