  • The Regulatory Guide 1.82 recommends an analysis of hydraulic performance for sump of ECCS (Emergency Core Cooing System) when LOCA(Loss of Coolant Accident) occurs in a nuclear power plant. The present study deals with 3-dimensional, unsteady, turbulent and two-phase flow simulation to examine the behavior of mixture of reactor coolant and debris near the floor of containment building in conjunction with appropriate assumptions. The dispersed solid model has been adjusted to the interfacial momentum transfer between reactor coolant and debris. According to the results, the counterclockwiserecirculation zone had been formed in the region between sump and connection aisle about 376 second after LOCA occurs. The debris thickness accumulated on a sump screen periodically increases or decreases up to 2000 second, afterwards its peak decreases.

  • This paper considers the workforce assignment problem to minimize both the deviations of workloads assigned to workers and to maximize the total preference between each worker and each machine. Because of the high expense of technology education and the difficulties of firing employees, there is no part time workers in semiconductor industry. Therefore, multi-skilled workers are trained for performing various operations in several machines. The bicriteria workforce assignment problem in this paper is not easy to obtain the optimal solution considering the aisle structure and it is belong to NP-class. The proposed heuristic algorithms are developed based on the combination of spacefilling curve technique, simulated annealing technique and graph theory focusing on the multiple-row machine layout. Examples are presented for the proposed algorithms how to find a good solution.

  • There are numerous crashed deaths or near-miss accidents in everywhere. The outbreak place is not just developing countries such as India and Iran, but also leading countries including Japan and German. The crashed death of pedestrian seems to be an unavoidable accident. However, it was revealed in social psychology field that the accident can be treated as a kind of physical phenomenon. In this study, we apply discrete element method frequently used in the field of two-phase flow to pedestrian flow with collective behavior psychology. This approach is a field of social science and physics, called computational sociology. The acquired results show that emergency exit size can be related with the wall slope of the exit.

  • One of the significant problems in urban areas is lack of parking spaces. Therefore, maximizing the number of cars that can be parked in a given area becomes increasingly important as land costs increase. This paper presents a methodology of optimal parking lot design in relatively small areas. The discussion is limited to self-parking surface rectangular lots. The selection of stall dimensions and aisle widths is based on the regulations of parking lot design standards of Korea. A personal computer software, OPALD, was developed and implemented to design optimal parking lots. OPALD iterates angles of parking stalls from 45 to 90 degree, generates the combination of paring angles, and selects the best angles to fit the given area. A drawing data file is also generated to draw layouts of parking lots in the CAD pakage (AutoCAD). Application of OPALD shows good results to design parking lots in relatively small areas. By-products of this research represents the parking modules of various angles.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate its characteristics of the spatial compositions at several kindergartens in Daegu area. Through this, the study is intended to provide the basic data of the efficient building planning and facility operations in the kindergarten. The results of this study are as follows. 1) Recently, the spatial compositions of kindergarten was classified as education, educational aids, educational support, teacher / administration, and public service area. 2) The concept of special classroom space was set up in all the surveyed facilities. This space was used for small-scale events, meals, and game features. 3) Support staff, including teachers, are insufficient for the service space. 4) The size of total land area of the facility's public service area was affecting. 5) The Lobby and aisle space of the surveyed facilities was used as a multipurpose space. 6) In response to diverse educational content, the direction to plan should be seperated by multi-space.

  • The assorting process in distribution center is one of the most difficult and time-consuming process. The improvement of assorting productivity is a core element which decides efficiency of a distribution center. The time to shipping from receiving depends on assorting such as sorting by customer. To enhance efficiency of assorting typically uses the put to light system composed of computer and digital indicator etc. Generally the layout of put to light system has been performed rather than scientific analysis by a common experience. Therefore, this study analyzes the impact of assorting performance by the number of aisle in assorting process of put to light system.

  • In this study, it was analyzed by a numerical analysis that plan/design considerations for ensuring the spectator safety of large arena audiences in a fire emergency evacuation plan. The latest issue, the 'performance-based design', fire and evacuation plan is important. But nowadays 'Specification-based design' is in common. In evacuation simulation, congestion of exit and aisle is ignored because only evacuation time of large-space is mainly analyzed. In smoke flow,'smoke filling effect' tends to be overrated. From now on, when design a field house, it is needed not 'smoke filling effect' and 'large-space evacuation' analysis, but analyzing 'whole building evacuation time' for ensuring fire evacuation safety of spectator.

  • The objective of this study is mainly related to design aspects of Multi-aisle S/R machine system (MASS) which can substantially reduce high initial investment cost of Automated Storage/Retrieval System. Firstly, the average travel time of the S/R machine is determined under single and dual commands, from which the average performance of S/R machine is evaluated. Secondly, a design model is developed and the system parameters, such as length and height of the system, and the number of S/R machines, traversers and aisles are determined which provide minimum initial investment and operating costs. Also, through experiments, sensitivity analysis is made for the throughput and storage volume.

  • Most of studies on automated storage/retrieval (AS/R) system assumed that storage capacity is given, although it is a very important decision variable in the design phase. We propose a simple algorithm to estimate the required storage capacity, i.e., number of aisles and number of openings in vertical and horizontal directions in each aisle, of an AS/R system under stochastic demand, in which storage requests occur endogenously and exogenously while the retrieval requests occur endogenously from the machines. Two design criteria, maximum permissible overflow probability and maximum allowable storage/retrieval (S/R) machine utilization, are used to compute the storage capacity. This model can be effectively used in the design phase of new AS/R systems.
