The resistance to the passage of airflow through various agricultural products is an important consideration in the design of an aeration or drying system. The amount of resistance to airflow varied widely from one kind of grain to another, and depended upon airflow rate, surface texture and shape of the particles, the size and configuration of voids, and foreign and fine material in the grain bed. The airflow rate was the major factor considered on this kind of study in the early stages. But these days, the studies on the resistance to airflow of grain affected by grain moisture content and foreign and fine material have been widely carried out. However the foreign an fine material in the grain bed could not be a major factor on the study in Korea because there were only a few grain process procedure after harvesting it. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of moisture content and airflow rate on airflow resistance to grain, and to develop a model to predict the static pressure drop across the grain bed as a function of moisture content and airflow rate. The rough rice varieties, Akibare, Milyang 15 (Japonica types), Samkwang, Backyang (Indica types)and covered barley variety, Olbori, which were harvested in 1985 were used in the experiment after cleaning them. Resistances to airflow of grain were investigated at four levels of moisture content (13-25%, wb.) for ten different airflow rates($0.01-0.15m^3/sm^2$). The results of this study are summarized as follows; 1. Theaverage bulk densities were $585.3kg/m^3$ for rough rice and $691.6kg/m^3$ for barley at the loose fill, and were $648.8kg/m^3$ for rough rice and $758.2kg/m^3$ for barley at the packed fill. The pressure drops at the packed fill beds were approximately 1.4 to 1.8 times higher than those at the loose fill beds. 2. The pressure drops across grain beds deceased with the increase of moisture content and increased with airflow rate. The decreasing rates of pressure drop across grain beds according to the moisture contents at the lower airflow rates were higher than those at the higher airflow rates, and the increasing rates of pressure drop according to the airflow rates at the lower moisture contents were higher those at higher moisture contents. 3. The pressure drop across barley bed were much higher than rough rice beds and the pressure drops across Japonica type rough rice beds were a little higher than Indica type. 4. The mathematical models to predict the pressure drop across grain beds as a function of moisture content and airflow rate were developed from these experiments.
In pressure cooling system, produce were packed in vented box and cooled rapidly by producing a difference in air pressure on opposite faces of stacks of vented box. So, energy requirements and performance of pressure cooling system depended upon the air flow rate and the static pressure drop through packed produce in vented box. The static pressure drop across packed produce in vented box normally depended upon air flow rate, vent area of box and conditions of produce bed (depth, porosity, stacking patterns, size and shape of products) in box. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of vent area and air flow rate on airflow resistance of empty box and packed produce in vented box, and to investigate the relationship between the air flow resistance of packed products in vented box and sum of air flow resistance of empty box only and products in bulk only. Mandarins and tomatoes were used in the experiment. The airflow rate were in the range of 0.02~1.0$m^3$/s.$m^2$, the opening ratio of vent hole were in the range of 2.5~20% of the side area. The results were summerized as follows. 1. The pressure drops across vented box increased in proportion to superficial air velocity and decreased in proportion to opening ratio of vent hole. A regression equation to calculate airflow resistance of vented box was derived as a function of superficial air velocity and opening ratio of vent hole. 2. The pressure drops across packed produce in vented box increased in proportion to superficial air velocity and decreased in proportion to opening ratio of vent hole. 3. Because of the air velocity increase in the vicinity of vent hole in box, the airflow resistances of packed products in vented box were always higher than sum of air flow resistance of empty box only and products in bulk only. 4. Based on the airflow resistance of empty box and products in bulk, a regression equation to calculate airflow resistance of packed products in vented box was derived.

The ISO 9053, acoustics - materials for acoustical applications - determination of airflow resistance was reviewed in order to make it as a KS and the basic contents were introduced. The measurement apparatus according to ISO 9053 were made and tested.
This study evaluated whether substantial airflow resistance changes occurred by changing jaw position in normal and snoring subjects. A case-control design was utilized to assess group differences. Subjects included 11 snoring patients and 10 non-snoring subjects. Airway resistance was assessed using a whole body plethysmograph. Subjects in this study had their mouth opening standardized to a position of 7 mm of vertical separation and the resistance was measured under the following conditions; normal jaw position and 2/3 maximum protrusive jaw position. The results were as follows : 1. The airway resistance was higher in snoring group than in non-snoring group. 2. Both groups had a significant decrease in their airflow resistance upon jaw protrusion. In conclusion, these data document that airflow resistance can be significantly influenced by jaw positioning. Moving the jaw in a protrusive position produced reduction of resistance.
Background: Airway resistance(Raw) is measured with the body plethysmograph by displaying the relationship between airflow and alveolar pressure($V/P_A$). If the resistance curve on $V/P_A$ tracing is curved or looped, the estimation of Raw is difficult. This study was designed to examine wheather there is any correlation between the shape of resistance curve and the clinical status and the pulmonary function of patients. Methods: The 146 pulmonary disease patients with increased Raw were included in this study. The shapes of resistance curves on $V/P_A$ tracing with body plethysmograph during quiet breathing were analyzed and compared with pulmonary function. Results: The results were as follows ; 1) The shapes of resistance curves were summarized in 5 categories; type 1: linear, type 2: ovoid, type 3: sigmoid, type 4: scoop, type 5: paisley. The type 3 except 1 case, type 4 and type 5 were found to have loop mainly in expiratory phase. 2) Although the shapes of resistance curves were not typical for specific disease, the resistance curves of acute disease tended to belong to type 1 or 2 and those of chronic airflow obstruction tended to belong to type 3, 4 or 5. But resistance curves of bronchial asthma and destructive lung with tuberculosis showed all types in proportion to degree of airflow obstruction or destruction of parenchyme. 3) In the cases of resistance curves going to type 5 rather than type 1 and those with looping, airflow obstuction tended to be severe and airway resistance and residual volume tended to increase. Conclusions: Analysis of resistance curve on $V/P_A$ tracing measuring airway resistance is helpful for judging degree of airflow obstruction and air trapping. Although the shape of resistance curve is not typical for specific disease, there is a close association between looping and airway obstruction.

Experimental were conducted to obtain information on the effect of airflow rates and bed depths on the resistance of coffee cherries and coffee beans available locally (Coffea Liberica). The airflow used were in the range of 0.06 to 0.6 cu. m/s-sq.m. The moisture content of the coffee cherries ranged from 10 % to 50% (wet basis) and that of coffee beans ranged from 12% to 30% )wet basis). Two methods of filling were used i.e. loose fill and packed fill. Pressure drops across the material bed in a vertical column were measured at several depths using inclined manometer. The pressure drop increased directly with air flow rate as well as bed depths. The effects of air flowrates and moisture contents on the resistance in terms of pressure drip per unit bed depth were analysed. The pressure drop per unit depth across the material bed varied slightly due to different depth. The resistance to airflow decreased with the increase in moisture content for loose fill. However, the effect of moisture content is not apparent for packed fill.
This study was designed to analyze normal nasal respiratory resistance in prepubertal children. The subjects consisted of 30 prepubertal children (male: 15, female: 15). The mean age was 11.4 years in male children and 11.5 years in female children. The results were as follows: I. The normal nasal respiratory patency was lower than the normal values from RION corp. 2. The normal nasal respiratory airflow rates showed no sexual differences. And there were no differences between inspiration and expiration. 3. Before and after use of nasal decongestants, there were no significant differences of normal nasal respiratory airflow rates and after the administration of nasal decongestants, nasal respiratory patency manifested lower variability. 4. The normal nasal respiratory resistance without nasal decongestants at 150 Pascal in inspiration was $0.30Pa/cm^3/sec({\pm}0.07)$ and peak nasal inspiratory airflow rate was $1016.83cm^3/sec({\pm}223.89)$. 5. The normal nasal respiratory resistance with nasal decongestant at 150 Pascal in inspiration was $0.25Pa/cm^3/sec({\pm}0.05)$ and peak nasal inspiratory airflow rate was $1148.33cm^3/sec({\pm}234.29)$.
The interest and purpose of this study is to control of air-fuel ratio and develop control device of a spark ignition LPG engine with adopting open loop fuel system. The air-fuel ratio is derived by considering airflow resistane of air cleaner element. The result shows that air-fuel ratio becomes more and more rich when airflow resistance increases. Experiments about the influence of airflow resistance on the engine performance, drivability and emissions are performed. Therefore, it is known that open-loop fuel system depends on the absorbing resistance of air-cleaner.
Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) on changes in airflow in the upper airway (UA) of an adult patient with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) using computational fluid-structure interaction analysis. Methods: Three-dimensional UA models fabricated from cone beam computed tomography images obtained before (T0) and after (T1) MARPE in an adult patient with OSAS were used for computational fluid dynamics with fluid-structure interaction analysis. Seven and nine cross-sectional planes (interplane distance of 10 mm) in the nasal cavity (NC) and pharynx, respectively, were set along UA. Changes in the cross-sectional area and changes in airflow velocity and pressure, node displacement, and total resistance at maximum inspiration (MI), rest, and maximum expiration (ME) were investigated at each plane after MARPE. Results: The cross-sectional areas at most planes in NC and the upper half of the pharynx were significantly increased at T1. Moreover, airflow velocity decreased in the anterior NC at MI and ME and in the nasopharynx and oropharynx at MI. The decrease in velocity was greater in NC than in the pharynx. The airflow pressure in the anterior NC and entire pharynx exhibited a decrease at T1. The amount of node displacement in NC and the pharynx was insignificant at both T0 and T1. Absolute values for the total resistance at MI, rest, and ME were lower at T1 than at T0. Conclusions: MARPE improves airflow and decreases resistance in UA; therefore, it may be an effective treatment modality for adult patients with moderate OSAS.

For the first time, airflow in the nasal cavity of a normal Korean adult is investigated experimentally by PIV measurement. Nasal airflow can be subdivided into two interrelated categories; nasal airflow resistance and heat and mass transfer between the air stream and the walls of the nasal cavity. In this study, thanks to a new method for the model casting by a combination of the rapid prototyping and curing of clear silicone. a transparent rectangular box containing the complex nasal cavity can be made fur PIV experiments. The CBC PIV algorithm is used for analysis. Average and RMS distributions are obtained for inspirational and expiration nasal airflows. Data fer the airflow at the end of meatuses are obtained for the first time. Comparisons between western and Korean nasal airflows are appreciated. Due to the difference in geometry of the frontal part of nasal cavity, the flow near nares shows the difference.
