The steady, incompressible developing 3-dimensional turblent flow in a square sectioned curved duct has been investigated by using partially-parabolic equation and Finite Analytic Method. The calculation of turbulent flow field is performed using 2-equation K-$\epsilon$ turbulence model, modified wall function, simpler algorithm and numerically generated body fitted coordinates. Iso-mean velocity contours at the various sections are compared with the existing experimental data and elliptic solutions by other authors. In the region of $0^{\circ}<{\theta}<71^{\circ}$, present results agree with the experimental data much better than the elliptic solution for the similar number of grid points. Furthermore, for the same tolerance, the present solution converges four times faster than the elliptic solution.
Analysis of fluid flow in rectangular ducts has been conducted since it has a wide application. The purpose is to provide experimental data for the comparison with computational results. Velocity distributions inside a rectangular duct with $90^{\circ}$ mitered elbow are measured by 5W laser doppler velocity meter for Reynolds numbers of 4,049, 8,104, and 12,186. Flow rates obtained by the integration of measured velocity profile at three cross-sections, which are inlet, middle section after the elbow, and outlet, have errors less than 0.9% among them. Turbulent fluctuation components in two directions are found to have almost similar magnitude each other at a certain location due to the isotropic characteristic of turbulence.
Flue gas from apartment heating gas boiler is exhausted outside through an exhaust duct mounted horizontally in a vertical row on the wall. The flue gas includes nitrogen-oxides (NOx) and carbon monoxide. To investigate the possible entrainment of the flue gas into the apartments through the windows, a large eddy simulation (LES) based numerical method is utilized. Distribution of the velocity intensity and temperature around the exhaust ducts is presented for three numerical parameters: exhaust velocity, temperature of the flue gas, and exhaust duct length. The flow field visualized with particles inserted at the ends of the ducts is also presented. The results clearly show that the exhausted flue gas may flow into the apartments when the windows are open.
In the present study, the entrance length, velocity profiles and waveforms of developing transitional steady flows in a square duct are investigated analytically and experimentally. The systems of conservation equations for transitional steady duct flows are solved analytically by linearizing non-linear convective terms and adoption of modified eddy viscosity from empirical correlations. Analytical solutions of velocity profiles for developing transitional steady flow were obtained in the form of infinite series. The experimental study for transitional steady flow in a square duct with $40mm{\times}40mm{\times}4000mm$($width{\times}height{\times}length$) was carried out to measure velocity profiles and other parameters by using a hot-wire anemometer with data acquisition and processing system. The entrance length of developing transitional steady flows in a square duct was $L_e{\fallingdotseq}0.02{\cdot}Re,st{\cdot}D_h$, and the overshoot was occured at about 30 times of hydraulic diameter because of the effect of external velocity of boundary layer and instantaneous acceleration.
The machinery ventilation system in case of using the window nature ventilation is difficult due to strong outdoor wind pressure is common ventilation measure. increasing height and decreasing economical efficiency problem because of ventilation duct installation is rising and a measure is urgent. The purpose of this study is analysis required height according to each ventilation system and development of ventilation duct system to reducing height and model testing.
In this study, a tracer gas technique was used to measure ventilation effectiveness in a thermal environmental chamber simulating an under-floor air conditioning system. A tracer gas of $SF_6$ was injected in a supply duct using step-up and step-down methods. Local mean ages and room mean ages were calculated from the measured concentrations under isothermal and cooling conditions with and without diffusers. Ventilation effectiveness is found to be higher in cooling ventilation operations than in isothermal operations. Results also show that ventilation effectiveness is not significantly affected by a diffuser.
Purpose: As the improvement in quality of medical environment and the spatial consideration for the prevention of infection in the hospital have become increasingly important in the recent years, specific and practical planning for air conditioning room's area has become a major issue accordingly. However, the air conditioning room tends to be discussed focusing on technical factors such as air conditioning systems that are irrelevant to building plans, while discussions of most departments related to the medical functions have actively taken placed. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the factors influencing the planning for the air conditioning room area, and through subsequent analysis of the area of the air conditioning room, to propose a way to improve effective planning for the air conditioning room area. Methods: This study examines the case hospitals that fall into two types: each floor supply system and concentrated supply system, and compares and analyzes the air conditioning room area-related factors and the characteristics of changes in the interior of air conditioning room before and after remodeling through air conditioning floor plan of those case hospitals. Results: The air conditioning room can be classified into the net area of the functional space such as duct passages, and the public area such as aisle space, and of those the public area is an important factor in calculating the area of the air conditioning room. The public area of the air-conditioning room should not be planned considering only the spaces for mobile passage or maintenance activities, but should be planned taking into account internal changes such as expansion and replacement of equipment in the future from the beginning. Implications: When planning a medical facility, it is used as basic data for the planning of the air conditioning room area, which is a significant fixed factor in the initial setting.
Accurate flow rate distribution has been become a very important part for controling of air change rate since the introduction of house ventilation system. An inappropriate selection of fan due to Incorrect prediction of friction loss makes waste energy. The purpose of this study is to recognize applicability of T-Method at house ventilation system by comparing experiment with T-method, The result of this study is as follows Flow rate is small amount in a house, so duct size must be accurate. And duct design with Equal Friction Loss Method presented large error range. Equal friction loss method is not fit to applicate small amount air flow rate. T-Method predicts accurate flow rate comparatively in a house ventilation system. Error range was 3.5%.
This paper measures the forced convective heat transfer from heated cylinder to air flow in a rectangular duct at Re$_{D}$ =2,337, 4,589, 6,621 and 7,944 through experiments. And the heat transfer is computed by 3-D numerical computation in which various turbulent models are applied. It is shown through the comparison of experimental and computed data that numerical computation with standard k-$\varepsilon$ model predicts the experimental data most accurately. Furthermore, the correlation from the computed heat transfer is almost similar to that from the experiment when Re$_{D}$ is greater than 4,589. In addition, the correlation of McAdams is the closest to that from experimental data among various correlations from literature in the range of Reynolds number.ber.
It is a critical task to keep the ventilation system working in a proper and efficient manner in large multi-storey buildings, and the enthalpy exchanger is becoming an increasingly important part of the ventilation system by playing the function of channeling heat and moisture. We present a computational study on the heat transfer performance of the cross-flow enthalpy exchanger, which is in large use for residential buildings. The ducts are considered whose cross-sectional shapes resemble triangle and longitudinal centerline a cosine wave. It is shown that, as the cross-sectional shape departs from triangle, the heat transfer performance of the duct tends to deteriorate. Also, applying the wave-like shape to the longitudinal centerline of the duct increases the rate of heat transfer and the applied pressure-gradient at the same time. The origin of the performance variations in the cases considered are quantitatively analyzed and discussed.
