A new design approach for a delicate treatment of complex geometries such as a wing/body configuration is arranged using overset mesh technique under large scale computing environment for turbulent viscous flow. Various pre- and post-processing techniques which are required of overset flow analysis and sensitivity analysis codes are discussed for design optimization problems based on gradient based optimization method (GBOM). The overset flow analysis code is validated by comparing with the experimental data of a wing/body configuration (DLR-F4) from the 1st Drag Prediction Workshop (DPW-I). In order to examine the applicability of the present design tools, careful design works for the drag minimization problem of a wing/body configuration are carried out by using the developed aerodynamic shape optimization tools for the viscous flow over multiple-body aircraft geometries.

The present study was attempted to investigate flow interference effects and the aerodynamic characteristics of the front and rear wings of a joined-wing aircraft by changing the configuration variables. The study was performed using a computational fluid dynamics(CFD) tool to demonstrate forward flight and analyze aerodynamic characteristics. A total of 9 configurations were analyzed with variations on the position, height, dihedral angle, incidence angle, twist angle, sweepback angle, and wing area ratio of the front and rear wings while the fuselage was fixed. The quantities of aerodynamic coefficients were confirmed in accordance with joined-wing configurations. The closer the front and rear wings were located, the greater the flow interference effects tended. Interestingly, the rear wing did not any configuration change, the lift coefficient of the rear wing was decreased when adjusted to increase the incidence angle of the front wing. The phenomenon was appeared due to an effective angle of attack alteration of the rear wing resulting from the flow interference by the front wing configurations.

The objective of this study is to analyze customer needs for the configuration of an aircraft cockpit layout of a single piston propeller aircraft. From the result of survey, we figure out the demand of the potential customers. We consider control stick and instrument out of several items to determine which pay for the aircraft or not. We analyze types and features of the aircraft control stick and the instrument which are equipped in the same aircraft in order to figure out what is best needed through a market survey and a questionnaire survey.

The counter-flow jet from a supersonic/hypersonic vehicle causes a structural change in the shock wave generated around the aircraft, which can lead to reduced drag and heat loads. Since the idea is to mount a counter-flow jet device for drag reduction in the aircraft, it is necessary to understand the effect of such a device on the entire aircraft. In this study, the effect of drag reduction due to counter-flow jet on a conventional rocket configuration was analyzed through CFD analysis. The results showed that the drag reduction effect was the largest in the blunt region and that the counter-flow jet also affected the downstream of the aircraft. The analysis indicated that the drag reduction effect by the counter-flow jet was about 10 to 25 % when targeting the entire rocket-shaped area, while the effect was as high as 50% when targeting only blunt objects.
Aerodynamic analysis was done for a fuselage and wing configuration of a mid-sized aircraft using unsteady 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver. Various turbulent models including a transitional SST were used to observe a dynamic stall as well as cruise characteristics. Also, different mesh moving methods were evaluated. Flow hysteresis which causes dynamic stall was investigated through flow field investigations.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has proposed new vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft known as the Jet-VTOL aircraft shown in Fig.1. The Jet-VTOL aircraft is based on a canard wing configuration. The aircraft has the clustered lift-fans mounted near the center of gravity for vertical flight, and has the clustered fans mounted beside the vertical tail for cruise flight. Both fans are driven by the core engine mounted inside the aft end of fuselage. The propulsion system is innovative and attractive not to be seen even in the world.

For the very light jet aircraft design, the design baseline configuration has been selected using the logical decision making process, and the design optimization problem is formulated by considering the airworthiness regulations as design constraints. Airworthiness regulations are the minimum requirements for the safe aircraft flight and must be considered from the conceptual design stage. After carefully selecting the airworthiness constraints and the user specified requirements, a series of design making models including the affinity diagram, nested column diagram, quality function deployment (QFD), Pugh concept selection matrix, are used to find and evaluate alternative configuration baselines. From the feasible design space searching process, the best altenative design, which satisfies the airworthiness constraints while excluding the user subjective decisions as much as possible, has been successfully derived.

We develop a preliminary design optimization procedure in this paper regarding the wing planform in a solar-powered high-altitude long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle. A high-aspect-ratio wing has been widely adopted in this type of a vehicle, due to both the high lift-to-drag ratio and lightweight design. In the preliminary design, its characteristics need to be addressed correctly, and analyzed in an appropriate manner. In this paper, we use the three-dimensional Euler equation to analyze the wing aerodynamics. We also use an advanced structural modeling approach based on a geometrically exact one-dimensional beam analysis. Regarding the structural integrity of the wing, we determine detailed configuration parameters, specifically the taper ratio and the span length. Next, we conduct a multi-objective optimization scheme based on the response surface method, using the present baseline configuration. We consider the structural integrity as one of the constraints. We reduce the wing weight by approximately 25.3 % from that in the baseline configuration, and also decrease the power required approximately 3.4 %. We confirm that the optimized wing has sufficient flutter margin and improved static longitudinal/directional stability characteristics, as compared to those of the baseline configuration.

Modern versions of supersonic jet fighter aircraft using a digital flight-by-wire flight control system design utilizes a control surface reconfiguration in order to guarantee the aircraft flight stability when a control surface is failed. The T-50 flight control laws are designed such that the surface reconfiguration mode controls the aircraft using non-failed control surfaces when one of the control surfaces is failed. In this paper, linear analysis and HQS(Handling Quality Simulator) pilot simulations are performed to analyze the flight stability and handling quality when the surface reconfiguration mode is engaged for aircraft landing configuration. It is found that the aircraft flight stability and handling quality is satisfied to level 1 requirements when the T-50 flight control law is changed to the surface reconfiguration mode.
