The mechanical and electrical properties of the hot-pressed and annealed $\beta$-SiC+39vol. %ZrB2 electroconductive ceramic composites were investigated by adding 1, 2, 3wt% Al2O3+Y2O3(6:4wt%) of the liquid forming additives. In this microstructures, no reactions were observed between $\beta-SiC$ and ZrB2. The relative density is over 90.8% of the theoretical density and the porosity decreased with increasing Al2O3+Y2O3 contents. Phase analysis of the composites by XRD revealed $\alpha-SiC(6H, 4H)$, ZrB2 and $\beta-SiC$(15R). Flexural srength showed the highest of 315.5MPa for composites added with 3wt% Al2O3+Y2O3 additives as room temperature. Owing to crack deflection and crack bridging of fracture toughness mechanism, the fracture toughness showed 5.5MPa.m1/2 and 5.3MPa.m1/2 for composites added with 2wt% and 3wt% Al2O3+Y2O3 additives respectively at room temperature. The area fraction of the elongated SiC grain in the etched surface of sample showed 65% and 65.1% for composite added with 2wt% and 3wt% Al2O3+Y2O3 additives respectively. The electrical resistivity at room temperature. The electrical resistivity of the composites wall all positive temperature coefficient(PTCR) against temperature up to $700^{\circ}C$.
The effects of porosity on the pressureless sintered $\beta$-SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites with $Al_2O_3$ additions(4, 8, 12wt.%) under argon atmosphere were investigated. Relative density of $\beta$-SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites were decreased with the $Al_2O_3$ content. The relative density and fracture toughness of $\beta$-SiC-$ZrB_2$ with 4wt% $Al_2O_3$ are 93.2%, $1.323MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ respectively. The Vicker's hardness and flexural strength of $\beta$-SiC-$ZrB_2$ with 12wt.% $Al_2O_3$ are 0.492GPa, 261MPa respectively. Fracture toughness of $\beta$-SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites are directly proportional to relative density.
Both cast and extruded composites of SiC whisker reinforced 6061 Al alloy matrix were fabricated by high pressure infiltration of the alloy melt into the SiC preform and subsequent hot extrusion of the composite ingots. The micro structures, age hardening behavior and mechanical properties have been examined on the both cast and extruded composites of SiCw/6061. The cast composites of SiCw/6061 were obtained in which SiC whiskers were randomly oriented. Hot extrusion of these cast composites lead to alignment of the whisker in the direction of extrusion. Strengthening effect of whisker in the extruded composites is lower than that of the cast composites. The cast composites of SiCw/6061 showed higher thensile strength and lower elongation than extruded composites of SiCw/6061 at all testing temperatures. Lower tensile strength and higher elongation of the extruded composites were attributable to fine grain structures in which grain boundary sliding occruued preferentially at elevated temperatures.
Fracture surfaces of materials contain useful information ranging from crack path to the mechanism of fracture. Since limitation of electron transparency requires a sample in the form of thin foil for TEM observations, it is impossible to extract such information directly from the fracture surfaces. In this study, the method of surface replication from the ceramic fracture surface is employed to characterize the process of crack propagation in ceramic matrix composites using TEM analysis. The surface replica from the fracture surface in ceramic materials provides detailed surface morphology and more importantly, loosened particles on the fracture surface are collected. Electron diffraction and chemical composition analyses of these particles reveal crack path in the specimen. Furthermore, one can determine the mode of fracture by observing the fracture surface morphology from the image of replica. Two examples are given to illustrate the potential of the surface replication technique. In the first example, apparent toughness increase in $B_{4}C-Al$ composites at high strain rate is investigated by surface replication to elucidate the mechanism of fracture at different strain rates. The polytypes of SiC formed during the sintering of SiC-AlN composite and their effect on the fracture behavior of SiC-AlN composite are analyzed in the second example.
The composites were fabricated 61Vo.% ${\beta}$-SiC and 39Vol.% $TiB_2$ powders with the liquid forming additives of 12wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_{3}$ as a sintering aid by pressure or pressureless annealing at $1650^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. The present study investigated the influence of annealed sintering on the microstructure and mechanical of SiC-$TiB_2$ electroconductmive ceramic composites. Reactions between SiC and transition metal $TiB_2$ were not observed in the microstructure and the phase analysis of the SiC-$TiB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites. Phase analysis of SiC-$TiB_2$ composites by XRD revealed mostly of ${\alpha}$-SiC(6H), $TiB_2$, and In Situ YAG($Al_{5}Y_{3}O_{12}$). The relative density, the flexural strength, the Young's modulus showed the highest value of 86.69[%], 136.43[MPa], 52.82[GPa] for pressure annealed SiC-$TiB_2$ ceramic composites.
Hot restoration mechanism flow stress and stain of the Al2024 composites reinforced with 1,8,15,36, and $44{\mu}m\;SiC_p$(10 vol. %) were studied by hot torsion tests. The hot restoration mechanism of all the composites was found to be dynamic recrystallization(DRX) at $320^{\circ}C$ while that of the composites reinforced with 1 and $8{\mu}m\;SiC_p$ was found to be dynamic recovery(DRX) at $480^{\circ}C$. It was found that the Al2024 composite with $15{\mu}m\;SiC_p$ showed the highest flow stress(${\sim}$223 MPa) at $320^{\circ}C$ under a strain rate of 1.0/sec. Also the highest flow strain of the composites was obtained at $430^{\circ}C$. The com-posites reinforced with 1 and $8{\mu}m\;SiC_p$ showed lower flow stress and higher flow strain at $480^{\circ}C$ than those of the composites reinforced with 15, 36, and $44\;{\mu}m\;SiC_p$ These result were discussed in relation to the transition of the hot restoration mechanism. $DRX{\leftrightarrow}DRV$. The dependence of flow stress on strain rate and temperature was attempted to fit with the hyperbolic sine equation ($\dot{\varepsilon}=A[sinh({\alpha}{\cdot}{\sigma}_p]^n$ exp(-Q/RT)and Zener-Hollomon parameter($Z=\;\dot{\varepsilon}\;exp(Q/RT))$.

A theoretical model is applied to the analysis of thermomechanical properties of $Al-SiC_p$ FGMs in this study. Functionally graded $Al-SiC_p$ composites ($Al-SiC_p$ FGMs) consisted with 10 layers gradually changing volume fractions of Al and $SiC_p$ were fabricated using the pressureless infiltration technique. $Al-SiC_p$ FGMs plates of total thickness of 3mm, 5mm and 7mm with fairly uniform distribution and compositional gradient of $SiC_p$ reinforcement in the Al matrix throughout the thickness was successfully fabricated. The curvature of $Al-SiC_p$ FGM plates was measured to check the internal stress distribution predicted via a theoretical model for the analysis of thermo-mechanical deformation. The evolution of curvature and also internal stresses in response to temperature variations could be predicted for the different combinations of geometric thickness of FGM plates. Theoretical prediction of thermally induced stress distribution makes it possible to design FGM structures without any critical failure during the usage of them.
Three types of dispersed, coated and mechanically mixed SiC reinforced Al2O3 composite powders were used to investigate the effect of composite powder type on sintering characteristics and properties of Al2O3-SiC composites. Sinterability of coated type composite powders was superior to that of other composite powders when they were pressureless sintered at 1500~1$700^{\circ}C$ for 2h in Ar atmosphere. However, sinterabilities (>98% TD) of each type of composite powders were similar when they were hot pressed at 180$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h under 30MPa in N2 atmosphere. SiC powders were randomly distributed in the specimen prepared from dispersed type composite powders, whereas homogeneously distributed for coated type specimens. It was found that SiC powders inhibited the grain growth of Al2O3, and fracture toughness was increased by the increment of crack growth resistance due to residual stress by secondary SiC particles within Al2O3 grains.
Al2O3/Al composites were produced by displacement reaction method which was carried out by imm-ersing the sintered silica preform which was prepared form fused silica powder in molten aluminu. an ac-tivation energy of 94kJ/mole was calculated from Al-SiO2 reaction data in 1000-130$0^{\circ}C$ temperature range With increase of reaction temperature the alumina particle in the Al2O3/Al composites produced with pur metal Al showed grain growth and the growth of alumina particle in Al2O3/Al composite produced by using of Mg contained Al alloy was inhibited. The flexural strength of Al2O3/Al composites produced at 100$0^{\circ}C$ showed the highest value as 393 MPa. Flexural strength of the composite fabricated at 85$0^{\circ}C$ showed higher deviation than that of the composite produced at above 100$0^{\circ}C$ Low flexural strength of the composite fa-bricated at 120$0^{\circ}C$ due to the growth of pore and alumina particle size. The hardness of composites de-pended on alumina content in Al2O3/Al composite decreased with increasing of aluminium content in case the same alumina content and increased with increasing of silicon content in composite.
