  • This study was to design the optimal locations of the water level monitoring to quantify the agricultural water use in irrigation area supplied from an agricultural reservoir. In most of agricultural areas without TM/TC (Tele-Monitoring and Tele-Control) or monitoring network, irrigation water have been supplied on conventional experience and agricultural reservoir have been operated based on the operating simulation results by HOMWRS (Hydrological Operation Model for Water Resources System). Therefore, this study quantified the amount of agricultural water use in an irrigation area (Musu Reservoir, Jincheon-gun) by establishing water level monitoring network and analyzed the agricultural water saving effect. According to the evaluation of the economic values for water saving effect, the saving agricultural water of 1.7 million ton was analyzed to have economic values of 0.85 million won as water for living, and 1.78 million won as water for industrial use. It is identified to secure economic feasibility of the new water monitoring network by establishing one monitoring point in the entrance, irrigation area and endpoint through the economic analysis.

  • This study aims to analyze the effects of the Agricultural Ecological Environment Program, the first agri-environmental policy in Korea. To this end, as Janghyeon in Boryeong City and Hwaam in Cheongyang County were set up as experimental group. And similar to these villages nearby, Hwangryong in Boryeong and Gideok in Cheongyang have been set up as the control group. It compared and analyzed the farms' level and structure of awareness. The main results of the study can be summarized as follows. First, the Agricultural Ecological Environment Program improved the awareness of safe agricultural product cultivation and agricultural ecological environment stabilize. However, the contribution to the formation of rural community has not been statistically significant. Second, it was found that the farms clearly distinguish and recognize the safe agricultural products cultivation, the agricultural ecological environment stabilize, and the formation of rural community. On the other hand, it was found that the control group that did not participate in the agricultural ecological and environmental program was confused on the recognition of three things or did not recognize them. To summarized, the future agri-environmental policy can be grafted onto regional development policy. So, the areas of agri-environmental policy should include both agriculture and rural. In addition, the scientific discipline and movement approach should be all used also in the method of approach.

  • Heavy metal pollution in agricultural field has been a critical issue in worldwide. For this reason, remediation technologies for heavy metal polluted soil are applied especially near at the abandoned metal mine. Soil quality analysis is also an important factor for proper management in heavy metal polluted agricultural field. In this study, scoring function was utilized to evaluate soil quality in heavy metal polluted agricultural field. Among other soil properties, bulk density, soil pH, EC, $NH_4$-N, $NO_3$-N, and cation exchange capacity (CEC) were determined for minimum data set (MDS) with principal component analysis. Result showed that both upland and paddy soil contaminated with heavy metal were not suitable for crop growth except scoring of soil pH for paddy soil and CEC for upland soil. This result might indicate that chemical stabilization technology with chemical amendment could be adapted for remediation method for heavy metal polluted agiclutural field not only for heavy metal immobilization but also enhancement of soil condition for crop growth.

  • This study aimed to develop a parcel-unit soil loss estimation tool embedded in Excel worksheet, USLExls, required for the design of contaminated farmland restoration project and to analyze the impact of the project carried out soil-filling work on soil loss. USLE method was adopted for the estimation of average annual soil loss in a parcel unit, and each erosivity factor in the USLE equation was defined through the review of previous studies. USLExls was implemented to allow an engineer to try out different combinations just by selecting one among the popular formulas by each factor at a combo box and to simply update parameters by using look-up tables. This study applied it to the estimation of soil loss before and after soil-filling work at Dong-a project area. The average annual soil loss after the project increased by about 2.4 times than before on average, and about 60 % of 291 parcels shifted to worse classes under the classification criteria proposed by Kwak (2005). Although average farmland steepness was lower thanks to land grading work, the soil loss increased because the inappropriate texture of the cover soil induced the soil erosion factor K to increase from 0.33 before to 0.78 after the soil-filling work. The results showed that the selection of cover soil for soil-filling work should be carefully considered in terms soil loss control and the estimation of change in soil loss should be mandatory in planning a contaminated farmland restoration project.

  • Turfgrass, the most widely grown ornamental crop, is severely affected by fungal pathogens including Sclerotinia homoeocarpa, Rhizoctonia solani, and Magnaporthe poae. At present, turfgrass fungal disease management predominantly relies on synthetic fungicide treatments. However, the extensive application of fungicides to the soil increases residual detection frequency, raising concerns for the environment and human health. The bacterial volatile compound, 2,3-butanediol (BDO), was found to induce plant resistance. In this study, we evaluated the disease control efficacy of a combination of stereoisomers of 2,3-BDO and commercial fungicides against turfgrass fungal diseases in both growth room and fields. In the growth room experiment, the combination of 0.9% 2R,3R-BDO (levo) soluble liquid (SL) formulation and 9% 2R,3S-BDO (meso) SL with half concentration of fungicides significantly increased the disease control efficacy against dollar spot and summer patch disease when compared to the half concentration of fungicide alone. In field experiments, the disease control efficiency of levo 0.9% and meso 9% SL, in combination with a fungicide, was confirmed against dollar spot and large patch disease. Additionally, the induction of defense-related genes involved in the salicylic acid and jasmonic acid/ethylene signaling pathways and reactive oxygen species detoxification-related genes under Clarireedia sp. infection was confirmed with levo 0.9% and meso 9% SL treatment in creeping bentgrass. Our findings suggest that 2,3-BDO isomer formulations can be combined with chemical fungicides as a new integrated tool to control Clarireedia sp. infection in turfgrass, thereby reducing the use of chemical fungicides.

  • A variety of microorganisms in rhizosphere affect plant health by plant growth promotion, mitigation of abiotic stresses as well as protection from pathogen attacks. In our previous study, we selected a bacterium, Bacillus mesonae H20-5, for alleviation of salinity stress in tomato plants. In this study, we verified the effect of a liquid formulation of B. mesonae H20-5 (TP-H20-5) on fruit production and phytochemical accumulation including lycopene and polyphenol in cherry tomato and strawberry fruits in on-farm tests of protected cultivation under salinity stress. When vegetables including tomato, cherry tomato, strawberry, and cucumber were treated with TP-H20-5 by irrigated systems, final marketable yields were increased by 21.4% (cherry tomato), 9.3% (ripen tomato), 120.6% (strawberry), and 14.5% (cucumber) compared to untreated control. Moreover, treatment of TP-H20-5 was showed increase of phytochemicals such as lycopene and total polyphenol compared to untreated control in cherry tomato and strawberry. Therefore, these results indicated that a formulant of B. mesonae H20-5 can be used as a potential biofertilizer for increasing fruit production and quality.

  • Globally, abnormal climate phenomena have led to an increase in rainfall intensity, consequently causing a rise in flooding-related damages. Agricultural areas, in particular, experience significant annual losses every year due to a lack of research on flooding in these regions. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the flood event that occurred on July 16, 2017, in the agricultural area situated in Sindaedong, Heungdeok-gu, Cheongju-si. To achieve this, the EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) was employed to generate runoff data by rainfall information. The produced runoff data facilitated the identification of flood occurrence points, and the analysis results exhibited a strong correlation with inundation trace maps provided by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS). The detailed output of the SWMM model enabled the extraction of time-specific runoff information at each inundation point, allowing for a detailed understanding of the inundation status in the agricultural area over different time frames. This research underscores the significance of utilizing the SWMM model to simulate inundation in agricultural areas, thereby validating the efficacy of flood alerts and risk management plans. In particular, the integration of rainfall data and the SWMM model in flood prediction methodologies is expected to enhance the formulation of preventative measures and response strategies against flood damages in agricultural areas.
