  • Screw compressor type chillers are widely used in refrigeration for capacity over 30 RT. In general, chillers operate under part-load conditions. Therefore, information on characteristics at part-load is very important in view of chiller performance and energy economy. In this study, performance tests of part-load and economizer system using R22 and R407C have been performed for various secondary fluid temperatures. Adoption of an economizer system increased the cooling capacity and improved COP except for lower part-load condition when injection volume ratio is 1.01. For the same cooling capacity condition at part-load, COP of both non-economizer and economizer system showed similar values.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the characteristics of heat transfer in a vertical type fluidized bed shell-and-tube type heat exchanger with corrugated tube. Seven different solid particles having the same volume were circulated in the heat of exchanger. The effects of various parameters such as water flow rates, particle geometries, materials, and corrugated tube geometries were investigated. The present work showed that the higher thermal capacities of materials and the geometries closer to the spherical one have higher heat transfer performances. In addition, heat transfer coefficients in the corrugated tubes were a little higher than those in the smooth tubes.

  • In this study the optimization of plate-fin type heat sink for the thermal stability is peformed numerically. The optimum design variables are obtained when the temperature rise and the pressure drop are minimized simultaneously. The flow and thermal fields are predicted using the finite volume method and the optimization is carried out by using the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method which is widely used in the constrained non-linear optimization problem. The results show that when the temperature rise is less than 34.6K, the optimal design variables are as follows; B$_1$=2.468mm, B$_2$=1.365mm, and t=10.962mm. The Pareto optimal solutions are also presented for the pressure drop and the temperature rise.

  • A FORTRAN code has been developed to calculate thermodynamic properties of 12 kinds of refrigerants. Input variables are temperature and pressure or temperature only depending on the saturation. The program output properties are specific volume, saturation pressure, enthalpy, entropy, specific heats and speed of sound. Sample calculations show that output properties are in very good agreements with thermodynamic tables and charts.

  • In recent years, attention of ship owners for the energy saving of the vessel is being collected due to the volume decline. Ship accommodation consists of watertight type windows and is closed, Ship HVAC is used to promote a comfortable environment for the crew. In addition requirements for comfort of the crew is getting stronger with the improvement of living standards, there is a need for HVAC improvements. In this paper, propose method to save energy and improve HVAC controls by using the HVAC structure of the variable air volume.

  • R-410a and R-407c which have the best potential among R-22 alternatives were tested as drop-in refrigerants against a set of R-22 baseline tests. The performance evaluations were carried out in a psychometric calorimeter test facility using the residential spilt type air conditioner under the ARI rating conditions. Except the lubricant and hand-operated expansion valve, the other parts of the air conditioner were the same with the commercial system. Performance characteristics were measured; compressor power, capacity, VCR, mass flow rate and COP. The tests showed that R-407c can be directly charged into the current refrigeration system because its vapor pressure and other thermochemical properties are similar to those of R-22. However, it is required to change the volume flow rate of compressor in order to achieve the volumetric capacity of R-22. This results from its relatively small VCR and capacity. Meanwhile, R-410a has vapor pressure values too high to be substituted for the current system and this resulted relatively low COP of R-410a compared to that of R-22.

  • We propose a control scheme to control the indoor zone temperature via variable air volume (VAV) unit. To control the room temperature, state space model of the conditioned zone which is partitioned into nine artificial sectional regions is derived. The nonlinearity of the damper motion and actuator are considered for the practical use in the state space system description. The temperature control of the room temperature is performed by manipulating the degree of openness of the damper in relation to the local room temperature and the supplied air flow rate. In general, since a local temperature in the conditioned zone is measured, it is required to estimate the temperature values in each regions for the precise temperature control. We thus design a state observer to estimate the regional temperature, and use these values in the controller. The overall control system consists of the state observer based state feedback with the integral control. We compared the control results of the proposed scheme with those of cascade proportional and integral (PI) control, and showed that the scheme achieved precise control of the conditioned system.

  • The fin and tube type heat exchangers widely used in air conditioners have been developed to improve on the heat transfer performance and compactness. This study presents the new type of tube for the heat exchanger to improve the heat transfer performance by increasing the heat transfer area per unit volume in the air-conditioner heat exchanger. The new type tube can be used for mechanical expansion facility, due to the two-port copper tube. Numerical calculation shows that the heat exchanger using the two-port copper tube outperforms the conventional heat-exchanger using a circular copper tube, in terms of the increased heat transfer coefficient and higher pressure drop. The calculation results were experimentally validated and are in agreement with the experimental results. Compared to the heat exchanger using a conventional circular tube, the heat exchanger with a two-port tube increased the heat transfer coefficient up to 21%, and the pressure dropped up to 16%.

  • One of the biggest problems in smoke control systems for high-rise buildings is stack effect, but there are no recognized methods or measures to solve the problem of stack effect as yet. The stack effect can be overcome by forming the uprising current inside the stair hall properly, but there is a limit to the height in supplying into the stair hall the smoke control air volume to be supplied to a floor in case of escape from fire. The limit to the height can be extended by over-coming the stack effect by pressurizing the stair hall and the ancillary room simultaneously. It can also be anticipated that the stack effect can be overcome by connecting the air supply shaft to the stair hall at the top. As a result of computer simulations using a network type of tool, it is found that adequate performance can be achieved by pressurizing the stair hall only for a building of 190m or less, and up to 360m when pressurizing the stair hall and the ancillary room simultaneously. In all those cases, however, an overpressure venting damper is required which operates within a suitable range for venting the overpressure outside.

  • Radioactivity of high concentrations have existed in the handling nuclear materials in hot cell of PIEF(Post Irradiation Examination Facility). The exhaust filtration system was enabled to process cylindrical filters by using a manipulator in the hot cell. By establishing a double filtration system with two filters, backup protection against leakage or failure of the first is provided by the second filter. Additionally, this a arrangement is arrange intended to increase the total filtration efficiency. The result of the pressure drop changing in the air flow of the cylindrical and HEPA filters is observed by a curved line. A filtering efficiency of more than 99.99% to $0.3{\mu}m$ particle appears in the upstream and downstream during the efficiency test on the HEPA filters. The V-pleats type had a lower pressure drop than the separator type. There was no damage during usage and was found to be suitable with high capacity of air volume. Therefore, by carrying out performance tests of the exhaust filtration system, efficiency and safety can be achieved.
