This study is theoretically examined the influences on the performance of diesel engine super¬charged by exhaust gas turbine with the change of excess air factor, admission ratio, total efficien¬cy of turbine and compressor, scavenging pressure ratio, and scavenging temperature. In this study, all calculations are carried out by computer, and the theoretical engine performance is com¬pared with the actual engine performance which is offered from engine manufacturer. Following results are acquired by this study. The mean effective pressure is increased with decrease of excess air factor or increase of scavenging pressure ratio. As the admission ratio or total efficiency of tur¬bine is increased, the mean effective pressure is increased but the specific fuel consumption is decreased. Mean calculation error compared with the actual engine performance is under 5 per¬cents, therefore, this calculation method can be used in the design of diesel engine.
The development of numerical mathematical model to calculate both the static and dynamic characteristics of a multi-shaft gas turbine consisting of a single combustion chamber, including advanced cycle components such as intercooler and regenerator is presented in this paper. The numerical mathematical model is based on the simplified assumptions that quasi-static characteristic of turbo-machine and injector is used, total pressure loss and heat transfer relation for static calculation neglecting fuel transport time delay can be employed. The supercharger power has a cubical relation to its rotating velocity. The accuracy of each calculation is confirmed by monitoring mass and energy balances with comparative calculations for different time steps of integration. The features of the studied gas turbine scheme are the starting device with compressed air volumes and injector's supercharging the air directly ahead of the combustion chamber.

A vertical bulb turbine unit with elbow type draft tube has been developed due to avoidance of complicated assembling and long standstill period at overhaul in comparison with conventional horizontal bulb turbine unit. Before designing the prototype vertical bulb unit, a hydrographic model test was carried out to establish the ideal design concept for this innovative generating unit. Froude similarity is not available for vortex occurrence. Consequently, an intake structure without air entraining vortices under all the flow conditions is developed, and it is confirmed that the surge wave at load rejection is not affected harmful influence for other constructions.
A numerical study was conducted to determine the effects of high temperature air, including equivalent ratio on flow field, temperature, evaporation, and overall temperature distribution in gas turbine combustor. A sector model of a typical wall jet can combustor, featuring introduction of primary air and dilution air via wall jet, was used in calculations. Flow field and temperature distribution were analyzed. Operating conditions such as inlet temperature and overall equivalent ratio were varied from 373 to 1300 K, and from 0.3 to 0.6, respectively, while any other operating conditions were fixed. The RNG ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model and eddy breakup model were used for turbulence and combustion model respectively. It was found that the increase with the inlet air temperature, velocity in the combustor is accelerated and evaporation of liquid fuel is not affected in primary zone, high temperature inlet air enhances the evaporation and improves overall temperature distribution factor.

This paper describes numerical analysis of the impulse turbine with fixed guide vanes, a high performance hi-directional air turbine having simple structure for wane energy conversion. A 3-dimensional incompressible viscous flow numerical analysis based on the full Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes equations was made to investigate the internal flow behavior Numerical results ate compared with experimental data. As a result, a suitable choice for the one of design factors has been clarified.
Present paper describes on/off design performance of a 50KW turbogenerator gas turbine engine for hybrid vehicle application. For optimum design point selection, relevant parameter study is carried out. The turbogenerator gas turbine engine for a hybrid vehicle is expected to be designed for maximum fuel economy, ultra low emissions, and very low cost. Compressor, combustor, turbine, and permanent-magnet generator will be mounted on a single high speed (82,000 rpm) shaft that will be supported on air bearings. As the generator is built into the shaft, gearbox and other moving parts become unnecessary and thus will increase the system's reliability and reduce the manufacturing cost. The engine has a radial compressor and turbine with design point pressure ratio of 4.0. This pressure ratio was set based on calculation of specific fuel consumption and specific power variation with pressure ratio. For the given turbine inlet temperature, a rather conservative value of $1100^\circK$ was selected. Designed mass flow rate was 0.5 kg/sec. Parametric study of the cycle indicates that specific work and efficiency increase at a given pressure ratio and turbine inlet temperature. Off design analysis shows that the gas turbine system reaches self operating condition at N/$N_{DP}$ = 0.53. Bleeding air for turbine stator cooling is omitted considering low TIT and for a simple geometric structure. Various engine performance simulations including, ambient temperature influence, surging at part load condition. Transient analysis were performed to secure the optimum engine operating characteristics. Surge margin throughout the performance analysis were maintained to be over 80% approximately. Validation of present results are yet to be seen as the performance tests are scheduled by the end of 1998 for comparison.

In this paper, a numerical analysis was conducted on the effect of the flow control valve of a oscillation water column(OWC) type wave power generator turbine. The OWC wave power turbine operates with compressed air in the air chamber according to the change of wave height. When the wave height changes rapidly, a flow control valve is required due to overload of the turbine and reduced efficiency. Therefore, in this paper, a flow control valve with an opening angle of 60 degrees was installed in the front of the turbine, and the pressure drop, torque, and overall performance were calculated according to the change of turbine RPM and flow rate of turbine inlet. In conclusion, the flow control valve with an opening angle of 60 degrees affects when the turbine rotates at low rotation and the inlet flow rate is large. But it does not have a significant effect on overall turbine performance and it is necessary to find the optimal angle in the future works.
In the present study, an annular combustor for a 500 W class micro gas turbine generator was designed and its characteristics were investigated by using both numerical and experimental methods. For this purpose, geometrical configurations of the annular combustor were determined in the aspect of the aerodynamic and chemical consideration. Also, fluid flow and pressure drop characteristics in the combustor were numerically studied by using commercial tool, FLUENT. Based on the numerical results, the diameter and the angle of air admission holes in the primary zone were chosen to be 2.5 mm and $30^{\circ}$, respectively. Finally, an integrated test unit, which consisted of a compressor, combustor, turbine, and motor/generator, was developed in order to measure the combustor efficiency. As the temperature difference between the combustor inlet and the turbine inlet or the air mass flow rate increased, the combustor efficiency increased and it was over 90% when the air mass flow rate was larger than 7.30 g/s. It was shown that the annular combustor developed in this study met the design requirement for a 500 W class micro gas turbine generator.

For a prototype turbine operating under part load conditions, the turbine output is fluctuating strongly, leading to the power station incapable of connecting to the grid. The field test of the prototype turbine shows that the main reason is the resonance between the draft tube vortex frequency and the generator natural vibration frequency. In order to reduce the fluctuation of power output, different measures including the air admission, water admission and adding flow deflectors in the draft tube are put forward. CFD method is adopted to simulate the three-dimensional unsteady flow in the Francis turbine, to calculate pressure fluctuations in draft tube under three schemes and to compare with the field test result of the prototype turbine. Calculation results show that all the three measures can reduce the pressure pulsation amplitude in the draft tube. The method of water supply and adding flow deflector both can effectively change the frequency and avoid resonance, thus solving the output fluctuation problem. However, the method of air admission could not change the pressure fluctuation frequency.
Development of long-term mobile energy sources for mobile robots or small-sized unmanned vehicles are actively increasing. The micro gas turbine generator (MTG) is a good candidate for this purpose because it has both of high energy density and high power density, and 500W class MTG is under development. The designed MTG can be divided into 2 main parts. One part consists of motor/ generator and compressor, and the other one consists of combustor, recuperator and turbine. 500W class MTG is designed to operate at ultra-high speed of 400,000 rpm in high turbine temperature over $700^{\circ}C$ to improve the efficiency. Because the magnetism of NdFeB permanent magnet for the motor/generator could be degraded if the temperature is over $150-200^{\circ}C$, MTG needs the thermal insulation to block the heat transfer from combustor/turbine side to motor/generator side. Moreover, the motor/generator is allocated to get the cooling effect from the rapid air flow by the compressor. This study presents the experimental results to verify whether the thermal insulator and air flow are effective enough to keep the motor/generator part in the low temperature less than $100^{\circ}C$. From the motoring test by using the high temperature test rig, it was confirmed that the motor/generator part could maintain the temperature less than $50^{\circ}C$ under the condition of 1.0 bar compressed air.
