Monitoring/Control System for Cylindrical Plunge Grinding (원통 프런지 연삭공정의 감시/제어 시스템)

  • This paper presents monitoring and control system to decrease non-production time such as air grinding and partial contact in cylindrical plunge grindings. The 4-stage model of the plunge grinding process is proposed according to the state of contact between grinding wheel and workpiece; air grinding, partial contact, entire contact and spark out. Experimentally it is seen that the AE sensor and ultrasonic sensor are very effective to detect the grinding states. Monitoring and control algorithm using recognized grinding process was introduced and a experiment were conducted to verify the developed system.

Development of Air-cell Mattress for Preventing Pressure Ulcer Using Anthropometric Model (인체계측 모델을 이용한 욕창방지용 공기셀 매트리스의 개발)

  • Air mattress is now used widely to prevent the pressure ulcer by reducing the localized pressure peaks. The pressure control method based on the anthrophometric model of an air-cell mattress developed in this study is presented. The air-cell mattress has 18 cylindrical air cells made of porous material allowing air leakage. Even though the air leakage can contribute to reducing the development of pressure ulcer by lowering the pressure peak, temperature and humidity, the air pressure changes with time and the desired air-cell pressure has to be determined as an optimal value for each user. To select the desired air-cell pressure, we first divide the parts of the body into four sections such as head, trunk, hip, and leg. Then, the pressure of each section grouped with air-cells is calculated from the weight of each part estimated from the individual height and body weight. Air supply system for the air-cell mattress is implemented by using four electronic solenoid valves and an air compressor, and it is driven by a real-time microcontroller. We experimented with five subjects of the contact pressure on skin. The experimental results show that the proposed air-cell mattress is effective for the prevention of the pressure ulcer.

Non-linear PID Tension Control in a Winding Process with a Contact Roll and a Nip Roll (접압롤 및 보조닙롤이 있는 권취공정에서의 장력의 비선형 PID제어)

  • The contact roll is often used to regulate the winding tension as well as the entrained air in a wound roll by adjusting the contact force to the winding roll. But the contact force generated by other rolls, like assistant nip rolls, in a winding(or roll changing) process may act as disturbance to the control of the winding tension. In this paper, the mechanism of a roll change process is analysed. Ana, the behavior of the contact and the nip rolls are mathematically modeled. A nonlinear PID(NPID) controller is designed to control the winding tension and to reject the effect of disturbance generated by the nip roll on the winding tension variation. Computer simulation study showed that the performance of the suggested NPID controller is improved compared with that of the PID controller in controlling the winding tension and in rejecting the effect of the disturbance.

  • Non-contact power supply (NCPS), as a clean and safe energy supply concept has been applying wildly. Comparing with the conventional transformer the non-contact transformer has a large air gap between the long primary winding and the secondary winding. Due to it, the non-contact transformer has increased leakage inductance and reduced magnetizing inductance. So the high frequency series resonant converter has been widly used on the non-contact power supply system for transferring the primary power to the secondary one, from what a high influence voltage can be gained on the secondry coil even though the large air gap exists. However, it still has the disadvantages of the load sensitive voltage gain characteristics when load is changing. In this paper, we propose a fuzzy logic controller to adjust the frequency of the inverter to track the resonat which is changing when the load is change.

  • In a web winding process, the contact roll plays many important roles including air-entrainment control and WIT(Wound In Tension) regulation. The behavior of contact roll significantly affects the winding tension characteristics specifically at the time of contact when the speeds of contact roll and the winding roll are not synchronized. A mathematical model for the web, the winding roll, and the contact roll is derived. By using the model derived, a nonlinear PID(NPID) controller is designed to control the winding tension at the time of contact and separation between the contact roll and the winding roll. Computer simulation study showed that the performance of the winding system with the NPID controller significantly improved compared with that of a system with PID controller.

Study on Non-contact Ultrasonic Transducer for Measurement of Fruit Firmness (과실 경도측정을 위한 비접촉 초음파 변환기 연구)

  • This study was conducted to develop an non-contact ultrasonic transducer for measurement of fruit firmness. The center frequency of non-contact ultrasonic transducer was 500 kHz. As an active element of non-contact ultrasonic transducer, the 1-3 piezoelectric composite material was selected. That material has high piezoelectric properties such as electro-mechanical coupling factor, $k_t$ and piezoelectric voltage constant, $d_{33}$ and also that material has low acoustical impedance which enables to matching the acoustical impedances between piezoelectric material and air. As a front matching material between 1-3 piezoelectric composite material and air, various kinds of paper with different thickness were tested. To control the dead-zone of the fabricated non-contact ultrasonic transducer, the backing material composed of epoxy resin and tungsten powder were made and evaluated. The fabricated non-contact ultrasonic transducer for fruit showed that the cneter frequency, bandwidth and beamwidth were approximately 480 kHz, 30 % and 12 mm, respectively. It was concluded that non-contact measurement of apple firmness would be possible by using the fabricated non-contact ultrasonic transducer.

Optimization of Nozzle Arrangement in a Liquid Direct Contact Cooling System : Constant Inlet Flowrate Analysis (액체식 직접 접촉 냉각장치의 노즐배열 최적화 : 정풍량 해석)

  • For the design of a liquid direct contact cooling system, thermal and hydraulic analysis has been carried out. Well-known Zukauskas correlations are used to estimate the Nusselt number between the liquid refrigerant columns and the inlet airflow. The inlet air velocity is set at a typical value used in an actual showcase. For a constant column number, the best nozzle arrangement is determined for the maximum heat transfer. Heat transfer increases as the transverse pitch of the refrigerant column decreases. Among all the cases dealt with in the present study, the staggered arrangement with 140-columns of $14{\times}10$ shows the best thermal peformance and the expected temperature drop is $27.8^{\circ}C$. The effect of downstream refrigerant columns on the overall thermal performance is investigated as well.

Design Characteristics of Non-Contact Type Seal for High Speed Spindle (고속주축용 비접촉 시일의 형상설계 연구)

  • Sealing of lubricant-air mixture in the high performance machining center is one of most the important characteristics to carry out enhanced lubrication. High speed spindle requires non-contact type of sealing mechanism. Evaluating an optimum seal design to minimize leakage is concerned in the aspect of flow control. Effect of geometry and leakage path are evaluated according to variation of sealing geometry. Velocity, pressure, turbulence intensity of profile is calculated to find more efficient geometry and variables. This offers a methodological way of enhancement seal design for high speed spindle. The working fluid is regarded as two phases that are mixed flow of oil phase and air phase. It is more reasonable to simulate an oil jet or oil mist type high speed spindle lubrication. Turbulence and compressible flow model are used to evaluate a flow characteristic. This paper considers a design effect of sealing capability of non- contact type seals for high speed spindle and analyzes leakage characteristics to minimize a leakage 7 on the same sealing area.

  • Air grinding time in grinding process has a great effect on its efficiency due to low feedrate. This paper presents a reduction methos of air grinding time in cylindrical plunge grinding operation. Tje reduction of air grinding time is accomplished by finding the distance between contact point and rising point of ultra- sonic signal of the grinding wheel to workpiece. It uses a variation of sound signal generated by the flow of coolant when the grinding wheel approaches to workpiece. The ultrasonic sensor with 23 kHz center fre- quency and 8 kHz bandwidth is used to find the nearest approaching point(NAP). Monitoring and control system of the grinding conditions is implemented with CNC controller to control feedrate override and ultrasonic sensor to find NAP. The experimental result shows that the ultrasonic signal is a good measure- ment to find NAP. But it needs the considerations for the effect of the relationship between flowrate of coolant and diameter of workpiece.
