  • This study aimed to estimate the damage to major crops, such as rice, wheat, and pears, caused by Typhoon Khanun as it passed through the Korean Peninsula in August 2023. I t also sought to predict the damage using a numerical model and to qualitatively evaluate it based on the collected damage database. The LAMP-WRF numerical model, which utilizes the results of the UM numerical model from the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) as initial and boundary data, predicted the typhoon and its path. I t also estimated wind damage by applying crop damage criteria based on wind speed. The predictions were compared and evaluated against KMA AWS observation data and crop disaster insurance claim data. As a result of the study, the predicted path of Typhoon Khanun generated by the LAMP-WRF model showed an error of approximately 48 km and 3 hours compared to the actual path and time. I t was observed that the numerical model tends to overpredict wind damage to rice, wheat, and pears due to the negative deviation in the typhoon's central pressure and the positive deviation in surface wind. The findings indicated that the predictions could be improved by correcting these deviations in wind speed. It also suggests research topics that should be pursued in the future following this paper. This study is expected to provide foundational data that can support decision-making for local governments and farmers in preparing for and responding to typhoon disasters by predicting crop damage from typhoons, which are increasing due to climate change. As typhoons, a representative natural disaster in the era of the climate crisis, occur with increasing power and frequency in Korea, the damage to the agricultural sector is continuously rising. The results of this study will contribute to the development of impact forecasting technology for climate change responses and the practical implementation of the early warning system being established by the Rural Development Administration.

  • Cage experiments by artificial infestations with different initial densities of Frankliniella occidentalis were conducted to analyze damages and develop control thresholds of F. occidentalis on greenhouse eggplant in 2005 and on greenhouse sweet pepper in 2007. In the eggplant experiment, the infestations of F. occidentalis resulted in direct damage on fruit surface and non-marketable fruits which had several thin or thick lines or bleaching patches on the surface. F. occidentalis adults were frequently found on the flowers of eggplants, while nymphs were mainly observed on leaves. The fruit yield of eggplants was not significantly different among experimental plots with different initial density of F. occidentalis. Relationship between % non-marketable fruits among harvested fruits of eggplant and sticky trap catches of F. occidentalis (no. thrips/trap/week) at two weeks before the harvest showed a positive correlation. Using the estimated relationship, the control threshold of F. occidentalis on greenhouse eggplant was estimated at 10 adults per week at two weeks before the harvest when 5% of non-marketable fruit was applied for the gain threshold. In the experiment of sweet pepper, the direct damage by F. occidentalis was observed on the fruit surface and calyx, and the marketable grade of the damaged fruits decreased. The significant yield loss of marketable fruits was found in plots with high initial introduced-densities. There was a high relationship between thrips density and percentage of damaged fruits. Assuming 5% yield loss (non-marketable fruit) for the gain threshold, the control threshold of F. occidentalis on greenhouse sweet pepper was 4.8 adults per trap and 0.9 individuals per flower at two weeks before harvest.

  • This study was conducted to determine Seasonal Occurrence, soybean damage and control efficacy of bean bug, Riptortus clavatus Thunberg at soybean field in Honam province. Occurrence of R. clavatus varied at seeding times with annual difference. The peak occurrence of R. clavatus was appeared at late of August for late May seeding and middle of September for middle June seeding. There was difference in the peak occurrence of R. clavatus due to different growing stages affected by different weather conditions though soybean was seeded at same time. If the rate of soybean seed damage area by R. clavatus sucking increases, the germinating rate was greatly decreased. If the rate of soybean seed damage area is above 50 percent, in particular, the germinating rate was very low with 2 percent. Control efficacy against R. clavatus was the highest with $91\%$ at 3 times treatment of insecticide at $R_4$ (full pod stage) + $R_5$ (Beginning seed stage) +$R_6$ (full seed stage) of soybean growing stages in field.

  • This study was carried out to determine the economic injury level of the rice leaffolder,Cnaphalocrocis medinalis G.. The damage aspects of rice plant (at tilling stage) by leaf folders at different larval density per plant were studied in pot experiment (24 cm in diameter, 18 cm in height). One leaf folder consumed 6-7 leaves during larval stage. The damage by leaf folders was simulated by cutting off 0, 10, 30, 50, 70, and 90% of leaves before and after heading stage July 15th (at panicle initiation stage) and August 15th (at milk stage), respectively. When leaves were cut before the heading of rice, the linear relationships between the leaf cutting rate (X) and each factors of yield (Y) were as following; for grain maturity it was Y = -9.379X + 83.630 ($R^{2}=0.493$),\;Y = 0.139X + 0.490 ($R^{2}=0.925$) for yield, and Y = -4.880X + 81.116 ($R^{2}=0.665$) for head rice. When leaves were cut after the heading of rice, it was Y = -23.0l4X + 83.589 ($R{2}=0.915$), for grain maturity, Y=0.141X + 3.466 ($R^{2}=0.842$) for yield, and Y = -13.795X + 81.964 ($R^{2}=0.898$) for head rice. We found that when leaf cutting after the heading stage caused more damage than before the heading in terms of yield and yield components. Based on theses results the economic threshold level was estimated to be 30% and 7% leaf loss before and after heading stage.

  • Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) poses a significant global health burden, often requiring liver transplantation and resulting in fatalities. Current treatments, like corticosteroids, effectively reduce inflammation but carry significant immunosuppressive risks. This study evaluates Lactiplantibacillus plantarum FB091, a newly isolated probiotic strain, as a safer alternative for ALD treatment. Using an in vivo mouse model, we assessed the effects of L. plantarum FB091 on alcohol-induced liver damage and gut microbiota composition. Alcohol and probiotics administration did not significantly impact water/feed intake or body weight. Histopathological analysis showed that L. plantarum FB091 reduced hepatocellular ballooning and inflammatory cell infiltration in liver tissues and mitigated structural damage in colon tissues, demonstrating protective effects against alcohol-induced damage. Biomarker analysis indicated that L. plantarum FB091 decreased aspartate aminotransferase levels, suggesting reduced liver damage, and increased alcohol dehydrogenase activity, indicating enhanced alcohol metabolism. Additionally, cytokine assays revealed a reduction in pro-inflammatory TNF-α and an increase in anti-inflammatory IL-10 levels in colon tissues of the L. plantarum FB091 group, suggesting an anti- inflammatory effect. Gut microbiota analysis showed changes in the L. plantarum FB091 group, including a reduction in Cyanobacteria and an increase in beneficial bacteria such as Akkermansia and Lactobacillus. These changes correlated with the recovery and protection of liver and colon health. Overall, L. plantarum FB091 shows potential as a therapeutic probiotic for managing ALD through its protective effects on liver and colon tissues, enhancement of alcohol metabolism, and beneficial modulation of gut microbiota. Further clinical studies are warranted to confirm these findings in humans.

  • We investigated the first symptom emerging date of rice bacterial leaf blight disease during four years from 2002 to 2005. The disease occurrence date was earlier 20$\sim$30 days in 2005 than that of 2002. The damage in different rice growth stage by the bacterial disease on rice yield and grain quality in southern part of Korea was examined. The disease decreased rice yield following by increased infection rates. Slight loss in rice yield and brown head rice rate were observed at below 10% level of infected leaf area, while over 25% infected leaf area caused the significant decrease in rice yield and brown head rice rate. More than 50% of the infected leaf area rate caused 29% yield reduction in case of infection at panicle formation stage and 18% of brown head rice rate. Cooked rice quality was also affected in the diseased rice by damage in palatability score and viscosity.

  • Recently, the damage caused by climate change has been distinguished in the world. The Korean Peninsula is also suffering from drought, so it is necessary to study the vulnerability assessment to identify and predict the state of the irrigation facility, which is a irrigation facility. As the damage caused by drought is occurring in the Korean peninsula, it is necessary to study the vulnerability assessment to know the condition of the irrigation facility, and to predict it. The target areas were Yeongdong-gun, Cheonan-si, Mungyeong-si, Geochang-gun, Muju-gun, and Yeonggwang-gun. The survey items were selected as positive impacts survey items, including precipitation, groundwater level, and pumping capacity per groundwater well. The negative impacts were selected as the cultivation acreage, Number of days without rain, and the ratio of private underground wells. The survey method was investigated by various methods such as "weather data portal", "groundwater level status information", "agricultural drought management system", "groundwater survey yearbook". The results of vulnerability assessment were expressed by the score by conducting survey and standardization. As a result, Yeonggwang-gun showed normal vulnerability, and other areas showed "vulnerable" or "very vulnerable".
