Status of Membrane Filtration in Japan : Application for Water Supply

  • In Japan, the membrane filtration is becoming a common technology for municipal water supply system especially for small plant. 6 years before (1991), the national research project of membrane filtration for small plant has started. The project was named as "MAC 21", MEMBRANE AQUA CENTURY 21. In the project the Ministry of Health and Welfare, 8 universities and 18 water treatment plant companies have been involved. This was the first attempt to research a common theme in joint with government, universities and private companies. After three years, the guide line for membrane filtration application for small plant has been established. This has promoted to install some actual plant. And also, another joint research for "RESEARCH OF MEMBRANE FILTRATION FOR ADVANCED WATER TREATMENT" has started in 1994 and completed in March, 1997. The project was named as MAC21. In the former project the main objectives were removal of turbidity and bacteria from water. However, in new project the objective was establishment of the further advanced membrane filtration technology which would be applicable for trace chemical components removal such as tri-halo-methane pre-courser, agricultural chemicals removal, offensive smell and taste removal and virus removal. For the objectives, application of nanofiltration and hybrid-system, a combination of micro-filtration ultra-filtration with biological, ozone and activated carbon treatment process have been studied. In addition, application of membrane filtration for treatment of back-wash waste water originated from membrane filters and conventional sand filters has.been studied. At the end of March of this year, about 30 membrane filtration plants are actually supplying the water, the total treatment capacity is about 6,000 m$^{3}$/day and another 20 will be installed within one year.led within one year.

석회석과 제강슬래그를 이용하여 안정화한 담수된 논토양의 비소 및 중금속의 거동변화 (The Fate of As and Heavy Metals in the Flooded Paddy Soil Stabilized by Limestone and Steelmaking Slag)

  • The characteristics of As and heavy metals depend on the oxidation/reduction condition of the soil environment. The most heavy metals are immobilized by the reduction condition whereas As, Fe and Mn become more soluble. Therefore this study estimated the stabilization efficiency of the agricultural paddy soil in the vicinity of the abandoned mine using a flooded column test including analysis of the soil solution, contaminants fractionation and rice grain. Limestone and steelmaking slag were used as amendments for stabilization of the contaminated soil. In an analysis of the soil solution, the mobile characteristics of Fe and Mn, which were used as electron acceptors of the microorganisms, were controlled by increasing the pH by adding alkali amendments. This means that the contaminants combined with Fe and Mn can be stable under flooded reduction condition. However, the concentrations of cationic heavy metals (Cd, Pb, and Zn) were also decreased without amendments because the carbonates produced from microbial respiration increased the pH of the soil solution. In the amended soil, the specific sorbed fraction of As and carbonates fraction of heavy metals were increased when compared to the control soil at the end of the column test. Especially in heavy metals, the increase of carbonates fraction seems to be influenced by alkali amendments rather than microbial respiration. Because of the stabilization effect in the flooded paddy soil, the contents of As and Zn in rice grain from amended soil were lower than that of the control soil. But additional research is needed because of the relatively higher Pb content identified in the rice grain from the amended.

여러 안정화제가 산성 및 알칼리 토양에서 중금속 안정화에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Various Amendments on Heavy Metal Stabilization in Acid and Alkali Soils)

  • BACKGROUND: Recent studies using many amendments for heavy metal stabilization in soil were conducted in order to find out new materials. But, the studies accounting for the use of appropriate amendments considering soil pH remain incomplete. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of initial soil pH on the efficiency of various amendments. METHODS AND RESULTS: Acid soil and alkali soil contaminated with heavy metals were collected from the agricultural soils affected by the abandoned mine sites nearby. Three different types of amendments were selected with hypothesis being different in stabilization mechanisms; organic matter, lime stone and iron, and added with different combination. For determining the changes in the extractable heavy metals, water soluble, Mehlich-3, Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure, Simple Bioavailability Extraction Test method were applied as chemical assessments for metal stabilization. For biological assessments, soil respiration and root elongation of bok choy (Brassica campestris ssp. Chinensis Jusl.) were determined. CONCLUSION: It was revealed that lime stone reduced heavy metal mobility in acid soil by increasing soil pH and iron was good at stabilizing heavy metals by supplying adsorption sites in alkali soil. Organic matter was a good source in terms of supplying nutrients, but it was concerning when accounting for increasing metal availability.

제주도의 지질구조선과 함덕-표선 지구대 (Geological Structural Lines and Hamdeok-Pyoseon Graben in Jeju Island)

  • 지구조 운동에 의한 지질구조선의 생성과정을 추정한 결과 화강암체 융기 후 2회, 미고결퇴 적층 퇴적 후 2회 등 모두 4회의 침강작용으로 대규모 지질구조선이 생성되었으며 침강작용은 동북동-서 남서 방향의 인장응력 과 북북서-남남동 방향의 압축응력에 의해 일어났다. 함덕과 신흥지역의 응회암 및 미고결퇴 적층이 인접한 동서지역보다 $70\~140m$ 정도 더 깊이 분포하고 화강암도 $50\~500m$ 정도 더 깊이 분포하는 것은 함덕지역에서부터 신흥리를 포함한 표선지역까지 3회의 차별 침강작용에 의해 함덕-표선 지구대가 형성되었기 때문으로 해석된다.

수분함량에 따른 반건조 우리밀 국수의 품질 특성 (Quality Characteristics of Semi-dry Noodles with different Water Contents)

  • This study evaluated the quality characteristics of semi-dried noodles prepared with different water contents (wet noodles; 32, 24, 22, 20%, dry noodles; 12%). The drying process was carried out in a drying chamber at $13{\sim}18^{\circ}C$ temperature and 75~95% humidity. The proximate composition of Korean wheat flour was as follows: water $22.1{\pm}3.64%$, protein $8.6{\pm}0.13%$, fat $1.3{\pm}0.10%$, ash $0.7{\pm}0.02%$, carbohydrates $67.3{\pm}0.10%$. As water contents decreased, both L and b values significantly decreased before cooking of noodles, whereas L, a, and b values were not significantly different after cooking of noodles. Weight, water absorption, and volume of cooked noodles significantly increased as water content decreased, whereas turbidity of soup was not significantly different. Cutting hardness before cooking of noodles significantly increased as water content decreased. Sections of noodles after cooking by SEM (scanning electron microscopy) showed roughness and fewer round starch particles as water content decreased. For overall preferences according to the sensory evaluation, noodles prepared with different water contents were not significantly different. According to the results, semidried noodles have development potential to complement the disadvantages of both wet noodles and dry noodles.

Variation of main components according to the number of steaming and drying of Rehmanniae radix preparata

  • Contents of compounds in Rehmanniae Radix change depending on the number of steaming and drying and the drying method. In this study, as an impregnation method for dried Rehmanniae Radix, takju impregnation and cheongju impregnation were carried out and steaming and drying were repeated for 9 times. The changes of 5-HMF and catalpol contents were analyzed according to the number of repetition times to investigate which stage of steaming and drying is preferable. Also, total nitrogen, crude fat, ash, and crude fiber were measured to analyze changes in general components. 5-HMF was not detected in dried Rehmanniae Radix. As a result of repetitive steaming and drying, the content of 5-HMF increased only slightly from 1 to 4-times steaming and drying but increased significantly from 5-times. The catalpol in dried Rehmanniae Radix was not detected after 5 times of steaming and drying. Sucrose, maltose, and glucose were included in dried Rehmanniae Radix before steaming and drying. However, after the process in both Takju impregnation and Cheongju impregnation, galactose and fructose tended to decrease after production and sucrose and glucose tended to decrease after the increase. In this study condition, 6-times and more steaming and drying were appropriate process which met the content criteria (not less than 0.1%) of the Korean Pharmacopoeia (8th edition) for 5-HMF, an index component for quality control of Rehmanniae Radix Preparata.

죽순분말을 첨가한 전병의 품질특성 (Quality properties of Jeonbyeong containing bamboo sprout powder)

  • 죽순분말을 첨가한 전병을 제조하여 첨가 수준별 품질특성을 조사하였다. 죽순분말 첨가 전병의 일반성분 중 조단백질, 식이섬유와 회분의 경우 죽순 분말 첨가량이 증가할수록 높아지는 경향을 보였고 조지방은 감소하였다. 유리아미노산 함량의 경우 죽순분말을 첨가할수록 증가하는 결과를 보였다. 색도에서 명도를 나타내는 L값은 죽순 분말 첨가량이 높아지면서 증가하였고, 무첨가구 시료와 타 시료간의 색차값을 비교한 ${\Delta}E$ 값의 변화는 죽순 분말 100 g 첨가구가 4.58로 나타나 죽순 분말 첨가가 전병 고유의 색에 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 유리당 함량은 죽순 분말을 첨가하면서 다소 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 관능에 따른 시료별 선호도 결과 죽순 300 g 첨가 시료가 색(color), 향미(flavor), 맛(taste), 식감(chewiness) 모두 가장 높은 값을 나타냈다. 전반적 기호도와 다양한 관능검사 결과를 종합하여 볼 때 전병에 첨가하는 죽순분말의 적정비율은 300 g 수준이 가장 좋은 것으로 나타났다.

GPR 탐사방법을 이용한 유류오염물질(LNAPL) 탐지 (LNAPL Detection with GPR)

  • 유기 석유화학 오염 물질인 휘발유가 지하 분포 시, 지하수면 위 토양 매질(vadose zone)내에 존재할 수 있는 기체 상태(vaporphase)와, 지하수면의 상승 또는 하강에 의해 분포 할 수 있는 residual phase의 유류 오염 물질이 GPR에 미치는 반응을 조사하기 위하여 모래와 자갈을 토양 매질로서 채운 탱크를 이용한 모델 실험이 수행되었다. 물만 사용하여 지하수면의 상승과 하강을 유도한 후, 석유 수송을 위하여 지하에 매장된 파이프 혹은 석유저장을 위한 지하 탱크로부터 지하수면으로의 유류 오염을 simulation하기 위하여 모델 탱크바닥을 통하여 휘발유가 주입되었다. 본 연구 결과, 수분 함량에 따른 GPR의 민감성과 지하수면의 변화 관측에의 GPR 효율성이 입증되었다. 또한, 휘발성 유류 오염 물질의 기체상태가 vadose zone에 분포 시 GPR를 이용하여 탐지할 수 있는 가능성과, 지하수면의 상승에 의해 지하수면 밑의 물로 포화된 토양(water saturated zone)에 분포할 수 있는 residual phase의 유류 오염 물질의 탐지 가능성이 모델 실험을 통하여 확립되었다 그리고, residual phase의 유류 오염 물질이 지하수면 아래에 분포하는 오염지역에서 GPR을 이용한 유류 오염물질을 탐지할 수 있는 새로운 탐사전략이 제시되었다.

농촌성과 도시성의 인식론적 이해 (Epistemological Understandings of Urbanism and Rurality)

  • The discussion of this paper is concerned with the epistemology of urbanism and rurality, that is, the justification of certain knowledge claims about how to intervene in understanding of urban and rural way of life and their implications to space. It is not concerned with the search for "truth" as such, but rather with the construction and presentation of knowledge as truth that subsequently lead to interpretation in the form of scholarly arguments. Rural areas vary considerably, and we define it as of a socially constructed category and so does urban as a comparative construction. As with community, rurality has been defined in widely different ways so has urbanism. In identifying and interconnecting these two concepts, we incorporate diverse western epistemologies such as empiricism and pragmatism. In addition, we heed particular attention to the intellectual history of Silhak, a philosophical ideology of Korea, to identify the relationships and it's effect on social way of life encompassing the realm of rural and urban spaces. We found that Silhak is particularly useful in that it deals with substantive issues of the relationship between rurality and urbanism arising from the discordance between values and perceive conditions of the rural and urban way of lives. This paper argues that the epistemology of Silhak is particularly superior to those of western ideologies since it accentuates unity of spaces rather than differentiating urban and rural way of life. We concludes with demanding more studies in the field of urban and rural analyses incorporating more diverse concepts of Korean orthodox epistemology.

격자기반의 일 증발산량 추정모형 개발 (GRID-based Daily Evapotranspiration Prediction Model (GRIDET))

  • 본 논문에서는 Morton(1983)의 보완관계식을 이용하여 증발산량의 시.공간적 분포 양상을 계산할 수 있는 격자기반의 일 증발산량 추정 모형을 개발하였다. 본 모형은 C 언어로 개발되었으며, ASCII 형태의 수치표고자료와 토지피복도가 입력자료로 이용되어 유역에 대한 일 증발산량을 계산하게 된다. 또한, 증발산량에 대한 시간적 변화 양상과 공간적 분포 양상을 GRASS에서 나타낼 수 있도록 구성하였다. 모형의 적용성 검증을 위해서 대청댐 상류지역에 위치한 보청천의 일부 지역(76.5$\textrm{km}^2$)에 대해서 적용하였다. 적용결과, 보청천 유역의 이평교 지점에서 1995년도 증발산랑은 766.1mm로 나타났으며, 경사면과 면적에 대한 일사량 보정 후 약22%가 증가 하는 것으로 나타났다.
