  • A 2U cube satellite called SNUGLITE has been developed by GNSS Research Laboratory in Seoul National University. Its main mission is to perform actual operation by mounting dual-frequency global positioning system (GPS) receivers. Its scientific mission aims to observe space environments and collect data. It is essential for a cube satellite to control an Earth-oriented attitude for reliable and successful data transmission and reception. To this end, an attitude estimation and control algorithm, Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS), has been implemented in the on-board computer (OBC) processor in real time. In this paper, the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) was employed as the attitude estimation algorithm. For the attitude control technique, the Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) was utilized. The algorithm was verified through the processor in the loop simulation (PILS) procedure. To validate the ADCS algorithm in the ground, the experimental verification via a single axis Hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) was used due to the simplicity and cost effectiveness, rather than using the 3-axis HILS verification (Schwartz et al. 2003) with complex air-bearing mechanism design and high cost.

  • To analysis of the embanked slope stability using a jointed reinforcement, the internal stability and the external stability have to be satisfied, respectively. But, because the lengths of ready-made steel-grid were limited, the reinforcements must be connecting themselves to the reinforcing. In this study, the mechanical test was carried out to investigate the tensile failure and the pullout failure at the joint parts of them, which was based on the analysis of reinforced slope in field. Through the tensile tests in mid-air for the jointed steel-grid, the deformation behavior was seriously observed as follows : deformation of longitudinal member, plastic deformation of longitudinal member and of crank part. Those effects were due to the confining pressure and overburden pressure of the surrounding ground. The bearing resistance at jointed part of jointed steel-grid was due to the latter only. The maximum tensile forces were higher about 20kN~27kN than ultimate pullout resistance, but, the results of those was almost the same in mid-soil. The failures of steel-grid occurred at welded point both of longitudinal members and transverse members and of jointed parts. The strength of jointed parts itself got pullout force about 20kN, which was about 65% for ultimate pullout force of the longitudinal members N=2. To the stability analysis of reinforced structure including the reinforced slope, the studying of connection effects at jointed part of reinforcement members must be considered. Through the results of them, the stability of reinforced structures should be satisfied.

  • The microstructure of medium-carbon non-heat treated steels by air-cooling shows ferritepearlite structure. Compared to the conventional Q/T steels, the strength of these steels containing V, Nb and Ti are similar to Q/T steels. However, their toughness are inferior. In this study, the mechanical properties and microstructures of low-carbon Mo bearing steels produced by direct-quenching process were investigated. Especially, the effect of Mo on the direct-quenched steels was examined. The direct-quenched steels containing Mo were found to have higher strength and toughness. Mo seemed to be effective in producing the fine structure and dense precipitates because of decreasing transformation temperature. The best results were 1211 MPa in UTS and 127.5 J in toughness in the oil quenched 0.15C+O.llV+ 0.035Nb+ 1.81Mo steel. Compared to 0.4% C microalloyed steels, this results showed that UTS increased by 45% and toughness by 2 times.

  • Prosthetic rehabilitation of an edentulous patient who has a maxillary defect is difficult to achieve for many clinicians. The maxillary defect causes leakage of air during pronunciation and compromises denture stability, support and retention by reducing denture-bearing area and breaking peripheral seal. In these patients, the sizes and shapes of defects are very important factors which attribute to prognosis of maxillary obturators. This case report shows the prosthetic rehabilitation of the patient who had maxillectomy on the right maxillary sinus because of squamous cell carcinoma. The patient had a stepwise treatment protocol which started with pre-operative dental examination and followed by surgical, interim and definitive obturation phase. In this case, an acceptable level of retention could be obtained due to well-defined static defects and the preserved premaxillae and the patient was satisfied with the result of the treatment in the aspect of function and esthetics.

  • Water pipes manufactured using existing Portland cement suffer from the problem of rapid deterioration and reduced durability due to the hydration product of cement being vulnerable to acids. Therefore, in this study, water pipes were manufactured using slag and fly ash, which are industrial by-products from various industries, and their characteristics were analyzed. As a result of the experiment, slump in unhardened concrete tended to increase due to the ball bearing action of fly ash, and the amount of air was reduced due to unburned coal, indicating that measures for frost resistance were needed. In addition, the initial strength of the compressive strength was increased through steam curing, and the results were equal to or better than OPC when mixing more than 50 % of slag. The acid resistance results showed that the mass reduction rate was less than 5 %, showing excellent durability performance, and the bending failure load of the water pipe also exceeded the KS standards, so it is judged to be commercializable.

  • In traditional international law, a state was internationally responsible only for its activities. With the diversification of the subjects of international law and with the expansion of state's activities, however, bearing international responsibility by the state for its nationals or private enterprises has been recognised in international case law and states practices. Also, this was codified in 2001 by International Law Commission, finishing Draft articles on Responsibility of States for Internationally Wrongful Acts. Yet, international responsibility of state for private entities carrying out space activities including launching of satellites and space launch vehicles has been dealt with as an exception from state responsibility in general international law. As we have seen the successful launching of 'Falcon Heavy' by SpaceX which is an american private entity, the private activities in outer space are expanding to even as far as deep space such as Mars. In other words, the scope of the private activities is too enormous to deal with the activities, irrespective of general theories on state responsibility in international law. Therefore, it will be significant to see the constituent elements of state responsibility for private activities in outer space from the point of general international law, without prejudice to provisions related to international space law.

  • This paper proposes an enhanced algorithm for sensorless control of 45,000rpm/22kw type Permanent Magnetic Synchronous Motor (PMSM) with air-foil bearing. The proposed algorithm is based on iterative adaptive flux observer for sensorless control of the motor in wide speed range by on-line estimating angle and velocity of rotor. Simulation error between actual and estimated angle of rotor is analyzed to enhance characteristics of frequency response of conventional adaptive flux observer, which results in stable response in wide range of speed. Using the iteration number for stable phase-delay characteristics, the observer enhances the dynamic characteristics of the observer within current control period. The experiment results show the reliable performance of the proposed algorithm through starting to high speed operating range.

  • Micron size Co-alloy(T800) powder was coated on Inconel 718 by HVOF thermal spraying for the studies of the improvement of durability of high speed spindle by using Taguchi program for the parameters of spray distance, flow rates of hydrogen and oxygen and powder feed rate. The optimal coating process was determined by the studies of coating properties such as micro-structure, porosity, surface roughness and micro hardness. Friction and wear behaviors of coatings were investigated by sliding wear test at room temperature and $1000^{\circ}F(538^{\circ}C)$. At both room temperature and $538^{\circ}C$ the sliding wear debris and friction coefficients of the coating were drastically reduced compared with the surface of non-coated parent material. This shows that Co-alloy powder coating is highly recommendable for the durability improvement surface coating of high speed air-bearing spindle. At high temperature wear traces and friction coefficients of both coating and non-coating were drastically reduced compared with those of room temperature since the brittle oxides were formed easily on the surface, and the brittle oxide phases were attrited by the reciprocating sliding wear according to the complicated mixed wear mechanisms These oxide particles, partially melts and the melts play role as lubricant and reduce the wear and friction coefficient. This also shows that Co-alloy powder coating is highly recommendable far the durability improvement surface coating on the surface vulnerable to frictional heat such as high speed spindles.

  • Under the Irradiation of the radiofrequency wave, the dipole materials vibrate as microwavic phase change. This causes friction between adjacent molecules and enables an unique charateristics of interior heating of the materials. When dipole gases are adsorbed inside of a solid radiofrequency wave absorber, the gases can be decomposed easily by the microwave energy. The decomposition of sour gases was successfully tested in this manner to develop a sour gas removal process from the combustion flue gas. The standard gas bearing NO and $SO_2$ was passed through and microwave was applied on the calcined char bed as the wave absorber and the gas adsorbent. It was found that more then 95% of NO and 70 % of $SO_2$ was decomposed to the environmentally clean elements during the passage through the 20 gram char bed under the microwave impingement. The surface area and the porosity of char increased because the oxygen radicals produced from decomposed gas attacked carbon in the char capillaries and formed $CO_2$. For a lower concentration of sour gas, general cases in the commercial combustion processes, almost complete decomposion is believed possible and this method is surely expected to be useful for the prevention of air pollutions.
