Fe-9.8Si-6.0Al mother alloy was manufactured using by Fe-3.5Si recycled scrap and Si powder. And then, soft magnetic alloy powder of $D_{50}$ size and sphere type were prepared by gas atomization process. To obtain the soft magnetic powder of a high aspect ratio, in the first, we conducted the ball milling process for 8 hours. And heat treatment was performed under $650^{\circ}C$, 2 hours and $N_2$ atmosphere condition for reducing the residual stress of the powder. Based on these process, we made around $50{\mu}m$ diameter Fe-9.8Si-6.0Al powder, which morphology and shape was a similar to the commercial Fe-Si-Al powder. Finally, the soft magnetic sheets were prepared by tape casting process using by those powders. The permeability of the tape casting sheet was measured, and we confirmed the possibility of reusing to the soft magnetic materials of Fe-Si electric sheet scrap.
Aluminum matrix composites reinforced with SiC particles(AMC) are one of the candidate materials for the weight reduction of rolling stock brake discs. It is known that weight reduction of about 40% is possible when they replace conventional cast iron brake discs. But casting is not easy because of bad wettability of SiC with Al alloy. We developed two AMC brake discs with SiC volume fraction of 20% by a new casting method. It was found the developed method produced brake discs of good quality.
Polycrystalline Al-Cu ribbons were produced by planar flow casting(PFC). Solidification behavior and microstructual changes of the ribbons have been investigated as a function of ribbon thickness and processing parameters. The solidification front velocity, V varies within the ribbon, decreasing with increasing the distance, S from the wheel-contact surface, as $V=17.6S^{-1}$. In Al-4.5wt%Cu alloy, rapid decrease in solidification velocity toward the free surface causes a change in solidification morphology from planar to cellular, and finally, to dendritic. The length and inclination of columnar grains solidified with planar front were related to the wheel velocity. The transition from particulate degenerate eutectic structure to regular lamellar eutectic structure was observed to be caused by a difference of the relative growth velocites of ${\alpha}-Al$ and ${\theta}$ during solidification in the Al-Cu eutectic alloy.
Different kinds of feedstock of semisolid a356 aluminum alloy manufactured by EMS stirring only, inoculation of Al-5Ti-B only and combination of inoculation and EMS stirring were investigated. It is found that the grain size of these feedstock are $350{\mu}m$ for EMS casting only, $320{\mu}m$ for inoculation by Al-5Ti-B, and $100{\mu}m$ for the combination of EMS stirring and inoculation of Al-5Ti-B master alloys. The microstructure of the sample obtain by combination of inoculation and EMS system show the best homogeneousness and finest grains.
Effect of Fe and Mn contents on the castability of Al-4wt%Mg-0.9wt%Si system alloy has been studied. According to the analysis of cooling curve for Al-4wt%Mg-0.9wt%Si-0.3wt%Fe-0.3/0.5wt%Mn alloy, ${\alpha}-Al_{15}(Fe,Mn)_3Si_2$ and ${\beta}-Al_5FeSi$ phases crystallized above eutectic temperature of $Mg_2Si$. Therefore, these phases affected both the fluidity and shrinkage behaviors of the alloy during solidification. As Fe and Mn contents of Al-4wt%Mg-0.9wt%Si system alloy increased from 0.1 wt% to 0.4 wt% and from 0.3 wt% to 0.5 wt% respectively, the fluidity of the alloy decreased by 26% and 33%. When Fe content of the alloy increased from 0.1 wt% to 0.4 wt%, 23% decrease of macro shrinkage and 19% increase of micro shrinkage appeared. Similarly, Mn content of the alloy increased from 0.3 wt% to 0.5 wt%, 11% decrease of macro shrinkage and 14% increase of micro shrinkage appeared. Judging from the castability of the alloy, Al-4wt%Mg-0.9wt%Si alloy with low content of Fe and Mn, 0.1 wt% Fe and 0.3 wt% Mn, is recommendable.
In this study, the effects of two different casting methods (gravity casting and, diecasting) and various solid-solution conditions on the mechanical properties of ASC (Al-10.5wt%Si-1.75wt%Cu) and ALDC12 (Al-10.3wt%Si-1.72wt%Cu-0.76wt%Fe-0.28wt% Mn-0.32wt%Mg-0.9wt%Zn) alloys were investigated. A thermodynamic solidification analysis program (PANDAT) was used to predict the liquidus, solidus, and phases of the used alloys. In the results of an XRD analysis, ${\beta}$-AlFeSi peaks were observed only in the ALDC12 alloy regardless of the casting method or SST (solid-solution treatment) conditions. However, according to the results of a FE-SEM observation, both ${\theta}(Al_2Cu)$ and ${\beta}$-AlFeSi were found to exist besides ${\alpha}$-Al and eutectic Si in the gravity-casted ASC alloy at $500^{\circ}C$ after a SST of 120min. The ${\alpha}$-AlFeSi and ${\beta}$-AlFeSi phases including the eutectic phases were also found to exist in the ALDC12 alloy. The results of a microstructural observation and analyses by XRD, FE-SEM and EDS were in good agreement with the PANDAT results. The gravity-casted ALDC12 and ASC specimens showed the highest Y.S. and UTS values after aging for three hours at $180^{\circ}C$ after a SST at $500^{\circ}C$ for 30min. At longer solid-solution treatment times at $500^{\circ}C$ in the gravity-casted ALDC12 and ASC specimens, the elongations of the ASC alloys increased, whereas they decreased slightly in the ALDC12 alloys.
Al-Ti-C grain refiner form a relatively new alternative to the existing class of Al-Ti-B type grain refiners for achieving fine equiaxed structures in aluminum alloys during casting and solidification. The present study was carried out to investigate the influence of Al-Ti-C master alloys on the grain structure of Al-7Si alloys. The present study also investigates the relationship between grain refining efficiency and concentrations of Fe and Si in hypo-eutectic Al-Si alloys using Al-3Ti-0.13C master alloys. It is found that several parameters affect significantly the grain refining performance in silumin alloys. The present study reports the influence of various parameters such as alloy content, master alloy addition level, melt holding time and superheat on the grain refining efficiency in Al-7Si alloys.
Al-5.5Zn-2.5Mg-l.5Cu semi-solid slurry was prepared by cooling the liquid metal with a low superheat to a solid and liquid co-existing temperature. Relatively round solid particles could be obtained in the slurry through the simple process. The prepared slurry was deformed into the metallic mold by a press and the mechanical properties of obtained specimens were investigated. Mold filling ability of the alloy slurry was also investigated and compared with that of A356 alloy. Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy showed lower mold filling ability than A356 alloy probably because small amount of eutectic phase is present and the heat of fusion generated during solidification is smaller than that of A356 alloy.
The morphological changes of primary solid particles as a fuction of process time on Al-Si alloys during semi-solid state processing with a shear rate of 200s were studied. In hypereutectic Al-15.5wt%Si alloy, it was observed that primary Si crystals are fragmented in the early stage of stirring and morphologies of primary Si crystals change from faceted to spherical during isothermal shearing for 60 minutes. In quaternary Al-12.5wt%Si-2.9wt%Cu-0.7wt%Mg alloy system, it was observed both primary silicon and ${\alpha}$-alumunum particles. Microstructural evolution of primary Si crystals was similar to that of the hypereutectic Al-Si alloy but equiaxed ${\alpha}$-Al dendrites are broken into nearly spherical at the early stage of shearing and later stage of the isothermal shearing ${\alpha}$- Al particles are slightly coarsoned by Ostwald ripening. Mechanical properties of Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy were compared to those from other processes (squeeze casting and gravity casting). After T6 heat treatment, comparable values of hardness were obtained while slightly lower compressive strength values were observed in rheocast alloy. The elongation, on the other hand, exhibited significant increasement of 15% over gravity cast alloy.
