  • AC induction motors have been widely used for fan motor of the air conditioner indoor unit. Noise of these AC induction motors is usually caused by the coupling effects of structural and electrical systems. The rotating torque and the noise from AC induction motor were discussed in this paper,. First, the modification of motor was carried out in order to reduce the unbalance magneto motive force between main and sub winding. Second, structural modification based on normal mode analysis and modal testing was carried out so that the fan motor does not have the natural frequencies near the 2f-line frequency. Numerical modifications through these two processes were verified by experiments, which showed that the sound pressure level at 2f-line frequency of the modified system became about 25dB less than that of conventional one.

  • Compared to yellow dust coming from China or particulate matter created naturally in spring due to Total Suspended Particulate(TSP), particulate matter in winter season have much more serious effect on human body as they penetrate cell membranes. Although such particulate matter are becoming a social issue, there are no concrete plans on how to reduce them. Air-purifying plants are limited in maintaining the indoor air quality of large area because it is usually difficult to quantify their performance. In order to improve this, a bio-filter that can be connected to air conditioner is suggested as an option. This study seeks to improve air conditioning model-based monitoring method for bio-filters from prior studies and objectify correlations between applied vegetation and growing environment into quantitative indicators. By doing so, this study seeks to provide criteria on plants applied to artificial soil-based vegetation bio-filters and basic information to set air-conditioning features. The study results confirmed significant tendency on the growing stability of each purifying plant in mechanical air-conditioning environment. Among three models selected for bio-filter vegetation models, epipremnum aureum showed high performance in quantitative indicators, including soil moisture, EC, and leaf temperature, etc., indicating that it would assure the highest growing stability in this test air-conditioning environment.

  • Comprehensive experimental works are carried out for the optimal design of a centrifugal blower adopted in an indoor unit of an air-conditioner. The models for consideration are typical multi-blade turbo blower and limit loaded one, respectively. The main interest lies on the fluid dynamics performance when the blower Is installed in the practical system. The methodologies are an experimental estimations with a wind tunnel for blower performance and PIV measurement for the detail flow information. A centrifugal blower with limit loaded fan shows pronounced performances in terms of the flow rate and static pressure rise and the reason is explained by the precise measurement of the flows between blades using PIV. Consequently, it is found that the blower is proper for the flows with a resistance in down stream such as a heat exchanger.

  • In this study, a cross-flow fan system used in indoor unit of the split-type air conditioner is analyzed by computational simulation. A commercial CFD code - Fluent - is used to calculate the performance and its unsteady flow characteristics. The unsteady incompressible Wavier-Stokes equations are solved using a sliding mesh technique on the interface between rotating fan region and the outside. The acoustic pressure is calculated by using Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings equation. (omitted)

  • In this paper, we performed the experimental and numerical study on the thermal comfort(TC) and indoor air quality(IAQ) in the lecture room with a different airflow rate of the ventilation system and heating system for heating season. Through the experimental results, we found out that there was considerably difference of the PMV but there was little difference of $CO_2$ concentration with a different heating system. From a numerical results, the best operating condition was that discharge airflow rate of SAC is 29 CMM and supply airflow rate of the ventilation system is 1,200 CMH from a viewpoint of TC and IAQ.

  • In this study, performance, flow characteristics and noise of a cross-flow-fan system, used in indoor unit of the split-type air conditioner, were predicted by computational simulation. Triangular elements were used to mesh the calculation domain and quadrilateral elements were attached to the blade surfaces and walls to enhance the simulation quality. The unsteady incompressible Wavier-Stokes equations were solved using a sliding mesh technique on the interface between rotating fan region and the outside. Two stripes of velocity stream inside the cross-flow-fan were shown - the one was due to the eccentric vortex and the other was due to the normal entrance flow. As the flow rate increased, the center of the eccentric vortex moved toward the inner blade tip and rear-guide, and the exiting flow still had velocity variation along the stabilizer, which can increase the noise level. The acoustic pressure was calculated by using Lowson's equation. From the calculated acoustic pressure, it was found that the trailing edge is a dominant of acoustic generation.
