The possibilities of producing Al-10%Ti-4%Fe composites through in-situ processing and thus achieving mechanical property improvements over binary Al-10%Ti to a level or higher exhibited by PM SiC/A12124 composites were explored in this study. The microstructure of in-situ processed Al-10%Ti-4%Fe composites was similar to that of Al matrix composites reinforced with discontinuous SiC particulates(SiC/A12124) and significant enhancements in elastic modulus, tensile strength and wear resistance were observed as compared to Al-10%Ti alloy. These results can be attributed to the in-situ formed Al. Fe by third element addition, leading to additional dispersion strengthening effect over $Al_3Ti$ phase reinforcement in Al-Ti system.
A series of styrene-butadiene-styrene/aluminium (SBR/Al) composites have been compounded with different weight ratios of Al. The prepared SBR-Al systems have been characterized for different mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tensile modulus and surface hardness have improved with the increase in content of Al in SBR matrix. This may is because of the increase in polymer-filler interaction. The electrical properties such as volume conductivity, surface resistivity, dielectric constant, dissipation factor (tan delta), and break down voltage of SBR/Al composites have been measured with reference to volume fraction $(V_{f}),$ frequency and temperature. The resistance of the SBR-Al composites is found to be ohmic. The voltage-current (V-I) characteristics for SBR-Al also exhibit a linear relationship indicating the ohmic behavior.
Fracture surfaces of materials contain useful information ranging from crack path to the mechanism of fracture. Since limitation of electron transparency requires a sample in the form of thin foil for TEM observations, it is impossible to extract such information directly from the fracture surfaces. In this study, the method of surface replication from the ceramic fracture surface is employed to characterize the process of crack propagation in ceramic matrix composites using TEM analysis. The surface replica from the fracture surface in ceramic materials provides detailed surface morphology and more importantly, loosened particles on the fracture surface are collected. Electron diffraction and chemical composition analyses of these particles reveal crack path in the specimen. Furthermore, one can determine the mode of fracture by observing the fracture surface morphology from the image of replica. Two examples are given to illustrate the potential of the surface replication technique. In the first example, apparent toughness increase in $B_{4}C-Al$ composites at high strain rate is investigated by surface replication to elucidate the mechanism of fracture at different strain rates. The polytypes of SiC formed during the sintering of SiC-AlN composite and their effect on the fracture behavior of SiC-AlN composite are analyzed in the second example.
Al/SiC composites were fabricated by thermal spray process, and the dry sliding wear tests were performed using the various sliding speed of 10, 30, 60 and 90 RPM through 1000 cycles. The applied load was 10 N and radius of wear track was 15 mm. Wear tracks on the Al/SiC composites were investigated using scanning electron microscope(SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). In the case of sliding speed of 10 RPM, adhesive wear behavior caused by plastic deformation of composits surface was observed. In the cases of sliding speed of 30, 60, 90 RPM, abrasive wear behavior on the adhered layer formed by debris were observed. Through this study, it was found that the wear behavior of Al/SiC composites was mainly influenced by the sliding speed.
Dense composites of titanium matrix and Al2O3 matrix with reinforcements of carbon or titanium carbide fibers were successfully fabricated by high-pressure self-combustion sintering method or combustion reacton under 30 MPa of uniaxial pressure with an aid of external heating in vaccum. It was found that the fibers were uniformly distributed in the matrix, and aligned in a phase perpendicular to the pressure axis. As a moel ratio of Ti/C or reaction time increased, the density of Ti-matrix composite increased Micro pores around fibers could be removed by using clean carbon fibers without sizing agent on their surface. The evolution of carbide fibers from carbon fibers was observed. The composition of the various phases around fibers were analyzed.

Al alloy matrix composite with TiNi shape memory fiber as reinforcement has been fabricated by hot pressing to investigate mechanical properties. The stress-strain behavior of the composites was evaluated at temperatures between 363K and room temperature as a function of pre-strain by using experimental and finite element analysis, and both cases showed that the tensile stress at 363K was higher than that of the room temperature. Especially, the tensile stress of this composite increases with increasing the amount of pre-strain, and it also depends on the volume fraction of fiber and heat treatment. The smartness of the composite is given due to the shape memory effect of the TiNi fiber which generates compressive residual stress in the matrix material when heated after being pre-strained.

Loss factors of A356, Mn-Cu alloy and aluminum matrix composites reinforced with $SiC_p$ and Ni-coated graphite particles at various contents have been investigated using clamped-free cantilever beam method. The loss factors of half-power bandwidth of the specimens were measured over a wide range of frequencies from 50 to 3300Hz. Among the specimens, Al-10%$SiC_p$-10%$C_p$ showed the highest loss factor at the mode I, while Mn-Cu alloy showed the highest loss factors at the modes II and III. Consequently, at the mode I the Al-10%$SiC_p$--10%$C_p$ showed the loss factor of 0.00093, which is 2.64 and 1.58 times higher than those of A356 and Mn-Cu alloy, respectively.

The effective elasticity and conduction of composite materials containing arbitrarily oriented multiple phases has been analyzed using the concept of orientation-dependent average fields and concentration factors. The analysis provided closed form expressions for the effective stiffnesses and conductivities. Under the prescribed boundary conditions, the concentration factors were evaluated by the equivalent inclusion principle, through which the interaction between various phases is approximated by the Mori-Tanaka mean-field approximation. SiC particulate(SiC$_{p}$) reinforce aluminum(Al) matrix composites were fabricated and their elastic constants and electrical conductivities were measured together with a careful study of their microstructure. The measured properties showed a systematic anisotropy and this behavior could be attributed to the preferred orientation of SiC$_{p}$. The theoretical model developed was applied to the computation of the anisotropic properties of these composites. Both two-phase and three-phase composites were considered based on the microstructural information. The SiC$_{p}$ was modeled as an ellipsoid with planar random orientation distribution in the extruded Al/SiC$_{p}$ composites. The effect of extraneous phase such as intermetallic compounds was also investigated.tigated.
Aluminum matrix composites strengthened by the quasi-crystalline (QC) phase were developed in the present study. The icosahedral $Al_{65}Cu_{20}Fe_{15}$ phase was produced by gravity casting and subsequent heat treatment. The mechanical milling process was utilized in order to produce the Al/QC composite powders. The microstructures of the composite powders were examined by optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The composite powders were subsequently canned, degassed and extruded in order to produce the bulk composite extrusions with various volume fractions of QC. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the extrusions were examined by OM, SEM, Vickers hardness tests and compression tests. It was found that the microstructures of the Al/QC composites were uniform and the mechanical properties could be significantly improved by the addition of the QC phase.
In this study, a new concept of aluminum-matrix composites and the possibility of in-situ processing are suggested, and preliminary results on AI- Ti system are presented. Fine powders of AI-lO% Ti were prepared by the gas atomization so that fine $Al_3Ti$ formed into flake shape. A 25v/o $Al_3Ti/Al$ composite sample was made by the powd er metallurgy process involving hot extrusion. Microstructure and mechanical behavior both at room temperature and high temperatures were analysed by OM, SEM, TEM and tension test. Microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of the composites exhibited similar behavior to those of $SiC_w/2124$ composites. Merits and drawbacks of the $Al_3Ti/Al$ composites are discussed together with a possibility of further improvement.
