  • The purpose of this study was to develop of the smoke flow visualization device of learning wind tunnel, teaching-learning materials in order to demonstrate air-flow around the fluid-flow field qualitatively and understand the resistance concepts of fluid-flow in secondary school. The contents of this study were consisted of the development and experiment of smoke flow visualization for learning wind tunnel. The main results of this study were as follows: First, this developed teaching-learning material here will help students understand the fundamental physical phenomena related with the resistance of fluid and the various patterns of air-flow in the field of transportation technology. Second, flow visualization has shown the same tendency in both of theoretical and experimental patterns. Third, the airfoil model has the smallest wake region meaning resistance against air-flow of circular cylinder and square rod model. Forth, flow separation point at leading edge and wide wake region began to show under the angle of attack of airfoil model ${\alpha}$ is $20^{\circ}$. Fifth, the wake width of the flow field behind a golf ball with dimple became slightly narrower than that without dimple. Sixth, the developed device was made to apply the teaching and learning materials for the experiment and practice in order to increase students' interest and attitude.

  • Flow velocity changes in the shroud system for tidal current power generation due to experimental flow velocities and blade geometry changes were analyzed by hydraulic experiment and numerical simulation. Through the hydraulic experiment, flow velocities at inlet of shroud system and RPM according to blade geometry were measured, and numerical simulation was used to analyze flow velocity changes in shroud. When the experimental flow velocity was increased by about 28% and the shape of the airfoil was applied, the measured flow velocity at the shroud inlet tended to increase by up to about 56%. On the other hand, when airfoil-shaped blades were installed, the flow velocity at the inlet tended to increase by up to 14% compared to conventional blades, and RPM was also the highest at the same conditions. The hydraulic experiment and numerical simulation results showed an error of about 13%, and the trends of the flow velocity changes in each result are similar. Numerical simulation of the flow velocity changes in the shroud showed that the flow velocity tended to increase 1.7 times at the front of the blade compared to the inlet. The results of the flow velocity change analysis in the shroud system obtained from this study will provide the basic data necessary for the development of efficient shroud system for tidal current power generation.

  • A numerical study is performed to investigate the interaction between subsonic axial turbine blade boundary layer and periodically oncoming rotor induced wakes. An implicit scheme for solving the compressible Navier-Stokes equation is developed, which adopts a 4th-order compact difference for spatial discretiztion, a 2nd order Crank-Nicolson scheme for temporal discretization and the dynamic eddy viscosity model as the subgrid scale model. The efficiency and the accuracy of the proposed method are verified by applying to some benchmark problems such as laminar cylinder flow, laminar airfoil cascade flow and a transitional flat plate boundary layer flow. Computational results show good agreements with previous experimental and numerical results. Finally, flow through a stator cascade is simulated at $Re = 7.5{\times}10^5$ without free-stream turbulence intensity. The velocity fields and skin friction coefficients in the transitional region show similar trends with previous boundary layer natural transition.

  • In the present paper, transition turbulence model is applied to the NACA64(3)618 and detailed flow features are studied. The turbulence model is sensitive to the boundary layer grid quality and y+ of the grid was limited to 1. The prediction of the transition region is dependent on the local flow condition. The pressure coefficient distribution of the transition turbulence model is compared with that of the fully turbulent mode and the drag distribution of the transition turbulence model was compared with that of the wind tunnel test.

  • The velocity and pressure fields of a ship's Weis-Fogh type propulsion mechanism are studied in this paper using an advanced vortex method. The wing (NACA0010 airfoil) and channel are approximated by source and vortex panels. and free vortices are introduced away from the body surfaces. The viscous diffusion of fluid is represented using the core-spreading model to the discrete vortices. The velocity is calculated on the basis of the generalized Biot-Savart law and the pressure field is calculated from an integral, based on the instantaneous velocity and vorticity distributions in the flow field. Two-dimensional unsteady viscous flow calculations of this propulsion mechanism are shown. and the calculated results agree qualitatively with the measured thrust and drag due to un-modeled large fluctuations in the measured data.

  • An evaluation of one zero-equation and two one-equation eddy viscosity-transport turbulence closure models as implemented CFDS(Characteristic Flux Difference Splitting ) code is presented herein. Comparisons of Baldwin-Lomax model as zero-equation and Baldwin-Barth and Spalart-Allmaras model as one-equation are presented for three test cases, first inlvolving the 3 dimensional supersonic flow at M=1.98 over tangent ogive cylinder, second involving the 2 dimensional transonic flow at M=0.79 over RAE 2822 airfoil, third involving the 3 dimensional transonic flow at M=0.84 over ONERA M6 wing. The numerical results of CFDS code will also examined through direct comparison with experimental data.

  • Flow control has been performed using synthetic jet on NACA23012. In order to improve aerodynamic performance, synthetic jet is located near separation paint on airfoil with leading edge droop and plain flap. The flow control using synthetic jet shows that stall characteristics and control surface performance can be improved through resizing separation vortices. Stall is delayed and stall characteristics are improved when synthetic jet is applied from separation region of leading edge droop. Control surface effectiveness is increased and lift is increased when synthetic jet applied at the flap leading edge region. The results show that aerodynamic characteristics can be improved through leading edge droop with synthetic jet at near separation and plain flap with synthetic jet at the flap leading edge. The combination of synthetic jet and simple high lift device is as good as fowler flap system.

  • An unstructured overset mesh method has been developed for the simulation of unsteady viscous flow fields around multiple bodies in relative motion. For this purpose, a robust and fast search technique is proposed for both triangle and high-aspect quadrilateral cell elements. The interpolation boundary is defined for data communication between grid systems and an interpolation method is suggested for viscous and inviscid cell elements. This method has been applied to calculate the flow fields around 2-D airfoil including relative motion. Validation were made by comparing the predicted results with those of experiments or other researcher's numerical results. It was demonstrated that the present method is efficient and robust for the prediction of unsteady time-accurate flow fields involving multiple bodies in relative motion.

  • The aerodynamics of the Wells turbine has been studied using a 3-dimensional, unstructured mesh flow solver for the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The basic feature of the Wells turbine is that even though the cyclic airflow produces oscillating axial forces on the airfoil blades, the tangential force on the rotor is always in the same direction. Geometry used to define the 3-dimensional numerical grid is based upon that of an experimental test rig. The 3-dimensional Wells turbine model, consisting of approximate 220,000 cells is tested at four axial flow rates. In the calculations the angle of attack has been varied between $10^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$ of blades. Representative results from each case are presented graphically and analyzed. It is concluded that this method holds much promise for future development of Wells turbines.

  • A two-dimensional hybrid flaw solver has been developed for the accurate and efficient simulation of steady and unsteady flaw fields. The flow solver was cast to accommodate two different topologies of computational meshes. Triangular meshes are adopted in the near-body region such that complex geometric configurations can be easily modeled, while adaptive Cartesian meshes are, utilized in the off-body region to resolve the flaw more accurately with less numerical dissipation by adopting a spatially high-order accurate scheme and solution-adaptive mesh refinement technique. A chimera mesh technique has been employed to link the two flow regimes adopting each mesh topology. Validations were made for the unsteady inviscid vol1ex convection am the unsteady turbulent flaws over an NACA0012 airfoil, and the results were compared with experimental and other computational results.
