A LMS algorithms has been widely used for an adaptive filter algorithm in active noise control systems. But this algorithm has poor convergence and it is very difficult to select optimal convergence parameters in this algorithm. In this paper, a fuzzy LMS algorithm where the convergence parameters are computed using a fuzzy logic controller was proposed. A proposed algorithm was applied to active noise control system in HVAC(central Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) ducts. The experimental ducts and experimental apparatus were designed and manufactured for experiments, and the modelling of the experimental ducts was also performed for computer simulations. Computer simulations and experiments were performed to show the effectiveness of a proposed algorithm.
To ensure the safety and functionality of a railroad bridge, maintaining the integrity of the bridge via continuous structural health monitoring is important. However, most structural integrity monitoring methods proposed to date are based on modal responses which require the extracting process and have limited availability. In this paper, the applicability of the existing damage identification method based on free-vibration reponses to time-domain deflection shapes due to moving train load is investigated. Since the proposed method directly utilizes the time-domain responses of the structure due to the moving vehicles, the extracting process for modal responses can be avoided, and the applicability of structural health evaluation can be enhanced. The feasibility of the presented method is verified via a numerical example of a simple plate girder bridge.

Double facade systems are often paid attention of as an effective energy saving measure for curtain wall buildings. However, it is not easy to install the system in existing buildings and requires substantial investment. An innovative double window system is proposed in this study which can be installed with exiting window systems in a cost effective way. the proposed system is connected to existing return ducts to make airflow between the existing window and the newly installed window. To ensure the best performance of the proposed system, simulation-based analysis was implemented in which airflow characteristics of inside double window were examined according to air pressures of return duct and window material by using computer simulation ESP-r. the overview of the proposed system and the results of the simulation-based analysis are presented in this paper.

This study has been conducted to provide the basic datum to draw mechanical equipments needed for aged apartment housing remodeling by questioning survey and interview for residents who has been lived in the aged apartment housing. To preferences survey, we prepare four forms of sheets - questioning survey and interview for residents, interview for managers, and visiting interview for residents. The questioning survey results shows that some residents feel discomfort for water hammer and water supply noise and for noise and stink transmission from air duct installed ceiling to ventilate bathroom. The interview results for residents and managers shows typically two major problems. The first is insulation and heating problems when balcony extended in each household. The second is piping and shaft layouts problem for maintenance and remodeling flexibility. It is important to study indepth each problems because these problems will increase more in the future.

Baffles enhance heat transfer by disturbing boundary layer and bulk flow, creating impingement, and increasing heat transfer surface area. This study was performed to determine how the two inclined baffles (${\alpha}=5^{\circ}$ perforated models) placed at a rectangular channel affect heat transfer and associated friction characteristics. The parametric effects of perforated baffles (3, 6 and 12 holes) and flow Reynolds number ranging from 28,900 to 61,800 on the heated target surface are explored. Comparisons of the experimental data with the numerical results by commercial code CFX 10.0 are presented. As for the investigation of heat transfer behaviors on local Nusselt number with two baffles placed at $x/D_h=0.8$ and $x/D_h=8.0$ of the edge of baffles, it is evident that the inclined perforated baffles augment overall heat transfer significantly by both jet impingement and boundary layer separation. There exists an optimum perforation density to maximize heat transfer coefficients; i.e., the average Nusselt number increases with increasing number of holes, but the friction factor decreases with an increase in the hole number placed at baffles.

The recent on indoor air problem has led to many studies on the methods and effects of ventilation for better indoor air quality. Although natural ventilation is the most effective and energy-saving method in residental housings, the small size of openable window has been a problem in high-rise residential buildings to ventilate only through natural ventilation. Consequently, the installation of mechanical ventilation system has been a requirement in residential buildings, and has caused other problems such as increase of energy consumption and SBS. Hybrid ventilation which uses forces of both natural and mechanical power has been introduced to solve the problem of increase in energy consumption with natural ventilation. In this paper, two types of hybrid ventilation systems in residential building were introduced. One type was with natural ventilation through vent grille in the window, and another type was with natural ventilation through ceiling duct while both types used mechanical ventilation system with the outlets. The indoor temperature distribution and pollution density distribution in summer while operating the ceiling air conditioner were analyzed through CFD simulation. In this paper, the optimal location of diffusers to achieve thermal comfort would be proposed.
The vortex ventilation system (VV) which uses a rotating finned swirler installed coaxially with the exhaust duct is a very effective local ventilator. VV can enhance the capture depth by a factor of 3-5 compared to the conventional exhaust hood, in the absence of any solid walls nearby. In real situations there may exist ceiling, side wall and floor, all of which can affect the flow field and suction performance by way of the no-slip condition on the walls. 3D CFD simulation was performed in order to see the effect of the floor on the capture performance of the VV. The presence of floor reduced suction flow velocity, and increased the critical rotational speed which is the rotational speed required for stable vortex formation. Flow velocity profile along the axis could be well approximated by a universal functional form when the distance from the exhaust inlet is non-dimensionalized by the distance to the floor. Capture depth, define by the distance from the exhaust inlet to a point of velocity decreased to 10% of that at the inlet, is reduced by about 10% when the floor distance is 6 times the exhaust hood diameter.

Noise prediction for HVAC(Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning) systems are normally performed by empirical method suggested by NEBB(National Environmental Balancing Bureau, 1994). However, the method is not suitable for large ducts in ships. In this paper, computational analysis methods are used to develop a noise prediction method for the large ducts in ships. To develop regression formula of attenuation of sound pressure level in large ducts, Boundary Element Method(BEM) is used. BEM and Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) are applied to the analysis of flow-induced noise in ducts with stiffeners inside. Loud noise above 100 dB can be generated in some cases. Breakout noises of large ducts are also analyzed by using BEM and Finite Element Method(FEM). The acoustic pressure level shows about 10-15dB difference between inside and outside of the duct. Utilizing the results of this study, it is expected that shipyard planners can predict noise of the HVAC system for ships.
This study was performed to analyze the distribution of air current speed, $CO_2$ concentration, and photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) in a closed transplants production system (CTPS) for producing quality transplants. And the effect of PPF on the growth of potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Dejima) plug seedlings was analyzed. Uniformity of the air current speed in CTPS was improved by installing perforated floors in duct for air circulating and by adjusting of air flow rate of the fan connected to air conditioning unit used in this study, Measured $CO_2$ concentrations were measured $409{\pm}13$, $950{\pm}25$, and $1,550{\pm}35\;{\mu}mol{\cdot}mol^{-1}$ for setting values of 400, 950, and $1,550\;{\mu}mol{\cdot}mol^{-1}$, respectively. Uniformity of PPF by adding each one the single fluorescent lamp of 20 W at both ends of the single fluorescent lamps of 40 W was highly improved. While the average PPF measured under the twin fluorescent lamps of 55 W installed at regular intervals of 10 cm was decreased by increasing the vertical distance from the lighting sources, the ratio of average PPF measured at both ends to PPF measured in the center was 74-79%. Five levels ($100{\pm}9$, $150{\pm}14$, $200{\pm}17$, $250{\pm}24$ and $300{\pm}31{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$) of PPF were provided to investigate the effect of PPF on plant height, fresh weight and dry weight of potato plug seedlings produced in CTPS. Plant height was decreased by increasing PPF. Maximum fresh weight and dry weight were shown under PPF of $250{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$. Thus PPF of $250\;{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ was enough to produce quality potato transplants under air temperature, photoperiod, and relative humidity of $20^{\circ}C$, 16/8 h, and 70%, respectively. It was concluded that quality indices such as plant height, fresh weight and dry weight could be improved by illuminating of adequate PPF from artificial lighting sources.
