Emission Characteristics of Hazardous Air Pollutants from Diesel Heavy Duty Buses for Euro 5 according to After-treatment Systems (배출가스 저감장치에 따른 Euro 5 경유 대형버스의 유해대기오염물질 배출특성)

  • Emission characteristics of regulated (NOx, PM, CO, NMHC) and unregulated (VOCs, aldehydes, PAHs) air pollutants were investigated for diesel heavy duty buses equipped with different after-treatment systems (DPF+EGR and SCR) under urban driving cycle. The combustion temperature and the working temperature of SCR catalysts were important to make impact on NOx emissions, whereas PM emissions were low. The alkane groups dominated NMVOCs emissions, making 42.6~59.4% of sum of the NMVOCs emissions. Especially, alkane emissions of DPF+EGR-equipped vehicle included DOC had 14.9~15.5% higher than those of SCR-equipped vehicle due to low efficiency of oxidation catalyst. In the case of individual NMVOCs, n-nonane and propylene emissions highly occupied for DPF+EGR and SCR, respectively. Formaldehyde emissions among aldehydes were the highest and PAHs emissions were hardly detected except naphthalene and phenanthrene. The NMHC speciation has been shown to be the highest of the formaldehyde ranged 20.8~21.5%. The results of this study will be contributed to establish Korean HAPs emission inventory for automobile source.

  • An experimental study was conducted to observe the spray characteristics for different flow rates and rotating speeds of a rotating fuel nozzle of a slinger combustor. The water spray ejected from the nozzle orifice was visualized using a high-speed camera and a light source. It was confirmed that the atomization was improved, as the flow rate decreased and rotating speed increased. The characteristic maps for the spray characteristics and performance parameters showed that the aerodynamic Weber number and the liquid-air momentum flux ratio were associated with the liquid primary breakup, and the liquid-air momentum flux ratio and Rossby number were closely correlated with the liquid ejection mode.

A Study on Exhaust Gas Characteristics of Heavy-duty Diesel Engines through Actual Vehicle Application of Non-influenced Temperature Condition Type Active Regeneration Method (온도조건 비영향형 복합재생방식 DPF의 실차적용을 통한 대형디젤기관의 배출가스 특성 연구)

  • Cars are one of the main causes of air pollution in large cities, and 34.6% of domestic air pollution emissions come from mobile sources, of which cars account for 69.6%. In particular, the importance of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM), which are major pollutants in diesel vehicles, is increasing due to their high contribution to emissions. Therefore, in this study, the problem of natural regeneration caused by low exhaust gas temperature during low speed and low load operation was solved by applying a complex regeneration DPF that is not affected by temperature conditions to large diesel vehicles with higher driving time and engine displacement than small and medium-sized vehicles. And the feasibility of application to large diesel vehicles was reviewed by measuring the emission reduction efficiency. As a result of the reduction efficiency test on the actual vehicle durability product, PM showed a reduction efficiency of 84% to 86%, and the reduction efficiency of gaseous substances showed a high reduction efficiency of over 90%. The actual vehicle applicability test was completed with three driving patterns: village bus vehicle, police car, and road-going construction equipment vehicle, and no device problems occurred until the end of the test. Both load and no-load smoke measurement results showed a smoke reduction efficiency of over 96%.

  • The effects of barley tea concentration and atomizing air pressure on the size, homogeneity and distribution of the sprayed droplets were investigated. An equation relating mean diameter (${\overline{D}}$) with the concentration where the coefficient a and b were determined empirically. As the operating air pressure was increased, the mean diameter of the droplets decreased and finally reached the limiting mean diameter, $36{\mu}m$ at 15.7% barley tea concentration. The homogeneity of the droplets increased with the operating air pressure, increase and it was decreased steadily as the soluble solid concentration increased up to 20% and markedly over 20% at every operating air pressure. The distribution ($P_D$) of sprayed droplets related with the droplet size as the following exponential equation; $P_D$ = e 1nD + f where e and f are empirical constants.

Investigation of dust particle removal efficiency of self-priming venturi scrubber using computational fluid dynamics

  • A venturi scrubber is an important element of Filtered Containment Venting System (FCVS) for the removal of aerosols in contaminated air. The present work involves computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study of dust particle removal efficiency of a venturi scrubber operating in self-priming mode using ANSYS CFX. Titanium oxide ($TiO_2$) particles having sizes of 1 micron have been taken as dust particles. CFD methodology to simulate the venturi scrubber has been first developed. The cascade atomization and breakup (CAB) model has been used to predict deformation of water droplets, whereas the Eulerian-Lagrangian approach has been used to handle multiphase flow involving air, dust, and water. The developed methodology has been applied to simulate venturi scrubber geometry taken from the literature. Dust particle removal efficiency has been calculated for forced feed operation of venturi scrubber and found to be in good agreement with the results available in the literature. In the second part, venturi scrubber along with a tank has been modeled in CFX, and transient simulations have been performed to study self-priming phenomenon. Self-priming has been observed by plotting the velocity vector fields of water. Suction of water in the venturi scrubber occurred due to the difference between static pressure in the venturi scrubber and the hydrostatic pressure of water inside the tank. Dust particle removal efficiency has been calculated for inlet air velocities of 1 m/s and 3 m/s. It has been observed that removal efficiency is higher in case of higher inlet air velocity.

Numerical Study on the Evaporation Characteristics of Biocrude-oil Produced by Fast Pyrolysis (급속열분해를 통하여 생산된 바이오오일 액적의 증발 특성에 관한 수치해석적 연구)

  • Biomass is regarded as one of the promising energy sources to deal with the depletion of fossil fuels and the global warming issue. Biocrude-oil can be produced through the fast pyrolysis of biomass feedstocks such as wood, crops, agricultural and forestry residues. It has significantly higher viscosity than that of conventional petroleum fuel and contains solid residues, which can lower the spray and atomization characteristics when applied to the burner. In addition, biocrude-oil consists of hundreds of chemical species derived from cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, and evaporation characteristics of the biocrude-oil droplet are distinct from the conventional fuels. In the present study, a numerical study was performed to investigate the evaporation characteristics of biocrude-oil droplet using a simplified composition of the model biocrude-oil which consists of acetic acid, levoglucosan, phenol, and water. The evaporation characteristics of droplets were compared at various surrounding air temperatures, initial droplet diameters, and ethanol mixing ratios. The evaporation time becomes shorter with increasing air temperature, and it is much sensitive to the air temperature particularly in low temperature ranges. It was also found that the biocrude-oil droplet evaporates faster in cases of the smaller initial droplet diameter and larger ethanol mixing ratio.

Effect of Weber Number and Momentum Flux Ratio on Macroscopic Characteristics of Spray from a Coaxial Porous Injector (웨버수 및 운동량 플럭스비에 따른 동축형 다공성재 분사기의 거시적 분무특성)

  • The gas jet from a coaxial porous injector for two-phase flows is discharged from the porous surface, which encloses the center liquid jet, and the gas and liquid jet interact with each other physically. The wall injected gas jet transfers the radial momentum effectively while the radial gas jet develops to axial jet, and the performance of atomizing and mixing can be improved. In this study, the Weber number and the ratio of momentum flux were controlled by changing the gas injection area and the mass flow rate of the gas jet, and a study on the spray characteristics at the cold-flow test using water and air simulant was performed. It is concluded that the radial momentum transfer concept of a coaxial porous injector gives a positive effect on the atomization and mixing of the two-phase spray.

Speed-dependent Emission Characteristics of the Hazardous Air Pollutants from Diesel Medium-duty Trucks according to Emission Standards (배출허용기준 강화에 따른 차속별 경유 중형트럭의 유해대기오염물질 배출특성)

  • This study was designed to investigate the emission characteristics of unregulated pollutants (Aldehyde, VOCs, PAHs) as well as regulated pollutants (CO, HC, NOx and PM) from diesel medium-duty trucks. The emission characteristics of unregulated and regulated pollutants were assessed based on regulation standards (EURO 4 and EURO 5) and intake weight (2.5 ton and 5 ton). The results show that unregulated and regulated pollutants remained almost unchanged at higher speeds but decreased at below 23.5 km/h. Reduction in unregulated and regulated pollutants was noticeable in vehicles of recent regulation standards and light intake weight. The analysis of aldehyde using UPLC showed that formaldehyde and acetaldehyde of aldehyde were most dominant. The GC/MS analysis showed that benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene of VOCs was over 80% followed by toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene and benzene. In addition, the analysis of PAHs using GC/TOF-MS indicated that bi- and tricyclic aromatic ring of aromatic compounds was 73% and 53% at 2.5 ton and 5 ton vehicles, respectively. The results of this study will be contributed to establish HAPs inventory.

An Experimental Study on Spray Characteristics of Directly Injected Bio-Ethanol-Gasoline Blended Fuel By Varying Fuel Temperature (직접분사식 바이오 에탄올-가솔린 혼합연료의 연료온도에 따른 분무 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • As environment problem became a worldwide issue, countries are tightening regulations regarding greenhouse gas reduction and improvement of air pollution problems. With these circumstances, one of the renewable energies produced from biomass is getting attention. Bio-ethanol, which is applicable to SI engine, showed a positive effect on the PFI (Port Fuel Injection) type. However, Ethanol has a problem in homogeneous mixture formation because it has high latent heat of vaporization characteristics and in the GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) type, mixture formation is required quickly after fuel injection. Particularly, South Korea is one of the countries with great temperature variation among seasons. With this reason, South Korea supply fuel additive for smooth engine operation during winter. Therefore, experimental study and investigation about application possibility of blending fuel is necessary. This paper demonstrates the spray characteristics by using the CVC direct injection and setting the bio-ethanol blending fuel temperature close to the temperature during each seasons: -7, 25, $35^{\circ}C$. The diameter and the width of the CVC are 86mm and 39mm. High-pressure fuel supply system was used for target injection pressure. High-speed camera was used for spray visualization. The experiment was conducted by setting the injection pressure and ambient pressure according to each temperature of bio-ethanol blending fuel as a parameter. The result of spray visualization experiment demonstrates that as the temperature of the fuel is lower, the atomization quality is lower, and this increase spray penetration and make mixture formation difficult. Injection strategy according to fuel temperature and bio-ethanol blending rate is needed for improving characteristics.

Development and Performance Evaluation of a Liquid Particle Generator (액적 발생 장치 개발 및 성능 평가)

  • In this work, we developed and evaluated the Liquid Particle Generator for generating fine particles in the air. The Liquid Particle Generator, which was based on the spray-evaporation method, had two kinds of orifices: 0.3 mm and 0.5 mm. The Liquid Particle Generator was operated at different pressure between 1 bar and 4 bars to find relationship between input pressure and droplet output rate. In addition, the size distribution of the droplets generated by the Liquid Particle Generator with different orifices was measured by the SMPS system and the optical particle counter. As a result, it was shown that the Liquid Particle Generator with 0.3 mm orifice generated droplets of around 0.3 ${\mu}m$ and atomized particles very stably. The Liquid Particle Generator having 0.5 mm orifice generated bigger droplets, compared with the Liquid Particle Generator with 0.3 mm orifice. Additionally, in these Liquid Particle Generators (0.3 mm and 0.5 mm orifice), little coagulation of particles did occur because of fine droplets atomized by the jet. Therefore, the Liquid Particle Generator could be used as an aerosol generator for atomizing fine particles.
