  • Sensor pods mounted on the exterior of the aircraft used for tactical missions should have a fatigue life based on the expected load spectrum during operation. For mission equipment such as the sensor pod, the frequency fatigue life prediction method which applies the dynamic vibration environment condition is preferred due to the efficiency of the analysis. In this paper, a fatigue life prediction method in the frequency domain where stress due to static and dynamic loads is synthesized based on the actual flight load spectrum is proposed. After comparison with the existing analysis method, the fatigue life of the proposed analysis method was predicted conservatively. The proposed sensor pods satisfy the requirements of the fatigue life.

  • Aircraft battery is the core equipment of an aircraft that supplies engine starting power and emergency power, and it must be charged to ensure sufficient capacity at all times and maintain high reliability to ensure stable power supply. The battery of the T-50 series aircraft is designed to enable the engine to start up to two times in temperatures as low as -18℃ and above. However, intermittent failures in engine starting have been observed during winter. In this paper, we analyze the failure phenomena occurring during low-temperature charging of the battery and improve the charging algorithm based on the analysis and test. Additionally, the results of start simulation tests show that the battery charging defects at low temperatures are resolved, and an improvement in the charging performance is confirmed; thus, validating the effectiveness of the new algorithm.

  • Sheet metal forming with hydraulic counter-pressure has several advantages compared with conventional drawing, such as higher forming limits, higher accuracy of formed parts and the achievement of complicated formed shapes. About 50 special press machines have already been used in Japan for manufacturing lighting reflectors, aircraft parts and automobile parts. This report descirbes the techniques and the equipment used in the application of process.

  • Board bridges are one of the most important structural components of the airport ground equipment. Passenger boarding bridges will be installed to provide enclosed passengers for persons moving between aircraft loading doors and second story terminal gates. In order to the understand of boarding bridge, type and structural components are investigated and analyzed by using the commercial finite element code for model of various loading conditions. As results, the deformed shape and stress distribution of WS-750T and Jetway system type are obtained. It is expected to establish basic technology to design and change the shape of boarding bridge to improve the function.

  • Electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) process has currently been applied to thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) for aircraft engines. Due to unique columnar structure, EB-PVD TBCs have advantages in resistances to thermal shock and thermal cycle for their applications, compared to films prepared by plasma spray By the EB-PVD equipment, we successfully obtained yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) layer which has columnar and feather like structure including a large amount of nano size pores and gaps. The EB-PVD technique has been developed for coating functional perovskite type oxides such as (La, Sr)MnO3. Electrode properties have been improved by interface and structural control.

  • With the exception of some large domestic airlines with adequate maintenance capability, most low-cost and small airlines do not have the facilities, equipment/tools, or manpower to perform periodic inspections over "C check." They are repaired according to maintenance programs specified by manufacturers. The outsourcing (domestic or overseas) of maintenance contracts is thus crucial to achieve good quality service at low cost, and these contracts therefore need to be signed with a full understanding of what is to be expected. This study aims to determine the requirements to be considered prior to finalizing such contracts.

  • In contemporary modern society, people are constantly exposed to many kinds of noise, such as that from machinery, aircraft, construction sites, or road traffic. Noise is considered one of the most indispensable and influential parts of human life. This study investigates the acoustic characteristics of noise transfer from external sources to the human ear. For this study, we measured and analyzed various types of noise environments, installed monitoring speakers in a semi-anechoic room, and conducted intentional noise-filled experiments. In this environment, the size of the sounds generated by use of a portable device was also measured and the SNR (signal to noise ratio) calculated to study the influence of the noise. As sound is transmitted to the ear and the human body, it affects not only auditory damage but also other parts of the body. In this paper, we propose a proper SNR for noise emitted by portable IT equipment to prevent hearing loss when IT equipment is used.

  • Electrorheological(ER) and magnetorheological(MR) fluids have a unique ability to increase the dynamic yield stress of the fluid substantially when electric or magnetic field is applied. Controllable fluids such as ER and MR fluids have received considerable attention as several components of engineering devices. One of them is a smart impact damper using ER/MR fluids. Impact damper system can be used in the joint mechanism of railroad vehicle, protection equipment of elevator's drop, and launch equipment of aircraft. This paper presents the results of an analytical study of the performance of a smart impact damper to suppress vibration during impact excitation. The damping capabilities of MR impact damper for variable applied current are analyzed using Bingham model under sudden impact load.
