Anti-oxidation coatings are the key technique for carbon/carbon (C/C) composites used as the thermal structural materials. The microstructure and oxidation behavior of several kinds of high-performance ceramic coatings for C/C composites prepared in Northwestern Polytechnical University were introduced in this paper. It showed that the ceramic coatings such as SiC, Si-$MoSi_2$, SiC-$MoSi_2$, $Al_2O_3$-mullite-SiC and SiC/yttrium silicate/glass coatings possessed excellent oxidation resistance at high temperatures, and some of these coatings were characterized with excellent thermal shock resistance. The SiC-$MoSi_2$ coating system has the best oxidation protective property, which can effectively protect C/C composites from oxidation up to 1973 K. In addition, the protection and failure reasons of some coatings at high temperature were also provided.
Mechanical properties of ($10%Al_2O_3{\cdot}SiO_2+5%Ni$)/Al hybrid composites fabricated by the reaction squeeze casting were compared with those of ($15%Al_2O_3{\cdot}SiO_2$)/Ai composites. Al-Ni intermetallic compounds ($10{\sim}20 {\mu}m$) formed by the reaction between nickel powder and molten aluminum were uniformly distributed in the Al matrix. These intermetallic compounds were identified as $Al_3Ni$ using X-ray diffraction analysis and they resulted in beneficial effects on room and high temperature strength and wear resistance. Microhardness values of ($10%Al_2O_3{\cdot}SiO_2+5%Ni$)/Al hybrid composite were greater by about 100Hv than those of ($15%Al_2O_3{\cdot}SiO_2$)/Al composite. Wear resistance of ($10%Al_2O_3{\cdot}SiO_2+5%Ni$)/Al hybrid composites was superior to that of ($15%Al_2O_3{\cdot}SiO_2$)/Al composites regardless of the applied load. While tensile and yield strength of ($10%Al_2O_3{\cdot}SiO_2+5%Ni$)/Al hybrid composites were greater at room temperature and $300^{\circ}C$, strength drop at high temperature was much smaller in hybrid composites.
Dispersion behaviors of SiC particles and microstructures in Al-2%Si/SiCp composite prepared by Rheo-compocasting were studied with change of fabrication conditions(slurry temperature, agitation time) and additions of Mg($0{\sim}3wt.%$). Also, the microhardness change of matrix, interface and total in composites were examined with additions of Mg($0{\sim}3wt.%$). The dispersion of particles in the composites became relatively homogeneous with increase of Mg additions, agitation time and decrease of slurry temperature. Rate of occupied area by particle in matrix was increased as increase of Mg additions due to improvement of wettability between SiC particle and matrix. A favorable composites were obtained by melting under Ar atmospheric SiCp injection and bottom pouring system. According to the analysis of X-ray diffraction, $Mg_2Si$, $Al_4C_3$, $SiO_2$ and MgO, etc, intermetallic compounds were formed by chemical interreaction at interface of matrix and particles. The microhardness of interface is higher than that of matrix due to more strengthening of above intermetallic compounds. It was considered that the total hardness of the composites is improved by dispersing of SiCp and addition of Mg.
The effects of volume fraction (15-30%) of SiC particulate reinforcements on the corrosion behavior of SiCp/7091 Al composites in the 3.5% NaCl solution were studied by electrochemical techniques and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the amount of SiC particulate reinforcements did not cause much difference in the corrosion behavior of SiCp/7091 Al composites but the corrosion rate was proportional to the amount of SiCp reinforcement. And numerous pits and severe dissolution of the matrix was observed probably due to the discontinuities and galvanic effects between Al matrix and SiC reinforcements.
$Al_2O_3$/SiC particulate composites were fabircated by pressureless sintering. The dispersed phase was SiC of which the content was varied from 1.0 to 10 vol%. Three SiC powders having different median diameters from 0.28 $\mu\textrm{m}$ to 1.9 $\mu\textrm{m}$ were used. The microstructure became finer and more uniform as the SiC content increased except the 10 vol% specimens, which were sintered at a higher temperature. Under the same sintering condition, densification as well as grain growth was retarded more severly when the SiC content was higher or the SiC particle size was smaller. The highest flexural strength obtained at 5.0 vol% SiC regardless of the SiC particle size seemed to be owing to the finer and more uniform microstructures of the specimens. Annealing of the specimens at $1300^{\circ}C$ improved the strength in general and this annealing effect was good for the specimens containing as low as 1.0 vol% of SiC. Fracture toughness did not change appreciably with the SiC content but, for the composites containing 10 vol% SiC, a significantly higher toughness was obtained with the specimen containing 1.9$\mu\textrm{m}$ SiC particles.
The variation of the microstructures and the mechanical properties with varying vacuum hot pressing temperature and pressure was investigated in PyM processed 20 vol%) SiCw/ 2124Al composites. As increasing the vacuum hot pressing temperature, the aspect ratio of whiskers and density of composites increased due to the softening of 2124Al matrix with the increased amount of liquid phase. The tensile strength of composite increased with increasing vacuum hot pressing temperature up to $570^{\circ}C$ and became saturated above $570^{\circ}C$, To attain the high densification of composites above 99%, the vacuum hot pressing pressure was needed to be above 70 MPa. However, the higher vacuum hot pressing pressure above 70 MPa was not effective to increase the tensile strength due to the reduced aspect ratio of SiC whiskers from damage of whiskers during vacuum hot pressing. A phenomenological equation to predict the tensile strength of $SiC_w$/2124AI composite was proposed as a function including two microstructural parameters, i.e. density of composites and aspect ratio of whiskers. The tensile strength of $SiC_w$/2124AI were found more sensitive to the porosity than other P/M materials due to the higher stress concentration and reduced load transfer efficiency by the pores locating at whisker/matrix interfaces.
The ${\beta}-SiC+ZrB_2$ ceramic composites were hot-press sintered and annealed by adding 1, 2, 3wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$(6 : 4wt%) powder as a liquid forming additives at $1950^{\circ}C$ for 4h. In this microstructures, no reactions were observed between $\beta$-SiC and $ZrB_2$, and the relative density is over 90.79% of the theoretical density and the porosity decreased with increasing $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ contents. Phase analysis of the composites by XRD revealed of $\alpha$-SiC(6H, 4H), $ZrB_2$, $Al_2O_3$ and $\beta$-SiC(15R). Flexural strength showed the highest of 315.46MPa for composites added with 3wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives at room temperature. Owing to crack deflection and crack bridging of fracture toughness mechanism, the fracture toughness showed the highest of $5.5328MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ for composites added with 2wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives at room temperature.
In order to save the energy and protect the environment, it were studied about ecomaterials with the developed countries as central figure. In the Metal Matrix Composites(MMCs), this trends appeared the development of the MMCs which had excellent mechanical properties in spite of the low volume fraction of reinforcement. Therefore, in this study, fatigue crack growth test, tensile and hardness test were conducted in order to investigate the mechanical and fatigue properties of 5 %, and 10 % $SiC_{p}$/Al composites. As the results, in the tensile and hardness test, tensile strength and hardness increased but fatigue crack growth rate decreased with $SiC_{p}$/Al volume fraction. And in the view of fatigue failured surface through the SEM, fatigue crack initiated around the SiC particle and in low $\Delta{K}$ regions, fatigue creck detoured the SiC particle but crack propagated through the SiC particle in the high $\DeltaK$ regions.
The effect of pressureless-sintered temperature on the densification behavior, mechanical and electrical properties of the $SiC-ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites was investigated. The $SiC-ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites were pressureless-sintered for 2 hours at temperatures in the range of $1,750{\sim}1,900[^{\circ}C]$, with an addition of 12[wt%] of $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$(6:4 mixture of $Al_2O_3\;and\;Y_2O_3$) as a sintering aid. The relative density and mechanical properties are increased markedly at temperatures in the range of $1,850{\sim}1,900[{^\circ}C]$. The relative density, flexural strength, vicker's hardness and fracture toughness showed the highest value of 81.1[%], 230[MPa], 9.88[GPa] and $6.05[MPa\;m^{1/2}]$ for $SiC-ZrB_2$ composites of $1,900[{^\circ}C]$ sintering temperature at room temperature respectively. The electrical resistivity was measured by the Pauw method in the temperature ranges from $25[{^\circ}C]\;to\;700[{^\circ}C]$, The electrical resistivity showed the value of $1.36{\times}10^{-4},\;3.83{\times}10^{-4},\;3.51{\times}10^{-4}\;and\; 3.2{\times}10^{-4}[{\Omega}{\cdot}cm]$ for SZ1750, SZ1800, SZ1850 and SZ1900 respectively at room temperature. The electrical resistivity of the composites was all PTCR(Positive Temperature Coefficient Resistivity). The resistance temperature coefficient showed the value of $4.194{\times}10^{-3},\;3,740{\times}10^{-3},\;2,993{\times}10^{-3},\;3,472{\times}10^{-3}/[^{\circ}C}$ for SZ1750, SZ1800, SZ1850 and SZ1900 respectively in the temperature ranges from $25[{\circ}C]\;to\;700[{\circ}C]$, It is assumed that because polycrystallines such as recrystallized $SiC-ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites, contain of porosity and In Situ $YAG(Al_5Y_3O_{12})$ crystal grain boundaries, their electrical conduction mechanism are complicated. In addition, because the condition of such grain boundaries due to $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives widely varies with sintering temperature, electrical resistivity of the $SiC-ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites with sintering temperature also varies with sintering condition. It is convinced that ${\beta}-SiC$ based electroconductive ceramic composites for heaters or ignitors can be manufactured by pressureless sintering.
The effect of pressureless-sintered temperature on the densification behavior, mechanical and electrical properties of the $SiC-TiB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites was investigated. The $SiC-TiB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites were pressureless-sintered for 2 hours at temperatures in the range of $1,750{\sim}1,900[^{\circ}C]$, with an addition of 12[wt%] $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3(6:4\;mixture\;of\;Al_2O_3\;and\;Y_2O_3)$ as a sintering aid. The relative density, flexural strength, vicker's hardness and fracture toughness showed the highest value of 84.92[%], 140[MPa], 4.07[GPa] and $3.13[MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}]$ for $SiC-TiB_2$ composites of $1,900[^{\circ}C]$ sintering temperature at room temperature respectively. The electrical resistivity was measured by the Pauw method in the temperature ranges from $25[^{\circ}C]\;to\;700[^{\circ}C]$. The electrical resistivity showed the value of $5.51{\times}10^{-4},\;2.11{\times}10^{-3},\;7.91{\times}10^{-4}\;and\;6.91{\times}10^{-4}[\Omega{\cdot}cm]$ for ST1750, ST1800, ST1850 and ST1900 respectively at room temperature. The electrical resistivity of the composites was all PTCR(Positive Temperature Coefficient Resistivity). The resistance temperature coefficient showed the value of $3.116{\times}10^{-3},\;2.717{\times}10^{-3},\;2.939{\times}10^{-3},\;3.342{\times}10^{-3}/[^{\circ}C]$ for ST1750, ST1800, ST1850 and ST1900 respectively in the temperature ranges from $25[^{\circ}C]\;to\;700[^{\circ}C]$. It is assumed that because polycrystallines, such as recrystallized $SiC-TiB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites, contain of porosity and In Situ $YAG(Al_5Y_3O_{12})$ crystal grain boundaries, their electrical conduction mechanism are complicated. In addition, because the condition of such grain boundaries due to $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives widely varies with sintering temperature, electrical resistivity of the $SiC-TiB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites with sintering temperature also varies with sintering condition.
