  • Application of a new photocatalyst has been attempted to improve the efficiency and rates of photocatalytic degradation of azo dyes by using a model dye such as Methyl Orange. As a new photocatalyst, $TiO_2$ encapsulated EFAL-removed zeolite Y ($TiO_2$ /EFAL-removed zeolite Y) has been synthesized by ion-exchange in the mixture of EFAL-removed zeolite Y with 0.05 M aqueous [$(NH_4)_2 TiO(C_2O_4)_2.H_2O$] [$TiO(C_2O_4)_2.H_2O$]. This new photocatalyst has been characterized by measuring XRD, IR and reflectance absorption spectra as well as ICP analysis, and it was found that the framework structure of $TiO_2$ /EFAL-removed zeolite Y is not changed by removing the extra-framework aluminum (EFAL) from the normal zeolite Y and the $TiO_2$ inside the photocatalyst exists in the form of $(TiO^{2+})_n$ nanoclusters. Based on the ICP analysis, the Si/Al ratio of the $TiO_2$ /EFAL-removed zeolite Y and the weight of $TiO_2$ were determined to be 23 and 0.061g in 1.0g photocatalyst, respectively. It was also found that adsorption of the azo dye in the $TiO_2$ /EFAL-removed zeolite is very effective (about 80 % of the substrate used). This efficient adsorption contributes to the synergistic photocatalytic activities of the $TiO_2$ /EFAL-removed zeolite by minimizing the required flux diffusion of the substrate. Thus, the photocatalytic reduction of methyl orange (MO) was found to be 8 times more effective in the presence of $TiO_2$ /EFAL-removed zeolite Y than in the presence of $TiO_2$ /normal zeolite Y. Furthermore, the photocatalytic reduction of MO by using 1.0 g of the $TiO_2$ /EFAL-removed zeolite Y containing 0.061g of $TiO_2$ is much faster than that carried out by using 1.0 g of Degussa P-25.

  • Precambrian metamorphic rocks of the Gapyeong-Cheongpyeong area consist of banded gneiss, augen gneiss, leucocratic gneiss, quartz schist and quartzite, together with minor intercalations of serpentinite, amphibolite and marble. Mineral assemblages of meta-sedimentary rocks are classified into three types: sillimanite-free; sillimanite-bearing; and sillimanite+K-feldspar-bearing assemblages. Compositions of metamorphic phases depend on the type of mineral assemblages. In particular, the Ca contents of plagioclase and garnet are high in sillimanite-free assemblges. Kyanite occurs in three samples, and coexists with sillimanite in one sample. The presence of kyanite indicates that metamorphic rocks of the study area have experienced the Barrovian type metamorphism. Peak metamorphic conditions estimated from various geothermobarometers and phase equilibria are 618-674$^{\circ}C$ and 6.5${\pm}$2.0 kbar for sillimanite-free assemblages, and 701-740$^{\circ}C$ and 4.4${\pm}$0.8 kbar for sillimanite-bearing assemblages, respectively. Furthermore, a clockwise P-T-time path is deduced for the study area, based on the following observations: (1) the polymorphic transition of kyanite to sillimanite, (2) the occurrence of sillimanite and K-feldspar belonging to the upper amphibolite facies, and finally (3) the retrograde metamorphism characterized by muscovite-, chlorite-, and actinolite-bearing assemblages.

  • In this research, the chemical composition of the iron artifacts from the late 6th-century to early 7thcentury Baekje remains in Gwanbuk-ri, Buyeo, specifically of the nine iron artifacts including slags, furnace walls and ingot iron excavated in the District "Na", were examined by observing their chemical compounds and microstructures. As a result, GB1 and GB6 were determined to be proto-reduction lumps whereas GB2, GB3, GB4 and GB5 were determined to be tempered slags, respectively. Also, he furnace wall GB7 were containing mullite and cristobalite, which are high temperature index minerals, The extrusion temperature was found out to be about $1200{\sim}1300^{\circ}C$, and it is most likely that the smelting temperature in the furnace was in that temperature range. GB8 ingot iron was determined to be a forged ironware. This ingot iron was an intermediary product for making ironware and its nonmetallic inclusions displayed similar microstructure and contents compared to the forged iron. Because of the existence of proto-reduction lumps and forged iron, the iron making facility located in District "Na" most likely had a small-scale iron making facility that handled iron bloom smelting and refining processes.

  • Improvement of heat sink technology related to the continuous implementation performance and extension of device-life in circumstance of easy heating and more compact space has been becoming more important issue as multi-functional integration and miniaturization trend of electronic gadgets and products has been generalized. In this study, it purposed to minimize of decline of the heat diffusivity by gluing polymer through compounding of inorganic particles which have thermal conductive properties. We used NH-9300 as base resin and used inorganic fillers such as silicon carbide(SiC), aluminum nitride(AlN), and boron nitride(BN) to improve heat diffusivity. After making film which was made from 100 part of acrylic resin mixed hardener(1.0 part more or less) with inorganic particles. The film was matured at $80^{\circ}C$ for 24h. Diffusivity were tested according to sorts of particles and density of particles as well as size and structure of particle to improve the effect of heat sink in view of morphology assessing diffusivity by LFA(Netzsch/LFA 447 Nano Flash) and adhesion strength by UTM(Universal Testing Machine). The correlation between diffusivity of pure inorganic particles and composite as well as the relation between density and morphology of inorganic particles has been studied. The study related morphology showed that globular type had superior diffusivity at low density of 25% but on the contarary globular type was inferior to non-globular type at high density of 80%.

  • Portland cement production is under critical review due to high amount of $CO_2$ gas released to the atmosphere. Attempts to increase the utilization of a by-products such as fly ash and ground granulated blast-furnace slag to partially replace the cement in concrete are gathering momentum. Many researchs on alkali-activated concrete that does not need the presence of cement as a binder have been carried out recently. Instead, the sources of material such as fly ash, that are rich in Silicon(Si) and Aluminium(Al), are activated by alkaline liquids to produce the binder. Hence concrete with no cement is effect reduction of $CO_2$ gas. In this study, we investigated the influence of the fluidity, air content and compressive strength of mortar on alkaline activator in order to develop cementless fly ash and ground granulated blast-furnace slag based alkali-activated mortar with superplasticizer. In view of the results, we found out that Pn of fluidity and compressive strength is the best in four type of superplasticizer, and PNS of powder type of fluidity is better than that of liquid type in the case of AA.

  • Opal glass samples having different chemical compositions were synthesized and transparent glass was obtained after melting. The effects of $TiO_2$, $BaF_2$, and $CeO_2$ content on the color of the opal glass were studied by observing images of the opal samples and analyzing the results via ultraviolet visible spectroscopy and color spectrometry. The aesthetic properties of the opal glass were determined by studying the transmittance of visible light in the 400 nm to 700 nm range. The basic chemical composition of opal glass was $SiO_2$ 52.9 wt%, $Al_2O_3$ 12.35 wt%, $Na_2CO_3$ 15.08 wt%, $K_2CO_3$ 10.35 wt%, $Ca_3(PO)_4$ 4.41 wt%, $MgCO_3$ 1.844 wt%, $LiCO_3$ 2.184 wt%, and $TiO_2$ 0.882 wt%. The glass samples were prepared by varying the weight percentage of $TiO_2$, $BaF_2$, and $CeO_2$. The transmittance of visible light was decreased from 95 % to 75 % in the glass samples in which $TiO_2$ content was increased from 0 to 3.882 wt%. In the blue spectrum region, as the content of $TiO_2$ increased, the reflectance value was observed to become higher. This implies that $TiO_2$ content induces more crystal formation and has an important effect on the optical properties of the glass. The opalescence of opal samples that contained $CeO_2$ or $BaF_2$ is stronger than that in the samples containing $TiO_2$. Opal glass samples comprising $TiO_2$ had tetragonal lattice structures; samples including $CeO_2$ as an additive had cubic lattice structures (FCC, $CeO_2$).

  • The accelerated thermal aging of a CSPE were carried out for 0, 80.82, 161.63 days at $100^{\circ}C$, which are equal to 0, 40 and 80 years of aging at $50^{\circ}C$, respectively. The volume electrical resistivities of the seawater and freshwater flooding were measured through 3-terminal circuit diagram. The volume electrical resistivities of the 0y, 40y and 80y were $2.454{\times}10^{13}{\sim}1.377{\times}10^{14}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, $1.121{\times}10^{13}{\sim}7.529{\times}10^{13}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ and $1.284{\times}10^{13}{\sim}8.974{\times}10^{13}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ at room temperature, respectively. The dielectric constant of the 0y, 40y and 80y were 2.922~3.431, 2.613~3.285 and 2.921~3.332 at room temperature, respectively. It is certain that the ionic ($Na^+$, $Cl^-$, $Mg^{2+}$, ${SO_4}^{2-}$, $Ca^{2+}$, $K^+$) conduction current was formed by the salinity of the seawater. The volume electrical resistivity of the cleaned CSPE via freshwater trends slightly upward with the number of dried days at room temperature. As a result, the $CH_2$ component of thermally accelerated aged CSPE decreased after seawater and freshwater flooding for 5 days respectively, whereas the atoms such as Cl, O, Pb, Al, Si, Sb, S related with the conducting ion ($Na^+$, $Cl^-$, $Mg^{2+}$, ${SO_4}^{2-}$, $Ca^{2+}$, $K^+$) component increased relatively.

  • A new approach to the use of rice straw as a difficult-to-recycle agricultural waste was proposed. Potassium aluminosilicate was obtained by spark plasma sintering as an effective material for subsequent immobilization of 137Cs into a solid-state matrix. The sorption properties of potassium aluminosilicate to 137Cs from aqueous solutions were studied. The effect of the synthesis temperature on the phase composition, microstructure, and rate of cesium leaching from samples obtained at 800-1000 ℃ and a pressure of 25 MPa was investigated. It was shown that the positive dynamics of compaction was characteristic of glass ceramics throughout the sintering. Glass ceramics RS-(K,Cs)AlSi3O8 obtained by the SPS method at 1000 ℃ for 5 min was characterized by a high density of ~2.62 g/cm3, Vickers hardness ~ 2.1 GPa, compressive strength ~231.3 MPa and the rate of cesium ions leaching of ~1.37 × 10-7 g cm-2·day-1. The proposed approach makes it possible to safe dispose of rice straw and reduce emissions into the atmosphere of microdisperse amorphous silica, which is formed during its combustion and causes respiratory diseases, including cancer. In addition, the obtained is perspective to solve the problem of recycling long-lived 137Cs radionuclides formed during the operation of nuclear power plants into solid-state matrices.

  • Major element zoning has been analyzed in garnet porphroblasts obtained from the Grt-St and Ky-Grt-St grade assemblages in Zones I on the northern flank of the Pelham Dome, north central Massachusetts. These porphyroblasts grew during multiple phases of deformation and meta-morphism revealed by the inclusion trail geometry plus the chemical zoning patterns within garnet porphyroblasts. Unusual zoning patterns, including zoning reversals and gradient changes in XMn, zlgzag patterns in Fe/(Fe +Mg) and staircase-shaped patterns in XCa, are coincident with textural truncations and other changes in microstructure within the garnet porphrublasts. Chemical variations in plagioclase, biotite, muscovite and staurolite combined with inclusion trail geometry and petrography reveal that the garnet zoning patterns are modified by combinations of the following. (1) Uni-and divariant reactions involving garnet consumption(Grt+ Chl+Ms=St+Bt+Qtz + $H_2$O) and production(St+Ms + Qtz= Bt+ Grt +A1$_2$$SiO_{5}$ + $H_2$O). (2) Deformation induced episudic ionit dissolution, preferential diffusion and re-distribution during foliation development. (3) P-T changes during growth of the porphyroblasts. The P-T paths combined with petrographic and inclusion trail morphology observations consist of two pattens; (1) heating/compression during NW-SE shortening; and (2) decompression with cooling during NNW-SSE shortening. Based on temperature-time(T-t) geochronological data and late-Paleozoic tectonic model, Alleghanian metamorphism, which is the result of heterogeneous shearing concentrated along the boundary between the Abalone Terrane(Pelham dome) and cover rocks(Bronson Hill Terrane), has produced Ky-St-Ms mineral assemblage during Pennsylvanian(290-300 Ma) in Shutesbury area. However, temperature of alleghanian metamorphism was not high enough to form garnet and staurolite in the Northfiled syncline area. Alleghanian metamorphism has affected only the matrix due to heterogeneous shearing in the study area.
