Systematic Analysis for the Effects of Atmospheric Pollutants in Cathode Feed on the Performance of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

  • This paper describes how primary contaminants in ambient air affect the performance of the cathode in fuel cell electric vehicle applications. The effect of four atmospheric pollutants ($SO_2$, $NH_3$, $NO_2$, and CO) on cathode performance was investigated by air impurity injection and recovery test under load. Electrochemical analysis via polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was performed for various concentrations of contaminants during the impurity test in order to determine the origins of performance decay. The variation in cell voltage derived empirically in this study and data reported in the literature were normalized and juxtaposed to elucidate the relationship between impurity concentration and performance. Mechanisms of cathode degradation by air impurities were discussed in light of the findings.

벽면형 식물바이오필터 내 식물 생육 및 실내공기질 정화 (Plant Growth Responses and Indoor Air Quality Purification in a Wall-typed Botanical Biofiltration System)

  • 본 연구의 최종 목표는 실내의 공간과 식물바이오필터의 규모에 따라 실내공기 오염물질을 정화할 수 있는 식물 녹화와 자동관수 그리고 생물학적 여과 기능을 통합한 식물바이오필터 시스템의 개발이다. 본 실험에 사용된 식물 바이오 필터는 실내공간을 효율적으로 사용하기 위해 물펌프, 물탱크, 송풍기, 가습장치, 그리고 다층 구조의 식물 식재 공간을 일체형으로 설계하였다. 본 연구는 인공적인 실내 공기 오염원을 발생시키지 않은 상태에서 바이오필터 부근의 공간과 바이오필터와 멀리 떨어진 공간(무처리구)의 실내 공기질을 비교하고, 바이오필터 내다층 구조의 식재층에 따른 식물의 생육을 평가하고자 수행하였다. 바이오필터 처리 공간 내 휘발성 유기 화합물(TVOCs), 일산화탄소, 이산화탄소와 같은 실내 공기 오염물질의 농도는 무처리구에 비해 낮게 나타났다. 또한 바이오필터 내 식재된 층에 관계없이 Dracaena sanderiana ‘Vitoria’와 Epipremnum aureum ‘N Joy’는 정상적으로 생육하였다. 따라서 실내식물을 식재할 수 있는 본 벽면형 식물바이오필터는 실내 공기 정화에도 효과가 있는 것으로 확인하였다.

서울, 강화, 서산, 광주, 제주지역에서의 장기간 대기오염 및 시정 변화경향에 대한 연구 : 1990년 1월~2001년 7월 (Long-term Trends of Visibility and Air Quality in Seoul, Ganghwa, Susan, Gwangju, Jeju)

  • Visibility impairment was known as an indicator of the increased air pollution. In many previous studies, it is known that both directly emitted fine particles mainly from vehicles and secondary aerosols from photochemical reactions could contribute to this visibility impairment in addition to the meteorological condition. Furthermore, the visibility showed different change patterns according to the geographical condition. In order to research into the influence of these factors on visibility, this study analyzed the visibility at 15:00, observed from 1990 to 2001 in Seoul, Ganghwa, Susan, Gwangju, Jeju. As a result, the visibility was increased in Seoul except the rainfall period, but in Susan, Gwangju, Jeju, it decreased with the relative humidity (RH). Especially, in Seoul, the number of low visibility days was larger than other sites and variations of the visibility were sensitive to the concentration of air pollutants, such as TSP, $NO_2$, $O_3$. The visibility impairment was mainly observed in meteorological condition of RH<50% and relatively stationary front. Therefore it is inferred that photochemical smog could lead to the low visibility in Seoul. On the other hands, in Ganghwa and Susan, when RH was 60~70%, the low visibility observed under the influence of the transports of air pollutants from nearby cities as well as humid air mass from coastal region. And in Jeju, sea fog and humid air mass caused the visibility impairment when the RH was larger than 80%. Finally, during the observational period, some cases of low visibility phenomena were simultaneously observed in the vast region including Seoul, Susan, Ganghwa. It not only includes the visibility aggravation by Asian Dust, but also could be caused by the movement and diffusion of flying dust or secondary aerosols. Moreover, the result shows that these phenomena could be mainly influenced by meteorological factors covering the wide regions.

신축 공동주택에서 실내공기오염물질(휘발성유기화합물 및 카보닐화합물) 농도분포 특성 (Characteristics of concentration distribution for indoor air pollutants (VOCs and Carbonyl compounds) in new apartments)

  • 신축공동주택에서 발생되는 실내공기 오염물질 중 휘발성유기화합물 및 카보닐화합물의 농도분포특성을 파악하고자 신축공동주택 120세대를 대상으로 실내공기 오염도 실태조사를 실시한 결과, 입주 전 신축공동주택의 실내공기 오염물질 농도는 톨루엔이 $272.81{\mu}g/m^3$, m, p-자일렌 $98.90{\mu}g/m^3$, 포름알데히드 $71.68{\mu}g/m^3$, 아세톤 $70.58{\mu}g/m^3$, 에틸벤젠 $49.76{\mu}g/m^3$로 조사되었다. TVOCs 물 구성비의 경우, 표준물질로 확인된 물질이 42.5%를 차지하였으며, 이 중 톨루엔이 18.5%로 가장 많은 비중을 차지하였다. 카보닐화합물의 경우, 포름알데히드와 아세톤이 각각 43.1%, 42.4%를 차지하였다. 또한, 주요 실내공기 오염물질의 실내/실외 농도비를 조사한 결과 벤젠은 1.29로 낮은 농도비로 조사되었으며, 톨루엔은 3.59, 포름알데히드는 10.76, o-자일렌은 28.74의 실내/실외 농도비를 나타내었다.

재활용 기반시설에서 발생하는 선별 잔재물의 자원화를 위한 도시생활폐기물과의 혼합소각 가능성 평가 (Feasibility Evaluation of Co-Incineration with MSW for Efficient Recycling of the Rejects after Separation Processes in MRF)

  • 본 연구는 재활용 기반시설에서 발생하는 선별 잔재물을 자원화 하기 위해 가연성 생활폐기물과 혼합하여 도시폐기물 소각로에서 소각 처리할 수 있는 가능성에 대해 고찰하였다. 선별 잔재물을 대상으로 성상과 조성, 삼성분, 발열량을 조사하여 가연성 생활폐기물의 경우와 비교 분석하였고, 도시생활폐기물 소각로에서 가연성 폐기물과 함께 혼합소각 함으로써 연소특성과 오염물질 배출특성 변화에 대해 실험하였다. 연구결과 재활용 기반시설 선별 잔재물이 가연성 생활폐기물에 비해 발열량(5,865 kcal/kg)이 높고, 수분과 회분 함량은 적었다. 또한, 재활용 기반시설 선별 잔재물을 30%와 50% 혼합하여 연소시킬 경우, 가연성 생활폐기물만을 연소하는 경우와 비교할 때, 먼지(dust), $SO_2$, $NO_2$, CO 농도 변화는 크지 않았을 뿐만 아니라, 현행 배출 허용기준을 만족하였다. 다만, 재활용 기반시설 선별 잔재물을 50% 혼합소각할 경우, HCl 농도(최고 33.7 ppm)가 배출허용기준을 초과하므로 30%까지 혼합하여 소각하는 것이 바람직하였다.

2010~2015년 전라북도 도시대기 PM10의 특성 (Distributions and Origins of PM10 in Jeollabuk-do from 2010 to 2015)

  • Recently, Jeollabuk-do has been reported as a province where the $PM_{10}$concentration is one of the highest levels in South Korea. To explore the characteristics and origins of the $PM_{10}$in Jeollabuk-do, we present one of the first long-term datasets including a statistical analysis of $PM_{10}$concentrations obtained from six cities in the province from 2010 to 2015. During the entire periods, the mean hourly $PM_{10}$concentration was $49.3{\mu}g/m^3$, which correspond to the annual ambient air quality standards for $PM_{10}$in South Korea, and the annual $PM_{10}$concentration of each city showed a similarity in year-to-year variations. In the monthly variation of $PM_{10}$, the $PM_{10}$concentrations showed a maximum value in May that was one of the top levels among the provinces of Korea while the concentrations were dramatically decreased in August showing one of the lowest levels among the provinces in Korea. For the diurnal variation of $PM_{10}$, the $PM_{10}$concentration was enhanced during the rush hours together with gaseous species of $NO_2$, and CO. When the high concentrations of $PM_{10}$were observed (the highest 10% of the $PM_{10}$mass contribution), temperature and relative humidity were low. Using HYSPLIT backward trajectories and cluster analysis for the high $PM_{10}$concentrations, we found that the pollution plumes were transported mainly from China.

신규 잔류성 유기오염물질(Emerging Persistent Organic Pollutants E-POPs) 핵사클로로시클로핵산(HCH)의 대기-토양-물-저질에서의 잔류특성 (Characteristics of Persistent of Hexachlorocyclohexane(HCH) in Ambient Air-Soil-Water-Sediment for a Emerging Persistent Organic Pollutants(POPs))

  • The purpose of the study was to analyze the persistence of HCH in atmosphere, soil, sediment and water of the western and southern regions of Korea. The samples from the western region were collected from Anmyeon Island, and the samples from the southern region were collected from Kimhae and Busan. The concentration of HCH isomers in atmosphere showed the pattern of $\alpha$-HCH>$\gamma$-HCH>$\beta$-HCH. The regions with high HCH concentration in the atmosphere are the regions that have been highly exposed to HCH used in the past, and the areas that have been influenced by the long range transport. The HCH that persists in the soil, water and sediment evaporates into the atmosphere, showing the characteristics of Air-Surface exchange. When the regional concentration distributions are compared, the concentration of HCH was higher in the atmosphere of a plain and the cities near the plain, than the urban areas. In this study, the ratio of $\alpha/\beta$-HCH was used as an indicator for estimating the source of Technical HCH and Lindane. According to the result, the contribution of Lindane was high in Kimhae plain and Kimhae urban areas. However, in Busan, the contribution of Technical HCH was higher than Lindane. In case of Anmyeon Island, the western region of Korea had high contribution from Tehcnical HCH. In soil and sediment, $\beta$-HCH was dominant. In water, $\gamma$-HCH was dominant among other isomers. Such results are due to $\gamma$-HCH inLindane. Furthermore, the source of $\gamma$-HCH in urban areas is assumed to be the use of medicine, medical supplies and other living supplies. Based on the results of this study, the management of HCH, a newly list up emerging POPs, should be strengthened by further research on sources, fate, persistency, accumulation and exposures and etc. to the risk assessments.

교사 내 플랜트 모델 유형별 적용에 따른 공기질 변화 (Changes in Air Quality through the Application of Three Types of Green-Wall Model within Classrooms)

  • Background: Adolescents are relatively more sensitive than adults to exposure to indoor pollutants. The indoor air quality in classrooms where students spend time together must therefore be managed at a safe level because it can affect the health of students. Objectives: In this study, three types of green-wall models were applied to classrooms where students spend a long time in a limited space, and the resulting effects on reducing PM were evaluated. Methods: In the middle school classrooms which were selected as the experimental subjects, IoT-based indoor air quality monitoring equipment was installed for real-time monitoring. Three types of plant models (passive, active, and active+light) were installed in each classroom to evaluate the effects on improving indoor air quality. Results: The concentration of PM in the classroom is influenced by outdoor air quality, but repeated increases and decreases in concentration were observed due to the influence of students' activities. There was a PM reduction effect by applying the green-wall model. There was a difference in PM reduction efficiency depending on the type of green-wall model, and the reduction efficiency of the active model was higher than the passive model. Conclusions: The active green-wall model can be used as an efficient method of improving indoor air quality. Additionally, more research is needed to increase the efficiency of improving indoor air quality by setting conditions that can stimulate the growth of each type of plant.

Design of particulate matter reduction algorithm by learning failure patterns of PHM-based air conditioning facilites

  • 본 연구에서 우리는 PHM 기반 공조설비의 연쇄 고장 패턴을 학습하여 미세먼지의 상태를 조절할 수 있는 알고리즘을 설계하였다. 공조설비의 고장으로 인한 공조설비 가동중단과 이로 인한 미세먼지의 확산은 불가피하다. 우리가 개발한 알고리즘은 PHM을 통한 미세먼지 관리 체계를 수립하는 것으로써 공조기 정지/가동 패턴학습을 통하여 일정하게 안정화 상태를 유지하고 이를 기반으로 미세먼지를 관리하는 알고리즘이다. 알고리즘의 성능을 평가하기 위해 지하철 역 내에서 시뮬레이션 한 결과, 미세먼지의 농도가 평균 30% 감소하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 지하철 이용 승객이 많은 역의 경우 미세먼지 농도가 환경부 기준(100㎍/m3)을 초과하였지만, 시뮬레이션을 실시한 모든 역에서 미세먼지 농도가 개선되었음을 알 수 있었다. 향후 연구로는 지하철 역사 내의 미세먼지 뿐만아니라 CO2, CO, NO2 등 오염물질을 종합적으로 관리할 수 있도록 시스템을 확장하는 것이다.

양식장 배출수 수질관리를 위한 용존공기부상 공법의 운전 인자 영향 분석 (Analysis of the operating factors of dissolved air flotation (DAF) process for effluent quality improvement from aquaculture rearing tank)

  • Pollutants in aquaculture system effluent mostly originated from solid wastes including uneaten feed and excreta of cultured species. In this research, DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation) unit is suggested as an integrated solid control unit especially as a form of IIBG(Inline Injection Bubble Generation) process in aquaculture system. Solid removal performance of DAF unit was examined under various operation and salinity conditions with turbidity and suspended solid. Solid waste removal efficiencies were found to be affected by operation conditions including saturator pressure, recycle ratio, coagulant concentration. Solid removal efficiency was higher under higher saturator pressure and recycle ratio under which condition larger number of bubbles is generated. Coagulant is thought to have important role in creating bubble-particle aggregate by showing better removal efficiency with higher concentration. However higher saline water showed less effectiveness in removing solids by DAF(IIBG). Application of DAF(IIBG) process also showed additional effect in phosphate removal and DO(Dissolved Oxygen) supply. Phosphate existed in polluted water was removed up to 46% after treatment, which is thought to attribute to aluminium phosphate precipitation. And DO concentration was found to increase over 50% of initial saturation concentration after the injection of micro-bubbles. Through experiments on solid removal from aquaculture effluent, DAF(IIBG) process is estimated to be effective solid control method. This property can help aquaculture system being installed and operated simply and effectively.
