Evaporator Thermal Performance Prediction on Automotive Air Conditioning System (자동차 공조장치용 증발기의 전열 성능 예측)

  • Recently, automotive air conditioning system manufacturers have been made a great efforts on the system compactness and high efficiency. This growing interest comes improvements in evaporator thermal performance, one of the most important factors affecting the performance of air conditioning system. In order to improve design of compact type evaporator, this study executes performs to develop a computer program for evaporator thermal performance prediction of automotive air conditioning system. The brief summaries of this study are as follows: 1) To predict the overall thermal performance of serpentine type evaporator, the new simulating method is developed. 2) The calculations are performed as functions of oil mass concentration and refrigerant two-phase distribution at inlet manifold of evaporator. 3) The validity of this simulating program is confirmed by comparing the predicted thermal performance results to experimental results of practical available evaporator. 4) Based on these results, suggestions are made to improve the thermal performance of evaporator.

  • The hybrid liquid desiccant air conditioning system has been in use for many years, primarily in industrial process applications requiring dehumidification and humidity control. In this study, the hybrid dehumidifier has been designed to study the dehumidification characteristic of the aqueous triethylene glycol (TEG) solution. The experimental results show energy efficient characteristics of hybrid liquid desiccant air conditioning system compared with the refrigeration system in terms of energy use, the difference of pressure loss between hybrid liquid desiccant air conditioning system and refrigeration system. Data obtained are useful for design guidance and performance analysis of the hybrid air conditioning system.

  • In this study, an experiment on an air conditioning test bench was performed to verify the possibility of fuel economy simulation for the SC03 mode, North America fuel economy certification mode with a/c on condition, one of the vehicle fuel economy evaluation modes. The air conditioning test bench used in this study had each chamber simulating the actual vehicle air conditioning system and the controlling temperature, humidity, and air flow velocity to reproduce environmental conditions. Reliable results were obtained about the compressor RPM and inlet air velocity in front of the condenser corresponding to vehicle speed and air velocity in front of the vehicle, respectively, in the simulation of the SC03 mode, previously performed in CWT, in an air conditioning test bench. It was also discovered that there was a distinct difference in the fuel economy depending on the difference in the compressor displacement in the simulation test of the SC03 mode in the air conditioning test bench under various displacement conditions of the compressor.

  • In this study, we suggested a design modification method to reduce the vibration of an air conditioner for railway vehicles and increase the durability of its pipe lines. Through experimental vibrational mode analyses and structural modifications on the air conditioning system, vibration reduction scheme was suggested and evaluated its effectiveness by empirical modal analysis. The derived design idea was applied to a real air conditioning system and the expected improvement was obtained.

  • This paper describes the PI controller design based on a practical transfer function model for centrifugal water chillers. The rotational speed of a compressor and the opening angle of an electronic expansion valve were simultaneously regulated as manipulated variables to maintain temperature reference and to ensure high efficiency of the chiller. The COP according to the change in each variable was investigated by performing some static experiments, and it was reflected in the PI controller design to accomplish the high efficiency control. Especially, the practical transfer function model of the chiller was built based on the dynamic experimental data considering the strong inherent non-linearity and complexity of the chiller system. The validity of the designed PI controller was proven by some experimental results using the test facility and the results were also compared to the conventional evaporating pressure control results.

  • The proportional plus integral(PI) feedback control manner has been used in many general industrial fields such as refrigeration system because of its simple design process and favorable control performance. This paper deals with optimized PI controller design of the refrigeration system based on evaluation functions such as integrated absolute error(IAE). The suggested optimal PI gains can be easily calculated by a simple program and the optimal controllability satisfying the evaluation function can be assured. Furthermore, at the initial step of controller design, the suggested optimal gain is able to reflect some noise disturbances caused by an inverter which drives variable speed compressors. The validity of the suggested optimal gain is investigated by some simulations and experiments to verify its efficiency. From the results of comparing control performance between the optimal PI controller based on the evaluation function and the PI controller designed by the Matlab tuner which was known as the most popular gain tuner, the optimal PI controller showed more desirable control performance especially in transient responses.

Characteristics of Hydrocarbon Refrigerants on Evaporating Heat Transfer and Pressure Drop

  • Experimental results for heat transfer characteristics and pressure gradients of HCs refrigerants R-290, R-600a, R-1270 and HCFC refrigerant R-22 during evaporating inside horizontal double pipe heat exchangers are presented. The test sections which has one tube diameter of 12.70 mm with 0.89 mm wall thickness, another tube diameter of 9.52 mm with 0.76 mm wall thickness are used for this investigation. The local evaporating heat transfer coefficients of hydrocarbon refrigerants were higher than that of R-22. The average evaporating heat transfer coefficient increased with the increase of the mass flux, with the higher values in hydrocarbon refrigerants than R-22. Hydrocarbon refrigerants have higher pressure drop than R-22. Those results from the investigation can be used in the design of heat exchangers using hydrocarbons as the refrigerant for the air-conditioning systems.

An Analysis of the Optimal Thermal Storage Time of Air-Conditioning System with Slab Thermal Storage : An Analysis by the Gradient Method Algorithm (슬래브축열의 최적축열시간 산정 : 구배법 알고리즘에 의한 해석)

  • In this paper, the optimal thermal storage time of an air-conditioning system with slab thermal storage in office building was analyzed on the basis of the gradient method algorithm. The sum of room temperature deviation and heat extraction rate was set to the criterion function. It was calculated that four hours is the optimal thermal storage time under the standard evaluation criterion. Furthermore, some case studies were executed by controlling ratio of weight functions of room temperature deviation and heat extraction rate in criterion function. It is possible to design many kinds of optimal operation of an air-conditioning system with slab thermal storage by controlling ratio of the weight functions in criterion function.

A Study for the Design of the Air-Conditioning Duct of Korean High Speed Train (한국형 고속전철의 에어컨 덕트 설계를 위한 연구)

  • The noises generated from the air-conditioning duct are known to strongly affect the indoor-noises of high speed trains. The acoustic characteristics of an air-conditioning duct should depend on the geometry and shape of the duct. The structural material for Korean high speed train is supposed to be changed from Steel, which was used for TGV, to Aluminum in order to reduce the total train weight. Accordingly, the shape and layout of the air-conditioning duct of Korean high speed train will be different from that of TGV. Thus, this paper introduces a analytical method to predict the noise attenuation through the air-conditioning duct, based on the ISO 7235. In this method, the whole duct is divided into several pieces and the noise attenuations predicted for each duct piece are integrated to get the noise attenuation for the whole duct system. The validity of the method introduced herein is discussed through some numerical tests.

Optimization of Shroud Shape and Fan Location for Increasing Exhaust Flow Rate of Air Conditioner Outdoor Unit (실외기 토출 유량 증대를 위한 Shroud 형상 및 휀 위치 최적 설계)

  • This paper presents a numerical evaluation of the flow rate of air conditioner outdoor unit by investigating the effects of fan location and shroud shape. To determine optimal design parameters, we investigated the exhaust flow rate by changing shroud height, fan height, fan guide height, and fan width. The 3rd order central composite design was performed to select three most important parameters affecting the exhaust flow rate. According to the result of response surface method, the exhaust flow rate of the optimum model increased by 6.25% compared to that of the base model.
