  • Indoor air quality models are useful to predict indoor air pollutant concentrations as a function of several indoor factors. Indoor air quality model was developed to evaluate the pollutant removal efficiency of variable-air-volume/bypass filtration system (VAV/BPFS) compared with the conventional variable-air-volume (VAV) system. This model provides relative pollutant removal effectiveness of VAV/BPFS by concentration ratio between the conventional VAV system and VAV/BPFS. The predictions agree closely, from 5 to 10 percent, with the measured values for each energy load. As a results, we recommend the VAV/BPFS is a promising alternative to conventional VAV system because it is capable of reducing indoor air pollutant concentration and maintaining good indoor air quality.

공기 중 석면농도 분석시 관상어용 기포발생기를 개조한 장치와 기존의 상업용 시료 채취기와의 성능 비교 (Comparison of the Efficiency between a Remodeled Bubble Generating Pumps for an Aquarium Fish and the Existed Commercial Air Sampler for the Sampling of Ambient Air Asbestos)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to estimate the applicability of regional sample collection of environmental samples. The concentration of asbestos fibers were analyzed with two devices. One was an existing commercial air sampling pump that has been proved to be accurate and exact, and the other is a remodeled pump for sample collection which was made from an electric bubble generator originally designed for aquarium fish. Samples were collected with the two devices under the same environmental conditions and collection equipment. A comparative analysis of the concentration of ambient asbestos fiber was then performed. Methods: Based on previous research, six farmhouses with asbestos fiber slate roofs known to have high concentrations of asbestos fiber were selected. Using the existing commercial air sampling pump and the remodeled electric bubble generator, four to seven samples were collected each day one meter downwind from the edge of the slate roof at high volume (about 4 L/min) and low volume (about 1.4 L/min). The analyzer responsible for sample quality control of asbestos fibers counted the number of asbestos fibers with a phase microscope. Results: The rates of flow change of the existed sampler and the remodeled pump at high volume were 0.82% and 0.17%, respectively. The rates of flow change at low volume were 3.83% and 1.09%, but there was not significant difference. The rates of flow change are within the error range (${\pm}5%$) of OSHA analyzing methods. For the high volume sampler, the average asbestos fiber concentration in the air collected by the existed sampler is 6.270 fibers/L and for the remodeled one 5.527 fibers/L, not a significant difference. For the low volume sampler, the average asbestos fiber concentration in the air collected by the existed sampler is 7.755 fibers/L and for the remodeled one 7.706 fibers/L, not a significant difference. The total area of the slate roof of the targeted farmhouse has an effect on the concentration of asbestos fibers in the air from the existing pump and the remodeled one (p<0.01). Conclusions: The sampling function between the existing commercial pump and the remodeled one shows little difference. Therefore, the remodeled pump is considered a pump with a good availability for collecting ambient air asbestos samples.

  • This study examined the effect of foam volume ratio and curing temperature the air dry density and compressive strength of lightweight concrete using bottom ash. Test results showed that the lightweight concrete possessed the compressive strength of 3.4~22.7 MPa at the air dry density of 1,041~1,583 kg/m3.

  • A cylindrical constant-volume combustion chamber was used to investigate the flow characteristics at the spark electrode gap and the combustion characteristics of an inhomogeneous charge methane-air mixture under several parameters such as stratified pattern, initial charge pressure, ignition time and the excess air ratio of the initial charge mixture. Flow characteristics including mean velocity and turbulence intensity were analyzed by a hot-wire anemometer. The combustion pressure development, measured by a piezo-electric pressure transducer, was used to investigate the effect of initial charge pressure, excess air ratio and ignition times on combustion pressure and combustion duration. It was found that the mean velocity and turbulence intensity had the maximum value around 200-300 ms and then decreased gradually to near-zero value at 3000 ms. For the stratified patterns, the combustion rate under the rich injection (RI) condition was the fastest. Under the initial charge conditions, the second mixture was accompanied by an increase in the combustion rate, and that the higher the mass which is added in the second stage injection, the faster the combustion rate.

A Survey on Improvements of Range Hood in Apartment

  • Purpose: Residential cooking(gas or electricity) emits many air pollutants. For Removal of these contaminants, range hood is play an important role in the cooking activities. However, deterioration about performance of range hood can be occur in used range hood which is not verified on performance by testing balancing and adjusting in apartment. So, purpose of this study is to improve the range hood against cooking-generated contaminations. Method: To improve hood, survey of range hood which mounted in apartment have to conduct at first. In this study, the survey was conducted for 3 steps. First, Visual inspection for conditions of range hood. Second, questionnaire of operating and maintenance method. Third, interview with user about need for improvement, complainant. Finally, we integrated the survey for range hood and introduced the probable cause of deterioration through this comprehensive survey. Result: Result of measurement for air volume for range hood, A measured air volume has reduced by 41.4, 38.0, 32.0% each step from rated air volume. There are lots of reasons of this phenomenon including to maintenance, air path of duct, lower-cost devices, exhaust ports. For solve this problem, guideline about operating hood, user in apartment will have to supply with maintenance information at first.

허브 형상에 따른 정풍량 환기팬의 유동과 성능특성 (Flow Behavior and Performance Characteristics of Constant Air Volume Fan According to Different Hub Shape)

  • The constant air volume flow fan can maintain constant flow rate to the wide range of exit pressure. Therefore, the use of this fan is increasing recently for ventilation of high building. Brushless DC motor is adopted to this fan because that has advantages of compactness and performance. But this type of motor protrude from impeller hub side to fan inlet. The Impeller inlet flow is influenced by size of this obstacle called hub. In this paper, the influence of hub shape on the fan performance characteristics are experimentally and numerically analyzed. CFX 12.0 is used to perform the fan internal flow analysis and numerical results are compared with the experiments. Depending on hub shape, internal loss is generated and the performance and efficiency are reduced. The best performance is occurred around $h/b_1$ = 0.25. The results of this study will be contribute to initial design of constant air volume flow fan development.

  • A computer program was developed for the prediction of transient flow in a water supply system. where an air chamber is installed to reduce the water hammering. The governing equations based on a characteristic method are solved using a finite difference method. A design process of an air chamber is shown in the present paper considering the effects of the initial air volume and the discharge coefficients of the orifice on the total volume and over-all performance of the chamber.

  • The study was carried out about the roof hood structure of power car for Korean High Speed Train. The compatibility for applied material and volume of hood duct was studied using analysis about heat and flow distributions. The materials and volume of duct were mainly determined by output air temperature and flow rate of each electric blocks. This report was described, which focuses on pressure distribution and air temperature within engine compartment of power car.

  • In this study, an air cleaner is considered to improve comfort, safety, and health of automobile passengers. The performance and installation conditions of the air cleaner have been studied to investigate their effects on the air quality in the cabin room using numerical analysis. A five-passenger sedan and a seven-passenger minivan that have comparatively large indoor volume have been considered. The distributions of the local mean age and the volume averaged age of indoor air are calculated according to the variation of the placement and the air flow of the air cleaner. In addition, a decrease of contamination concentration, especially VOCs(volatile organic compounds), by the air cleaner is numerically analyzed with time-accurate unsteady calculation to quantify the effect of the air cleaner on the indoor air quality. As a result, the effective installation and operation conditions of the air cleaner for the automobile cabin room could be suggested.
