  • Hypereutectic Al-Si alloys have been widely utilized for wear-resistant components in the automotive industry. In order to expand the application of Hypereutectic Al-Si alloys, the addition of alloying elements forming a stable precipitate at high temperature is required. Thermally stable inter metallic compounds can be formed through the addition of transition elements such as Fe, Ni to Al alloys. However, the amount of transition element to be added to Al alloys is limited due to their low solid solubility. Also, hypereutectic Al-Si-Fe alloys form coarse primary Si phases and needle-shaped intermetallic compounds during solidification in the general casting processes. In this study, the effects of the destruction of Intermetallic compound and Si phase are investigated via hot extrusion. Both the microstructure and mechanical properties are discussed under different extrusion conditions.

  • In the present study, the effect of microporosity on the tensile properties of as-cast AZ91D magnesium alloy was investigated through experimental observation and numerical prediction. The test specimens were fabricated by die-casting and gravity-casting. For gravity-casting, the inoculation and use of various metallic moulds were applied to obtain a wide range of microporosity. The deficiency of the interdendritic feeding of the liquid phase acted as d dominant mechanism on the formation of the micropores in the Mg-Al-alloys, rather than the evolution of hydrogen gas. Although tensile strength and elongation has a nonlinear and very intensive dependence upon microporosity, the yield strength appeared to have a linear relationship with microporosity. However, it was possible to quantitatively estimate the linear contribution of microporosity on the individual tensile property far a range of microporosity, which was below about B %. The numerical prediction suggests that the effect of microporosity on fractured strength and elongation decreased as the strain hardening exponent increased. Furthermore. the shape and distribution of micropores may play a more dominant role than local plastic deformation on the tensile behavior of AZ9lD alloy.

  • An eco-friendly production technique of Al-8.6Ti-0.025C refiner was developed by melting a Al-Ti master alloy in a graphite crucible, in which the potential nucleation site, TiC effectively formed by the spontaneous in-situ reaction between excessive Ti and carbon from graphite crucible. The A3003 alloy refined by the Al-8.6Ti-0.025C showed effectively refined macrostructure and enhanced mechanical properties comparable to the commercial Al-Ti-B refiner. The effective refinement was achieved in a shorter compare to the melt-treating time commercial Al-Ti-B refiner.

  • Microstructures and tensile properties at ambient and elevated temperatures were studied by substituting RE for Sr in Mg-6%Al-(3-X)%RE-X%Sr alloys (X = 0~3). With increasing Sr content, $Al_4Sr$ phase with lamellar morphology was newly introduced at interdendritic regions, with a gradual extinction of needle-shaped $Al_4RE$. The Mg-6%Al-3%Sr alloy shows dendritic grains and interdendritic eutectic phases containing bulky Mg-Al-Sr and lamellar $Al_4Sr$ with more continuous manner. The substitution of Sr for RE provided higher YS, UTS and creep resistance at $175^{\circ}C$, which indicates that Sr would be more beneficial in tensile properties and creep resistance at elevated temperature than RE for the Mg-Al based casting alloys.

  • The objective of this study is to develop the mechanical properties of an AlSiCu aluminum alloy using the two-step solution heat treatment. The microstructure of the gravity casting specimen represents a typical dendrite structure with a secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) of 40 um. In addition to the Al matrix, a large amount of coarsen eutectic Si phase, $Al_2Cu$ intermetallic phase, and Fe-rich phases is generated. The eutectic Si phases are fragmented and globularized with the solution heat treatment. The $Al_2Cu$ intermetallic phase is also resolutionized into the Al matrix. The $2^{nd}$ solution temperature at $525^{\circ}C$ may be an optimal condition to enhance the mechanical properties of the AlSiCu aluminum alloy.

  • The influences of a small amount of CaO addition on the microstructure and corrosion behavior of AZ81 casting alloy have been investigated by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, immersion and electrochemical tests. The added CaO led to the refinement of ${\alpha}$-Mg grains and the decrease in ${\beta}$ precipitate content by the formation of an $Al_2Ca$ phase. The AZ81-CaO alloy had a better corrosion resistance than the AZ81 alloy. The microstructural characterization on the corroded surface revealed that the enhanced corrosion resistance of the CaO-containing alloy may well be ascribed to the increased barrier effect of precipitates formed more continuously along the grain boundaries and the incorporation of Al and Ca elements into the corrosion film, by which it became more protective.

  • The inhomogeneous texture through the thickness direction can be developed during hot rolling deformation in aluminum alloy. In this study, the inhomogeneous texture evolution through the thickness direction during hot rolling deformation in Al-5 wt%Mg alloy produced by a new strip casting technology was measured experimentally. Macrotexture measurement was conducted using X-ray diffractometer. A finite element analysis with ABAQUS/StandardTM and rate sensitive polycrystal model were used to predict the evolution of hot rolling texture. The experimental results of Al-5 wt%Mg alloy were compared with calculated results. The shear texture components tend to be increased at the surface region of the hot-rolled specimen. It is found that triclinic sample symmetry is more accurate assumption for texture analysis and simulation in the surface region of hot-rolled aluminum alloy.

  • A basic heat flow model has been developed to estimate the heat transfer coefficient at the casting/mold interface during squeeze casting. Based on the measured temperature profiles in squeeze casting of Al-4.5%Si alloy, heat transfer coefficients which vary with time were calculated by numerical method. The influences of the load and the amount of fraction solid on the heat transfer coefficient have also been studied. Using the calculated heat transfer coefficient two dimensional solidification analysis in the squeeze casting process was carried out by the finite difference method, and the results were in good agreement with the experiments. It may be concluded that heat flow analysis in the squeeze casting process with accurate heat transfer coefficient at the casting /mold interface is important for a proper design of cooling in die and finally for improving productivity and die life as well.

  • In this study, the sand casting process was applied to design the gating system and perform casting simulation in order to domestically produce the submarine mast cover. Based on simulation results, casting experiments were conducted to produce a soundness prototype. The design concept of the mast cover's gating system was based on the design of bell casting. By arranging eight tower-type gates in a circle at 45° intervals, the flow of melt flowing into each gate was uniform and did not mix with each other, and the velocity of melt was also uniform. The mast cover made of Ni-Al-Bronze alloy has no unfilled parts. However, small porosities and flow marks occurred on the surface in several places. Yield strength and ultimate tensile strength are 279.3 MPa and 675.7 MPa, respectively, and elongation is 21.2%.

  • It is well known what is impossible to refine primary and eutectic Si simultaneously by addition of both Cu-P and Sr(or Na). Because of the formation of compound $Sr_3P_2(or Na_3P)$ in the melt, in the result, both effects disappear. In this study Al-Cu-P alloy that comprises AlP compounds inside is added in the melt with Sr simultaneously. As AlP compounds that act on nucleation sites of primary Si are not formed but added directly an the melt, it is difficult to form $Sr_3P_2$ by reaction with Sr. Therefore it is possible to refine primary and eutectic Si simultaneously in the general casting process by use of Al-Cu-P alloy and Sr.
