  • This paper presents research on methods for the reduction of forklifts' noise level for the increased comfort and safety of its operator. A cooling fan with a high air volume flow rate installed in the forklift acts as an important design parameter which efficiently cools the heat exchanger system, helping to transfer internal heat from the engine room to the outdoors with both transmitted and diffracted opening noises. The cooling fan contributes significantly to both the forklift's emitted sound power and the operator room's noise level, thereby necessitating research on the forklift's reduction of acoustic power level and transmission. A noise analysis for various fan models with a biomimetic design based on eagle-wing geometry was conducted. In addition to the acoustic power generation, the aerodynamic performance of the cooling blade is also strongly influenced by the design of airfoil distribution, thereby requiring optimization. The cooling fans were fabricated and installed in the forklift in order to check the efficacy of the forklift engine's cooling, and the final version of the fan was measured for its ability to lower acoustic power level and cool the engine room. This study explains the aerodynamic and acoustic features of the designed fans with the use of BEM analysis and forklift test results.

  • The aerodynamic stability of orthotropic tensioned membrane structures with rectangular plane is theoretically studied under the uniform ideal potential flow. The aerodynamic force acting on the membrane surface is determined by the potential flow theory in fluid mechanics and the thin airfoil theory in aerodynamics. Then, based on the large amplitude theory and the D'Alembert's principle, the interaction governing equation of wind-structure is established. Under the circumstances of single mode response, the Bubnov-Galerkin approximate method is applied to transform the complicated interaction equation into a system of second order nonlinear differential equation with constant coefficients. Through judging the stability of the system characteristic equation, the critical divergence instability wind velocity is determined. Finally, from different parametric analysis, we can conclude that it has positive significance to consider the characteristics of orthotropic and large amplitude for preventing the instability destruction of structures.

  • In the present study, a grid deformation technique has been incorporated into the unsteady compressible and incompressible viscous flow solvers on unstructured hybrid meshes. An algebraic method based on the basis decomposition of normal edge vector was used for the deformation of viscous elements, and a ball-vertex spring analogy was adopted for inviscid elements among several spring analogy methods due to its robustness. The present method was validated by comparing the results obtained from the grid deformation and the rigid motion of entire grids. Fish swimming motion of an NACA0012 airfoil and flapping wing motion of a generic fighter were simulated to demonstrate the robustness of the present grid deformation technique.

  • An implicit discontinuous Galerkin method for the two-dimensional Euler equations was developed on unstructured triangular meshes. The method can achieve high-order spatial accuracy by using hierachical basis functions based on Legendre polynomials. Numerical tests were conducted to estimate the convergence order of numerical solutions to the Ringleb flow and the supersonic vortex flow for which analytic solutions are available. Also, the flows around a 2-D circular cylinder and an NACA0012 airfoil were numerically simulated. The numerical results showed that the implicit discontinuous Galerkin methods couples with a high-order representation of curved solid boundaries can be an efficient method to obtain very accurate numerical solutions on unstructured meshes.

  • This paper describes aerodynamic heating on a hypersonic vehicle. For this purpose, the 2-D, and 3-D equilibrium code are developed. In order to obtain an accurate solution, AUSMPW+ is used for spatial discretization. Curve fitting data in NASA Reference Publication 1181, 1260 are used to calculate equilibrium properties. To observe aerodynamic heating phenomena, Reynolds number parametric study for diamond airfoil is done, 3-D full Navier-Stokes equation is computed and wall temperature distribution data are obtained. Analyzing these results, we conclude that Reynolds number and secondary flow are important factors in aerodynamic heating.

  • Numerical stud of an oscillating body in incompressible fluid is performed. Stabilized finite element method comprising of Streamline-Upwind/Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) and Pressure-Stabilizing/Petrov-Galerkin (PSPG) formulations of linear triangular elements was employed to solve 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations whereas the motion of the body was considered by incorporating the arbitrary Langrangian-Eulerian(ALE) formulation. An algebraic moving mesh strategy is utilized for obtaining body conforming mesh deformation at each time step. Two tests cases, namely motion of a circular cylinder and of an airfoil in incompressible flow were analyzed. The model is first validated against the stationary cases and then the capability to handle moving boundaries is demonstrated.

  • In order to analyze the periodic unsteady flow problem efficiently the partially implicit harmonic balance (PIHB) method was developed. Contrary to the existing harmonic balance method, this method handles the harmonic source term explicitly and deals with flux terms implicitly. This method has a good convergence in comparison with the full explicit harmonic method and it is easy to apply this method because there is no need to calculate the complicated flux Jacobian term by comparing with the full implicit harmonic method. With the multigrid method about the each harmonic it turns out that this method has a good convergence regardless of the number of harmonics. The oscillating flows over NACA0012 airfoil is considered to verify this method then the result correponsed to both the result of dual time stepping and explicit Runge-Kutta method.

  • The unsteady turbulent flow characteristics of NACA4406 airfoil at close proximity to the pound are numerically investigated, especially focused on the noise generation mechanism near the blunt trailing edge. The unsteady two-dimensional compressible Wavier-Stokes equations with a Spalart-Allmaras turbulence closure model are solved by the 6th-order compact scheme and the 4th-order Runge-Kutta scheme. The computation shows a noise generation by a feedback mechanism at the blunt tailing edge, where the acoustic-fluidic coupling occurs between the wall-reflected sound waves and the periodically disturbed turbulent shear layer.
