The purpose of the present work is to investigate the removal characteristics of positively charged filters for capturing negatively charged particles such as bacteria and virus in water. In order to reduce the pressure drop and increase the filtration efficiency, the filter media, modified by charge modifier having positive functional groups, is developed and evaluated. Improved liquid filters have been developed with the modified surface charge to capture and adsorb particles by electrokinetic interaction between the filter surface and particles contained in an aqueous liquid. The positively charged filter media is composed of glass fiber, cellulose and poly-ethylenimine resin for positively charging with the variation of volume ratio. The zeta potential value of the positively charged filter is +37.92 mV at the glass fiber and cellulose content ratio of 50 : 50 with resin content of 100%, while that of the PSL test particle is -23.5 mV at pH 7. The removal efficiency of the electro-positively charged filter is 98% for PSL particles of 0.11 ${\mu}m$, while that of the negatively charged filter is 7%. The positively charged filter media showed the potential to be an effective method for removing fine particles from the contaminated water for liquid filtration.
In this study, the performance of an ejector in the refrigeration cycle was experimentally studied using R600a. The performance of the ejector is analyzed according to the inlet pressure and nozzle position. The increase in the primary nozzle pressure decreased the pressure difference across the ejector. In the low entrainment region, the increased suction flow pressure led to an increase in the pressure difference. In the high entrainment region, the pressure difference was inversely proportional to the suction pressure. The effects of nozzle position ($L_n$) were also analyzed and for $L_n<0$, the decreased suction chamber volume led to a large pressure drop with the small increase in the suction mass flow rate. For $L_n>0$, the increased $L_n$ disturbed the primary nozzle flow and thus an increase in the primary nozzle flow increased the pressure lifting effect. In contrast, the increased suction mass flow rate decreased the pressure difference. When the nozzle outlet was located at the mixing part entrance ($L_n=0$), the ejector showed the highest pressure lifting effect.
Although the advance in electronic technology enables a large number of circuity to be packed in a small volume, it is simultaneously required to remove the high heat load produced by them. In this study, the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of a mini-channel heat exchanger, which is designed for liquid cooling of electronic components, are investigated by varying operating conditions. Water and FC-72 were used as working fluids. The mini-channel heat exchanger was made with circular shape channels having din-meters of 2, 3, and 4 mm in regular intervals, and the channel length was 100 mm. The header and inlet guide pathway to provide uniform inflow were attached at the inlet of the test section. Copper block including the heaters was attached at the sidewall of the test section as a heat source, which provided the heat flux from 5 to $15W/cm^2$. The entrance effects enhanced the heat transfer coefficient in the mini-channel significantly. In addition, the single-phase pressure drop in the mini-channel was very similar to that predicted by the laminar flow correlation except that the transition Re decreased due to flow instability in the entrance region.
Supercritical carbon dioxide ($sCO_2$) power system is emerging technology because of its high cycle efficiency and compactness. Meanwhile, PCHE (Printed Circuit Heat Exchanger) is gaining attention in $sCO_2$ power system technology because PCHE with high pressure-resistance and larger heat transfer surface per unit volume is fundamentally needed. Thermo-fluidic characteristics of $sCO_2$ in the micro channel of PCHE should be investigated. In this study, heat transfer characteristics of $sCO_2$ of various inlet conditions and cross-sectional shapes of single micro channel were investigated experimentally. Experiment was conducted at supercritical state of higher than critical temperature and pressure. Test sections were made of copper and hydraulic diameter was 1 mm. Convective heat transfer coefficients were measured according to each interval of the channel and pressure drop was also measured. Convective heat transfer coefficients from experimental data were compared with existing correlation. In this study, using measured data, a new empirical correlation to predict near critical region heat transfer coefficient is developed and suggested. Test results of single channel will be used for design of PCHE.
In the present study, the detailed flow structure and heat transfer characteristics in the newly-designed heat transfer surface geometry were investigated. The surface geometry proposed in the present study is a traditional dimple structure combining with a protrusion inside the dimple, which is named a protrusion-in-dimple in this study. The basic idea underlying the present surface geometry is to enhance the flow mixing and the corresponding heat transfer in the flow re-circulating region generated by a conventional dimple cavity. The present study was performed by the direct numerical simulation at a Reynolds number of 2800 based on mean velocity and channel height and Prandtl number of 0.71. Three different protrusion heights for protrusion-in-dimples were considered as the main design parameter of the present study. The calculated pressure drop and heat transfer capacity were assessed in terms of the Fanning friction factor and Colburn j factor. The overall performances estimated in terms of the volume and area goodness factor for protrusion-in-dimple cases were higher than the conventional dimple case.
In this paper, thermal characteristics of cylindrical grooved wick heat pipes with water-based MWCNT nanofluids as working medium are experimentally investigated. Volume fractions of nanoparticles are varied with 0.1% to 0.5%. Transient hot wire method developed in house is used to measure the thermal conductivity of nanofluids. It is enhanced by up to 29% compared to that of DI water. The thermal resistances and temperature distributions at the surface of the heat pipes are measured at the same evaporation temperature. The experimental results show that the thermal resistance of the heat pipes with water-based MWCNT nanofluids as working fluid is reduced up to 35.2% compared with that of heat pipe using DI water. The reduction rate of thermal resistance is greater than the enhancement rate of thermal conductivity. Finally, based on the experimental results, we present the reduction of the thermal resistances of the heat pipes compared with conventional heat pipes cannot be explained by only the thermal conductivity of water-based MWCNT nanofluids.
In this study, thermodynamic performance of R430A is examined both numerically and experimentally in an effort to replace HFC134a used in the refrigeration system of domestic water purifiers. Even though HFC134a is used predominantly in such a system these days, it needs to be phased out in the near future in Europe and most of the developed countries due to its high global warming potential. To solve this problem, cycle simulation and experimental measurements are carried out with a new refrigerant mixture of 76%R152a124% R600a using actual domestic water purifiers. This mixture is numbered and listed as R430A by ASHRAE recently. Test results show that the system performance with R430A is greatly influenced by the amount of charge due to the small internal volume of the refrigeration system of the domestic water purifiers. With the optimum amount of charge of 21 to 22 grams, about 50% of HFC134a, the energy consumption of R430A is 13.4% lower than that of HFC 134a. The compressor dome and discharge temperatures and condenser center temperature of R430A are very similar to those of HFC134a at the optimum charge. Overall, R430A, a new long term environmentally safe refrigerant, is a good alternative for HFC134a requiring little change in the refrigeration system of the domestic water purifiers.
When aiming to reduce the low frequency noise of a subway guest room through sound absorbing treatment methods inside the wall of a tunnel the resonator is often more effective than a porous sound absorbing material. Therefore, the perforated panel type resonator embedded with a perforated panel is proposed. The perforated panel is installed in the neck, which is then extended into the resonator cavity so that it can ensure useful volume. The absorption performance of the perforated panel type of resonator is obtained by acoustic analysis and experiment. The analytical results are in good agreement with the experimental results. In the case of multiple perforated panel type resonators, as the number of perforated panels increase, the 1st resonance frequency is moved to a low frequency band and sound absorption bandwidth is extended on the whole. In order to obtain excellent absorption performance, the impedance matching between multi-panels should be considered. When the perforated panel in the resonator is combined with a porous material, the absorption performance is highly enhanced in the anti-resonance and high frequency range. In case of the resonator inserted with perforated panels of 2, the 2nd resonance frequency is shifted to a low frequency band in proportion to the distance between perforated panels.
Multipurpose Dam, it produces electric energy by converting the potential energy into kinetic energy utilizing its head and quantity of the water. However, in this process, since during the time when the turbine connected to the hydraulic turbine generator revolves, there occurs a ceaseless loud noise, and due to this condition, it is true state that those people who work at inside of the power plant are damaging as hard as they are unable to concentrate on their work. Not only this, because the hydro-electric power generator room that locates at middle section between the hydraulic turbine room and the office is very large space volume, also since it was constructed chiefly by the reflecting material, it is functioning of amplify the noise when operating the generator, the soundproof measure against this condition is necessitated. On such viewpoint, I have presented the problem point of the relevant Hydraulic turbine dynamo and Hydraulic turbine dynamo room, and after improve such problem point, this study has ever investigated the satisfying degree about the noise-reduction at before and after of the improvement of soundproof measure, using the Auralizational technique that can experience virtual acoustic field. It is considering that such result could be utilized usefully as the fundamental material hereafter for the acoustic performance of the hydro-electric power generator room in dam and when its construction.
An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of the morphology of CNT on the thermal conductivity of suspensions. The effective thermal conductivities of the samples were measured using asteady-state cut bar apparatus method. Enhancements based on the thermal conductivity of the base fluid are presented as functions of both the volume fraction and the temperature, Although functionalized SWNT produiced a more stable and homogeneous suspension, the addition of small amounts of surfactant to suspensions of 'as produced' SWNT demonstrated a greater increase in effective thermal conductivity than functionalized SWNT alone. The effective thermal conductivity enhancement corresponding to 1.0 percent by volume approached 10%, which was observed to be lower than expected, but more than twice the values, 3.5%, obtained for similar tests conducted using aluminum oxide suspensions. However, for suspensions of MWNT, the degree of enhancement was measured to be approximately 37%. It was postulated that the effect of clustering, resulting from the multiple heat-flow passages constituted by interconnecting neighboring CNT clusters, played an important role in significant enhancement of effective thermal conductivity.
