Analysis of Tropospheric Carbon Monoxide over East Asia

  • Carbon monoxide (CO) is one of the important trace gases because its concentration in the troposphere directly influences the concentrations of tropospheric hydroxyl (OH), which controls the lifetimes of tropospheric trace gases. CO traces the transport of global and regional pollutants from industrial activities and large scale biomass burning. The distributions of CO were analyzed using the MOPITT data for East Asia, which were compared with the ozone distributions. In general, seasonal CO variations are characterized by a peak in the spring, which decrease in the summer. The monthly average for CO shows a similar profile to that for O$_3$. This fact clearly indicates that the high concentration of CO in the spring is possibly due to one of two causes: the photochemical production of CO in the troposphere, or the transport of the CO into East Asia. The seasonal cycles for CO and O$_3$ in East Asia are extensively influenced by the seasonal exchanges of different air mass types due to the Asian monsoon. The continental air masses contain high concentrations of O$_3$ and CO, due to the higher continental background concentrations, and sometimes to the contribution from regional pollution. In summer this transport pattern is reversed, where the Pacific marine air masses that prevail over Korea bring low concentrations of CO and O$_3$, which tend to give the apparent summer minimums.

황해상 덕적도의 대기 에어로졸 특성 (Aerosol Characteristics at Tokchok Island in the Yellow Sea)

  • Various air pollutants were measured at Tokchok Island in the Yellow Sea that is about 50 km distant from Incheon since April 1999. This study was undertaken to help understanding the level of air pollution and its distribution characteristics over the Yellow Sea. The geographical characteristics of the air pollution monitoring station and emission inventories of Tokchok Island are introduced. The mass concentrations and chemical compositions of TSP and P $M_{2.5}$ measured until March 2000 are discussed in this paper. The overall average mass concentrations are about 37.2 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ for TSP and 18.7 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ for P $M_{2.5}$ , respectively, which are similar to or a little lower than the values observed in other background sites at Kangwha and Taean. However, they are much lower than those observed at Qingdao in China. The low mass concentration and major anthropogenic ion concentrations in aerosols collected at Tokchok Island show that local sources are not dominant at Tokchok Island. The estimated average fractions of anthropogenic non-sea-salt sulfate to the total sulfate concentration of TSP and P $M_{2.5}$ are greater than 80% for both sizes. It hence suggests that the sulfate be mainly affected by anthropogenic sources. If we consider the average mass ratio of P $M_{2.5}$ to TSP, the mass fractions of anthropogenic species to P $M_{2.5}$ , and the molar ratio of nss S $O_4$$^{2-}$ to total N $O_{3-}$, it may be possible to infer that a part of anthropogenic species measured at Tokchok Island be transported from China. The characteristics of neutralization of nss S $O_4$$^{2-}$ and the particle size of major ions are also discussed.

부산지역 고농도 오존일의 선행 기상 특성 연구 (A Study on the Characteristics of Antecedent Meteorologic Conditions on High Ozone Days in Busan)

  • Comparing to the other air pollutants like $SO_2$, CO, the number of exceedance of the ozone national ambient air quality standard(NAAQS) and the ozone warning increased recently in Busan. The purpose of this study is to find out the preliminary symptoms for high ozone days in Busan area. In order to find out the preliminary symptoms, the hourly ozone data at air quality monitoring stations and the hourly meterological parameters at Busan regional meteorological 2007 to 2013 were used for the analysis. Averaged daily max ozone concentration was the highest(0.055 ppm) at Noksan and Youngsuri in the ozone season from 2007 to 2013. The horizontal distributions of daily max. ozone including all stations in Busan at high ozone days(the day exceeding 0.1 ppm of ozone concentration at least one station) were classified from two to five clusters by hierarchial cluster analysis. The meteorological variables showing strong correlation with daily max. ozone were the daily mean dew point temperature, averaged total insolation, the daily mean relative humidity and the daily mean cloud amount. And the most frequent levels were $19-23^{\circ}C$ in dew point temperature, $21-24 MJ/m^2$ in total insolation on the day before, $2.6-3.0 MJ/m^2$ on the very day, 67-80% in relative humidity and 0-3 in cloud amount.

기계학습 Adaboost에 기초한 미세먼지 등급 지도 (Particulate Matter Rating Map based on Machine Learning with Adaboost Algorithm)

  • 미세먼지는 사람의 건강에 많은 영향을 미치는 물질로서 이와 관련하여 다양한 연구가 이루어지고 있다. 미세먼지의 인체 영향으로 인해 서울시 모니터링 네트워크에서 측정된 과거 데이터를 활용하여 미세먼지를 예측하려는 다양한 연구가 진행되고 있다. 본 연구는 2019년 5월 서울시의 미세먼지를 중점으로 진행하였으며, 학습에 사용한 변수는 SO2, CO, NO2, O3와 같은 대기오염물질 데이터를 활용하였다. 예측모델은 Adaboost에 기반하여 구축하였고, 훈련모델은 PM10과 PM2.5로 구분하였다. 에러 메트릭스를 통한 예측모델의 정확도 평가 결과로 Adaboost가 시도되었다. 대기오염물질은 초미세먼지와 더 높은 상관성을 보이는 것으로 나타났지만, 보다 효과적인 분포등급을 제시하기 위해서는 많은 양의 데이터를 학습하고, PM10과 PM2.5의 공간분포 등급을 효과적으로 예측하기 위해서 교통량 등의 추가적인 변수를 활용할 필요성이 있다고 판단된다.

서울시 노원구 도로상 극미세입자 오염도 공간분포 특징 (Characteristics of spatial distribution of ultrafine particle number concentration on the roads of Nowon-gu, Seoul)

  • The spatial distributions of air pollutants, in particular, ultrafine particles near traffic congestion roads at urban areas need to reduce human exposure levels for protecting public health. In this study, the number concentrations of ultrafine particles larger than 5 nm were measured every second during driving on the major roads of Nowon-gu, Seoul for 1.6 h using a mobile emission laboratory on October 5, 2010. The ultrafine particle number concentrations ranged from 7,009 to $265,600particles/cm^3$ with an average of $55,570particles/cm^3$, and these levels were comparable to concentrations of ultrafine particles larger than 3 or 7 nm on the arterial roads at urban areas in Los Angeles, USA and Zurich, Switzerland. It was frequently observed that the ultrafine particle number increased rapidly when vehicle speed was accelerated and it decreased sharply when vehicle speed was decelerated. The high peak events of ultrafine particle concentration larger than $200,000particles/cm^3$ were observed seven times during the measurement period. From the three repeated measurements during the short period of 50 min, it was concluded that the ultrafine particle number concentration on the road was significantly time-dependent. This on-road measurement approach can be utilized to manage vehicle-related air pollution in urban.

양액의 전기전도도 및 칼륨 수준이 들깨 수원 16호의 대기오염 지표성에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Electric Conductivity and Potassium Level of the Culture Solution on the air Pollution Sensibility of Perillar Frutescens Suwon 16)

  • 대기오염물질에 대한 지표식물로서의 활용 가능성이 알려지고 있는 들깨 수원 16호를 대상으로 대기오염물질에 대한 식물의 반응에 중요하게 작용하는 기공의 개폐와 관련된 K와 EC를 주 변화요인으로하여 $NO_2$, $O_3$, $SO_2$ and $NO_2+SO_2$ 가스를 접촉시키면서 들깨의 가시적 지표성과 생장에 미치는 영향을 양액재배 실험으로 파악하고자 하였다. 들깨의 건물생산량은 55일 후에 K100 및 200mg/l 처리구에서 32.2 g/주로 가장 높았고, EC는 2.0 ds/m에서 16.3g/l으로 가장 높았다. 기공확산저항은 7-8위엽이 전개된 시기에 K 200mg/l와 2.0mg/l에서 가장 낮았다. 한편 K 50, 100mg/l, EC 0.5 ds/m 처리에서 대기오염가스의 접촉량의 증가에 따른 가시피해도의 증가가 가장 균일하게 나타났다. 따라서 K 50-100mg/l 수준, EC 0.5-1.0 dS/m 수준, 7-8위엽이 전개된 시에 들깨 수원 16호는 가장 뛰어난 대기오염 지표성을 나타내었다.

시·공간적 풍계에 따른 부산지역 고농도 PM2.5의 일변화 특성 (Characteristics of Diurnal Variation of High PM2.5 Concentration by Spatio-Temporal Wind System in Busan, Korea)

  • 본 연구는 3년(2005. 12. 1-2008. 11. 30) 동안 부산의 $PM_{2.5}$ 대기오염자동관측소(장림동: 공업지역, 좌동: 주거지역) 측정자료 중 고농도 $PM_{2.5}$(24시간 환경기준 $50{\mu}g/m^3$)에 대한 $PM_{2.5}$$PM_{2.5}/PM_{10}$ 농도비의 일변화 특성과 함께 시 공간적 풍계(풍향 및 풍속)에 따른 특성을 분석하고자 하였다. 고농도 $PM_{2.5}$는 장림동과 좌동 각각 182일 및 27일이었다. 장림동에서 고농도 $PM_{2.5}$의 시간평균농도 및 $PM_{2.5}/PM_{10}$ 농도비의 일변화는 모든 계절에서 오후에 비해 새벽과 오전 및 야간에 높은 비슷한 패턴을 나타내었다. 좌동의 여름 주간에 $PM_{2.5}/PM_{10}$ 농도비가 증가하는 것은 해양조건에서 광화학반응에 의해 생성되는 이차 입자상물질 중 $PM_{10}$의 거대입자 농도가 미세입자인 $PM_{2.5}$ 농도보다 더 감소하기 때문이다. 시간대별로 시 공간적 풍계(풍향 및 풍속등급) 특성을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 고농도 $PM_{2.5}$는 장림동에서 공업단지의 산업활동에 의한 오염물질 정체와 주변지역의 오염물질 이동에 의해 발생되었다. 좌동에서는 주로 주거와 상업활동으로 인한 지역적 오염물질 정체로 발생하는 것으로 나타났다.

PMF모델을 이용한 대기 중 PM-10 오염원의 정량적 기여도 추정 (Estimation of Quantitative Source Contribution of Ambient PM-10 Using the PMF Model)

  • In order to maintain and manage ambient air quality, it is necessary to identify sources and to apportion its sources for ambient particulate matters. The receptor methods were one of the statistical methods to achieve reasonable air pollution strategies. Also, receptor methods, a field of chemometrics, is based on manifold applied statistics and is a statistical methodology that analyzes the physicochemical properties of gaseous and particulate pollutant on various atmospheric receptors, identifies the sources of air pollutants, and quantifies the apportionment of the sources to the receptors. The objective of this study was 1) after obtaining results from the PMF modeling, the existing sources of air at the study area were qualitatively identified and the contributions of each source were quantitatively estimated as well. 2) finally efficient air pollution management and control strategies of each source were suggested. The PMF model was intensively applied to estimate the quantitative contribution of air pollution sources based on the chemical information (128 samples and 25 chemical species). Through a case study of the PMF modeling for the PM-10 aerosols, the total of 11 factors were determined. The multiple linear regression analysis between the observed PM-10 mass concentration and the estimated G matrix had been performed following the FPEAK test. Finally the regression analysis provided quantitative source contributions (scaled G matrix) and source profiles (scaled F matrix). The results of the PMF modeling showed that the sources were apportioned by secondary aerosol related source 28.8 %, soil related source 16.8%, waste incineration source 11.5%, field burning source 11.0%, fossil fuel combustion source 10%, industry related source 8.3%, motor vehicle source 7.9%, oil/coal combustion source 4.4%, non-ferrous metal source 0.3%. and aged sea- salt source 0.2%, respectively.

A Review on the Atmospheric Concentrations of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Asia Since 2000 - Part I: Data from Developed Countries

  • Among all hazardous air pollutants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are more significant owing to their carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic properties. Many researchers worldwide have focused on determining the concentrations of PAHs in ambient air. However, the literature survey reveals that the seriousness of air pollution in Asia in terms of PAHs, compared to the rest of the world. Owing to the importance of PAHs in Asia, this paper reviews the concentrations of PAHs in Asia in recent years. For convenience, this paper describes the concentrations of PAHs in developed Asian countries reported during 2000-2011 as Part-I and in developing Asian countries as Part-II. The first section of this review provides a brief description of the properties, sources of PAHs and the health effects caused by their presence in the atmosphere. The ambient air PAH concentrations in both particle and vapor phases in developed Asian countries are then discussed. This study finds the ambient air concentrations of PAHs in developed Asian countries was higher than the Western countries but was lower than the developing Asian countries. The present review predicts the accurate toxicity due to the presence of PAHs in the atmosphere by calculating the Risk Weighted Concentration (RWC), regardless of the total amount of PAHs. The total data obtained during the literature survey is tabulated and presented as supplementary information to the readers.

고형연료의 배출특성 연구 (A Study on the Characteristics of Solid-Fuel Combustion)

  • In this study, we developed emission factors from solid-fuel fired combustors. In order to increase the reliability of emission factors, we conducted a joint research with the Institute of Health and Environment. As a result, PM average concentration was $8.19mg/m^3$. $SO_2$ and $NO_x$ were respectively 8.46 ppm, 50.64 ppm. Hazardous air pollutants such as Cr, Pb and Hg were detected in trace amounts continuously for 2 years in some solid-fuel fired combustors. The emission factors for the three kinds of PM, $SO_x$, $NO_x$ were developed based on the measurement data. For the PM emission factors, that of SRF was 15.93 g/kg and that of Bio-SRF was 14.18 g/kg. Compared with those of US. EPA, emission factors of this study showed the results of low values. $SO_x$ emission factors were 4.42 g/kg for SRF and 1.39 g/kg for Bio-SRF. $NO_x$ emission factors were 13.21 g/kg and 4.43 g/kg, respectively. Through the results of this study, we would support atmospheric administration policies such as the emission factor notification revision.
